I was curious as to why you don't use a seam gauge for measuring seam alterations rather than a tape measurer? Additionally, when I'm sewing soft tulle or chiffon I cut strips of tissue paper and pin it under and on top of the seam line I'm going to stitch. It helps to prevent the fabric from catching on the feeders and it gives the fabric some stability while sewing.

That’s awesome! Glad I could show you a way to do it when there is too much beadwork. Or the appliqués are hard to remove. Yes, in the good old days LOL, all my bodice alterations had me removing the appliqués and beads. But that is also when the base structure of the gown was made out of bridal satin. I tried doing the same to these new tulle bodice gowns. Sometimes it works ok to “peel back” the appliqués and do the alterations. And I do peel back the appliqués for many alterations, such as the shoulder seams. However, many times the appliqués are so stuck to the tulle that removing makes more of a mess. Thank you so much for watching! God bless and happy sewing! -Christa

You do beautiful work. Just found out my daughter is getting married this spring and we are going dress shopping this week. How long do big hem jobs like this take (she is short so odds are the dress will have to be hemmed at least 6 inches) and what are the usual costs? I can't find real info on this anywhere and wanted my daughter to know before choosing a dress. Thanks much.
@christasdressshoppe

Thank you so much! Congratulations on your daughter’s new engagement! 🎉 🥂 ♥️ Time depends on how many layers, how many appliqués and/beadwork needs to be removed and then replace in the new location. And it could take a different amount of time depending on the seamstress. I think I worked on this one off and on for a week. It was a much harder one than most. It had all the challenges possible. lol Cost will depend on all those things as well, and also depend on your location and the cost of living in your location. I’ve seen hems like this range all the way $250 to $500 and maybe more in big cities. But whatever they charge, just know a lot of work went into it and it’s worth every penny when she walks down that aisle. 🤗😊

Thanks for this video! I know nothing about sewing 😅 so this was really interesting and informative😊! So I have a question: What do you do if you don’t have access to matching fabric? (My situation: I’m 34-27-37, top to bottom, and A dress that I’m wanting to possibly buy resale, the D294-Jasmine from Allure Bridal’s “Disney Fairytale” collection, is too short because it’s been altered for a 5’4” bride and I’m 5’9” and will be pushing 6’0” after heels.😵‍💫 … we are the same size width-wise though. My other option is the same dress but this one’s 2 sizes smaller in width (a size 0, for a 23ish inch waste, I believe) but no alterations were done to it at all , which will give me the length I need.. it’s also $500 more than the shorter one… Which would you suggest I go with? 🤔 Here’s the dress : kleinfeldagain.com/products/d294jasmine?variant=48650068558122 it doesn’t look to me like it can be taken out in the waist at all, as it doesn’t look to have any seams along the hip area🤔

What if your tulle dress has a slit and you want to sew it up?
@christasdressshoppe
@christasdressshoppe 18 күн бұрын
You can sew each layer closed. A gown that has a slit from the factory should have a seam at the top of the slit. Close up the seam all the way down to the hem or if the bride wants a smaller slit, close it to the length she wants. If for some reason there is no seam above the slit, you will have to create a seam in that location on each layer. I hope that helps. 😊

I use to do bead work / necklaces/ earrings and also beaded my daughter’s wedding dress. I like the individual containers with lids best. When beading I will use a micro fiber cloth to put the beads on prevents them from rolling around makes it easier to quickly pick up a bead. To sort I will dump my mixed beads on the micro cloth then using a long thin beading needle I can quickly pick up same type of beads and then put them in containers. I also have a long thin tweezer for larger beads which has a scoop on the end which makes picking up a bunch of beads easy.

@@PeggyIshmael-p8m thank you so much Peggy! 🤗 I don’t usually see tulle French seamed. Usually they French seam fabrics like chiffon, organza and other fabrics that fray easy. However, if you have one of those new soft float tulles, I can see it being French seamed just fine. It might keep the raw edges from catching on the other fabrics. And by the way, congratulations on your granddaughters wedding! What an amazing time of life you are in. And to have the honor of making her wedding dress is priceless. If I’m hand sewing appliqués it’s just white or ivory regular cotton (possible poly blend) thread. If I’m sewing a nude lining i match the thread to the nude. Sewing on appliqués by machine, I use an invisible (I think it’s nylon) thread on top of the appliqués and a white or ivory cotton under the appliqués.

