I'll cut Siskel some slack for not liking the movie after only one watch. This movie didn't really clicked with me until after the third watch. Hudsucker Proxy was a good movie too.

Amazing when critics don't get what they are looking at - but that was true of Siskel most of the time. I put up with him only because of Ebert.

lol Jerry father in law in Fargo was wealthy. And it was the whole point of his kidnap for ransom he set up on his wife. Yet both those things didnt work in The Big Lebowski like they did in Fargo? What an awful take by Siskel.

So I guess this was before the QB would kneel to run the clock out? I’m a Giants fan and the Eagles always seem to find a miraculous way to best the Giants when the Giants have the lead and that’s why I hate the Eagles, I hate the cowgirls too lol😅

My friends and I, big Coen Bros fans went to see this on opening night in our college town. The theater had a reasonable number of people in it but after about 20 minutes into the film when we started picking up on the tone and flow of the story, we started laughing more and by the middle were just cracking up. We had people actually “shush” us and we just stared at them thinking… do you not get this? It’s a comedy, man! I really think the row in front of us had no idea what they were watching and may have genuinely thought we were mocking the film? Finally some other people were laughing a bit later and the crowd loosened up a bit. At the end though, my buddies were all cheering and commenting it was the best film and when the light came up we got stares of disbelief from the people in front. It was the first time I had ever been at a movie where it seemed like we were one of the few folks who actually “got it”

I knew as soon as this review started that Siskel would not care for his dudeness. It’s very much not the kind of movie he enjoys. He misses the point entirely. If you don’t enjoy the Jesus, you aren’t going to get the bowling scenes at all.

Dudeism is roughly loosely based around Taoism. What ever is going to happen, happens. We can fight it or accept it. We will have no peace of mind until we accept the fact we are not in control. "Don't wait for it to happen, don't even want it to happen. Just be ready when it does happen." It's a movie and not a deep dive into philosophy and religion. At its heart it's theatre of the absurd. The world goes by and whether I am planning, scheming, or just sit back and watch the world go by, we are born. We live. We die. It's funny in that guys trying to nothing end up in a absurd misadventure. Cohen Bros movies are art. Some get it. Some don't. Some will later. That's cool. The thing wth movie critics is that they see so many movies and know technical details it's hard to turn off the analysis of lighting, effects, wardrobes. Suspension of disbelief. The Dude wouldn't care about what others thought about him or his life.

The Big Lebowski is a good movie but not a great movie. I just don't understand all the love for it. Some people say it's their favourite movie. If you want to see a much better offbeat comedy based in LA with loads of odball characters I suggest the far superior Repo Man.

I get what Gene is saying; it was silly more than gut busting funny. Some movies, the comedy just hits right. This movie was trying to be funny but without any real comedic substance. It was silly & goofy more than hilarious.

This has to be one of Ebert's biggest "misses." He's my favorite critic of all time, but I disagree with just about every point he makes about Gladiator. I do wonder how he felt after it went on to win Best Picture. lol

I can't tell how I hate Bull Durham. For a just one single reason: if the role of Susan Sarandon would be male and Costner and Robbins' would be female...would be the movie funny for everybody as well? No, right?

“Chris Farley is not funny. I’ve never seen him be funny.” Between various cameos in multiple films by the time of this taping and 5 years on SNL, Gene has no excuse to say something so preposterously wrong. I’ve disagreed with things he’s said regarding movies many times (I also think he’s overall a pretty good critic) but I’ve never heard him say something so embarrassingly wrong.

Siskel didn't have a sense of humour. The film is over the top hilarious and it always has been. People have come around to it since it first landed on the planet but it was hilarious to begin with. It's very broad comedy and over the top but also extremely funny.
