I hate how much college and work makes you dependent on a smartphone!! i'd love to go full the dumbphone route, but I can barely get through the day without using NFC, QR codes, two-factor authentication, or some mandatory app. My solution is the Unihertz Jelly Star. It's a tiny phone so it's less tempting to use, and I've dumbed it down as much as possible. I use the Indistractible launcher and keep the whole thing in black and white. It's finnicky and imperfect, but it works for me. I don't know what I'll do when it stops working. (it's also a bonus that it's cute enough to get complements instead of judgement)

There are a couple of browser extensions that block youtube shorts! There is 'untrap from youtube' and 'block youtube shorts'. If you have the app, there is an app called 'wallhabit' that can block yt shorts within the app!

Very smart going to dumb phone. I have been using a Kyocera rugged flip phone for a few years now and it works for me except I don't like using T9 and would like a better camera. The good side is that I am not being tracked by google.

I say try to find ways to make your smartphone less adictive, for example I use Minimalist phone as my main home page, it uses text instead of app icons and also gives you a timer when you're on an app like instagram or Facebook (you can choose wich apps has that timer) For youtube shorts, I have two options for you: KZbin Revance and GrayJay Revance has options that makes it so it removes completely the short feature, making youtube a much less addictive place But the best one (for me at least) is GrayJay, it's goal is basically making youtube more about the creators and less about platforms, you have a limited amount of videos on your recommendation (like 15) and shorts are just not there (not that I know of), I use it and it is such a good transition Sidenotes: You need to pay for minimalist phone, but both of the youtube apps are free, tho they are not official apps, so you need to dig on the web for that

Whatsapp is my biggest limitation for getting a dumb phone... it's used for everything here even for work, no one uses text messages. When they bring out a dumbphone + whatsapp, I'm sold

I know this is super late but i hope you didn't give up on your journey! But you can get the Cat s22 flip in the uk and it works! I bought mine on ebay for 70 pound which is super cheap imo because brand new they were 200 pounds and it does a lot more than these dumbphones. Which By the way, out of these all, I think the s22 is the best because I have had it for 6 months now, havent used social media once! But have Spotify, maps, whatsapp.

we all need to have a dumb phone; but ye youtube shorts can get you sometimes haha..all jokes aside it is IMPORTANT to feel your brain with quality stuff, not trash and useless..so if you will use your smartphone you have to SELECT, and FILTRATE the toxic garbage.

There is for me.. The cat s22 flip, ive been through 5 flip phones and this one does the job. i have less than 1 hour screentime per day thanks to It and its still has all the necessities. Ive also once given up on dumphones and within 2 months was a full on phone addict once more. for me now there is no going back to those drug bricks :).

Keeping my phone in black and white as well as removing my fingerprint or face ID to unlock my phone and instead putting a long password I have to type each time stops the reactionary reaching for it

My smart phone is not so smart when: 1) when ever i went to nowhere island 🤣 2) when ever no internet quote left 😭 3) when ever its out of juice🔋 The only best thing i can remember from dumbphone is blind typing. The tips i have, may give you rather such paranoid thought sadly. Well, the phone signal might give you cancer. I used to put my phone on the left pocket of my trouser. Now i have lump on my left leg. From now on, i dont want to pocket my phone anymore. Or hold it all the time (unless i put it into flight mode). Another tip is: you may have smartphone with small/very minimum RAM and storage. Like 3GB of ram, and 32gb of storage. By then you aint gonna install so much. And lets be honest here. Most smartphone got youtube installed. Thats a redflag is you think that installed tiktk is a redflag. Even way bigger redflag if you phone is android.

Part of dumb phone usage for me is delegating computer activities to an actual computer. In this way I have to intentionally sit down, do the thing I am intending to do on the computer in a way that I am present.

This is a good conclusion. I found out replacing bad habits with good is the best way. For example, gym instead of reels. Sounds simple but it's applying it that's hard

I had problems with switching to a dumb phone because I still had to use a smart phone for 2 factor for work. It showed me I needed much better discipline and a dumbed down version of my smart phone might be the way to go but for now i'm still going to see how it goes. I already didn't use social media and only wanted to cut back and mostly needed to cut some specific people out of my life that I was having a hard time to and didn't have discipline enough to do on my own.