I just had the thought on Saturday, when learning of my future daughter-in-law's date for alterations on her gown, "why didn't I ever learn alterations?!" My mom sewed every stitch I wore growing up, and for many others in our community, but she HATED alterations. So I think I have an innate aversion to them. Now that I'm retired myself, this looks very interesting. I look forward to more videos!

Hello 😊 I too hated alterations. At the beginning I thought I would much rather sew something from scratch than alter it. But then as I did more and more I realized how much each alteration was teaching me about the construction of garments. I would get inside and investigate how it was constructed. Now I pretty much only do alterations. However, I am longing to do some projects completely from scratch. I hope to get time to do that this winter. 🙏🏻 Congratulations on your son and daughter-in-law’s upcoming wedding!! Thank you so much for joining our journey!!! -Christa

Now days I don’t have to advertise because I had a bridal shop for 16 years and it created a word of mouth snowball. lol But the best way is to talk to your local bridal shops, give them your cards. Put your cards at the local fabric store, sewing center etc. Also crest social media pages for your business and watch for people asking on different platforms for sewing projects. Etc. soon you will have way more business than you want. 😃

On the bagged hem on the prom dress, you mentioned that you were making sure that one was little longer and the other was a little shorter. Are you adjusting the 2 fabrics to create this, or, does the fabric naturally fall this way. I am getting ready to shorten a bridesmaid dress with a bagged hem.
@christasdressshoppe
@christasdressshoppe Ай бұрын
If you are keeping the original hem in tact and turning inside out, it should keep the same shorter lining as original. But if you cut it you will need to adjust it so that the outer layer is longer and has room to roll up. And the lining is a little shorter.

Oh dear! You did get the worst of the worst for one of your first jobs in bridal. If you have a background in sewing you should be fine. But it will probably take you much longer than expected. Prepare for that. But on the bright side, you will be learning some amazing skills that you will carry into your career in bridal. And the next gown will probably be easier. Sometimes we learn the best when we are thrown into the deep end. I have learned most of my skills this way. I had to learn because there was no other way. I try to analyze how the factory put it together and then try to copy that to return the dress to the original design. I’ll be praying for you today Cynthia. Many of my skills came that way too. When things seem bigger than my skills I look to the original Creator to give me wisdom. I’m excited to hear how it goes! Please keep me updated. -Christa

I am hemming a bridesmaid dress with a bagged hem. What do I to create the "lip" on the fashion (outter) fabric so that the lining is a little shorter ?
@christasdressshoppe
@christasdressshoppe Ай бұрын
Hello Cynthia, Thank you for this important question. If you keep the original seam in tact, and turn inside out to sew, it should maintain its shorter lining. You do have to think ahead and sew it a little longer to take into consideration the top layer rolling up into the lining. So watch for that so your hem isn’t too short. If you cut it before hand, you can sew it shorter by pulling the lining slightly longer on the cut edge. (Boy, that’s really hard to type out- I hope it makes sense)
@cynthiamitchell9727

Christa, thank you for your prompt reply. I have a couple more questions. I pinned the hem up to the finished length. Is it best to leave the original hem in tact or open it? And am I stitching in the crease or below the crease? If so, how much below the crease? I am working on this dress tomorrow. I want to make sure the lining is not longer than the dress. I hope this makes sense. I will probably watch your great video several times before I start this project... Great Video

lol 😅 This one wasn’t stressful. It did take longer than I expected because I needed so many inches longer. But I knew from past experiences that it could be done. Knowledge gave me confidence. Plus, this was a problem I was solving for someone else. It wasn’t a mistake I made. Those are so much more stressful. Years ago, when I owned the bridal shop, I had an extreme situation that was so stressful that I definitely needed a vacation. I didn’t communicate well with the bride and hemmed her gown at the usual length. Just barely touching the floor. So she could walk down the aisle. But she had in her mind a vision of it cascading in front of her. There was a trend for a few years of long hems. Well that was stressful because it was my fault and I wanted her to be happy. I was able to steam stretch it 2 1/2 inches. It was just like she wanted it to be. 😅 whew!
