Man, I remember about 4 or 5 years ago, me and my sister lifted a rock and saw some ants and we were like "Oh, cool. Ants." 30 minutes later we come back, lift the rock again, and I went batshit crazy because they had wings. Didn't know they grew wings to mate, thought they were 'super' ants.

Used to find many many queens all over my yard and I thought they were just some weird type of ant and mushed them cause they were squishy and had squishy butts. Now that I’m grown and realise they literally were all queens....... I could’ve been rich... there were like Atleast 50 of them each day, I thought it was a colony....

I know this comment is ancient but when i was about 12 at my old apartment complex there was an old tree in the front of the yard with a huge hole by the trunk, and there was a wood fence it wasnt big it was just holding the lawn in place because the lawn was higher than the side walk and it was a "highway" for black carpenter ants that were living in the tree, i used to catch bugs and put them by the nest entrance and watch the workers attack and bring them back to nest, one day i went into my yard and it was full of flying ants (at the time i didn't even know they were ants let alone undergoing their nupital flight) but it was amazing to see 100s of ants flying around on a warm summer evening, that was the one and only time ive witnessed a nuptial flight, now 16 years later i still i live in the same town i saw the nupital flight in but a different apartment complex, been interested in raising camponotus pennsylvanicus for a few years now but have had no luck whatsoever finding a queen, it truly seems like a fun and rewarding hobby if i could just get started..

Around 5 or 6 years ago i found my first while sweeping at the end of a retail shift, caught it in a water bottle and transferred to a test tube, the colony reached i think 8-10 workers before winter but the Queen died during the hibernation period. Now I work in new construction and just happened to spot a winged ant crawling around inside the house we were working, once again caught it in a water bottle and transferred later, looks like its a harvester ant and hopefully it goes better this time.

So I finally found a winged queen today. I've got her in my make-shift test tube set up. She's already started shedding her wings. But I'm new to ant keeping and I'm not really sure about a few things, so I have a few questions: 1. If a winged queen sheds her wings is that usually a good indication that she has been impregnated? 2. Is there any good resources I can use to identify what type of ant she is? 3. Do you have to directly keep the nesting chamber moist or can you have a water source in the terrarium (like a damp sponger or shallow bowl?)
@JordanDeanFilms8 жыл бұрын
If a queen has shed its wings, that's usually a good sign she's fertile. You can never be certain though. Just do a search for native ants within your region and see if anything looks similar. The queen's chamber needs to be kept moist. Most queens won't leave their egg laying chambers, so a water source out of her direct reach is useless.

Someone here knows the nuptial flight schedules for the Camponotus spp. and the Solenopsis spp of South America?(More concretely, Buenos Aires, Argentina). If you know, please answer me! Thank you... Ant Love forever

I have 2 different ants atm, one is very excited each time I look at it (just took it yesterday) and the other one seems like one drugs/she's hyper calm even when I touched her to move her into her tube, could I show you them to see if I did everything alright so far? Thanks

Hi Jordan, thanx for your interesting YT. Ironically myself and my son live in Melbourne and we have decided on an ant farm project and have begun to look for Queens. We have seen lots of activity at the moment(see my comment date stamp) with colonies but we are yet to find a queen. We disturbed a nest and the ants went berserk but obviously the queen is deep and we aren't about to use earthmoving machines to dig one up. Any suggestions? Do we go from our suburbia to farmland and potter around dirt areas? Should we just buy one? (expensive!). You advice is welcome.

I live in Arizona and was wondering what species I could find around here to start a colony. Thanks!

Try google searching for ants in your area. This might even give you information on how to keep them well-maintained.

Thanks Mike. Just keep looking, you'll find one eventually.

You know when ants have their flights around here. My family decided to go out on the day they had their flights. The air was thick with them, and they are happy to land on you and cover you.

Cool im looking for a stinging species, anymore tips? Im hoping for a type of jack jumper any ideas what times they might fly in sa?
@JordanDeanFilms8 жыл бұрын
I don't have a whole lot of experience with Myrmecia. Here in Melbourne, I've seen queens flying around March and April, but I hear they fly in hot summer months too. Be on the lookout for Rhytidoponera. They usually fly in spring and are also a stinging species. Great to keep too, as they are unable to climb smooth objects like glass.