Been considering this for some time now. And I can relate to KZbin shorts and how one might think it’s any better than tik tok. Thankfully my algorithm is carpentry/crafts/tech so at least it’s educational but not perfect. I still get a lot of sketches or prank shorts. Personally trying to find the right balance. If you have deadlines or serious goals you want to achieve then dumb phone all the way. If you’re trying to curb or correct habits I think things like color shifting to greyscale, adjusted white balance and certain app blockers might help. And putting the phone far away at bedtime and reading books should help correct bad bed time. As of this comment I’m only halfway thru the vid so maybe you’ve already addressed all this. At the end of the day, it comes down to discipline. Although tactics like having a dumbphone can help! I have a normal smartphone and I just use discipline to cut back. The key is mindfulness. Whenever you catch yourself scrolling 'mindlessly', that's your cue to stop. I watch YT, go on socials, after a long long day. But I don't stay for long simply because the content out there is made to entice, irritate, or monetize you. There are very few wholesome content out there! Protect your energy everyone.

I use a japanese flip phone I bought on Ebay, a Kyocera 902kc. I previously quitted it and went back to my smartphone, but 2 months ago or something I came back to this flip phone and have been using it since then. It has android 8, so WhatsApp works fine by linking it to my smartphone (so all files and storage stuff ends in my smartphone) Definitively it's not perfect, and more than usability, I use it because I visually like it. I don't really think in the concept of "dumbphone" anymore, honestly I just like typing on that keyboard. I think the best thing of all of this is that I stopped doomscrolling, that was the biggest issue. Just because of that, worth it. Good video btw 👍

for the youtube shorts/facebook reels problem this is what I did: every video you see (like when you are on the youtube/fb main page not when you are already scrolling them) press the three little dots in the upper corner and say "not interested" to EVERY video you see. there will be like 5 or 6 at one time. then scroll down and repeat. Eventually you wont be shown any of the shorts. but if you start watching them again they will appear. Also have you looked into the Kyocera flip phones? They are around $200 but are made in Japan and supposedly are great and long time phones. They are able to download Spotify so I am sure whatsapp can be used.

Treat my comment as a letter: To all my friends! I've been living without social media for 11 months now, my life so much better. Some friend said KZbin is social media too, well I don't treat it that way, been using KZbin since 2006 and I treat KZbin as an alternative to TV and only use it on my PC. There is a youtuber shared an extension called Unhook for KZbin on PC and you should try it, can disable Shorts, comment section and many more. On a phone, since most phone cannot uninstall KZbin, you can use KZbin ReVanced v19.08.35 Mod APK from Jim Tech, it has a feature to block ads, disable KZbin shorts, almost like Unhook extension on PC. If you still wanna use social media, delete everything other than KZbin, KZbin is enough in my opinion. For those who use social media to do business, delete your personal one and only use your business account, its gonna be okay, don't worry. There are ways to remove KZbin shorts on laptop/desktop, but it's more difficult on the mobile app. Definitely possible (I have looked into it before for the same reasons as you) but it's not the most simple thing.

i use BLOCKIT, an app from two Italian guys, it is super effective to break addiction

I think the nearest compromise I could make would be installing an Android app that blocked certain social media apps at certain times, say 10 pm to 8 am. Just getting a proper night's sleep every night would do me the world of good. I guess even just using my watch alarm and putting the phone across the room would help. Unfortunately I am very shy and lonely with almost all my friends on Discord I would really struggle to give that up. Great video as always!

I was planning on getting a Nokia 2720 Flip, but then I found out that WhatsApp is being discontinued on phones that run KaiOS. That means that if you want WhatsApp, which for many people is simply a necessity these days, then you need a smartphone. It really sucks. I've ended up getting a Cat S22 Flip instead, which was recommended by the r/dumbphone subreddit. It's the perfect place to help you look for the phone that's right for you. And the main point they make is that it's all about making compromises, because there's no phone out there that perfectly meets your specific needs.

Greetings, I have prepared an Excel document for this very purpose, being an avid nokia (and only nokia, since they are the only worthy brand out there) user myself. Mapping properties like camera, 4G support, dual SIM, SD card. And even the option to disable those annoying key tones and the existence of a music player... which are essential IMO. I have come to the conclusion that Nokia 215 and 225 are the best, and feature all the properties mentioned above.... The nokia 215 has no camera which saves several tens of dollars... Good deal for me since the camera sucks anyways... The 6300 doesn't, surprisingly, work with my country's SIM cards.
