As long as I can get a lounge chair for sunbathing, I will be fine. Some people hold those chairs for the whole day, which is very rude. They indicate that the gym is "free".🤣Well, most cruise ships have free fitness centers. Thank you for the informative video.

Outstanding interview! You asked good relevant questions and allowed the guest to speak freely. Earned a subscription! Having attended a number of courses at the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS) in Linthicum, Maryland I could relate to his stories. Interesting, 100% of the students that I personally met strongly preferred working on cargo ships and strove to avoid passenger & ferry ships.

I always wondered if the passengers had to give consent for their arguments to be shown on tv? If I lost it with the check in person I wouldn’t want that airing on tv! Maybe there was some incentive for them to

Another thing I disagree with is that the Edge is setting some design standard. I'd argue it is not. Besides the bow, it's following very closely to the NCL type of experience with the Haven, just offering less family-oriented things. And while Celebrity didn't get the venue size wrong like NCL did, I don't see any great move forward. Lots of specialty restaurants, more reasons to charge people more with up-charged restaurants, drink packages and the like. Eden is like a similar area on RCI. The older Celebrity class ships in their time, particularly the Century class, added true Celebrity touches like television and screen art that no other ship did, an escalator on the ship, very provocative art, roaming performers, yet stayed true to the traditional food/presentation. The whole Cirque thing was shown on the Galaxy in 1997, the 'Cirque du Galaxy." No, they didn't have the digital theater in the round but it was a Cirque type of show. I think the Edge is ultra-trendy and trends come and go by definition so in 2033 or so, the ship may be seen very differently than how it is now. I'm not saying it isn't satisfactory. but I think in some ways Celebrity did consensus changes that are safe. Virgin is more daring. May not be my cup of tea or a lot of people's, but they're more daring in not charging more for restaurants, a different type of buffet, and their entertainment is more unique.

I appreciate that this is a really beautifully photographed video. Some things the narrator says I don't agree with. I think this ship focuses on a lot of different dining venues, most for pay, and the ambiance and best decor are in the restaurants. I do find the tables for two to be too close to each other. While Eden's food may be best, I don't think the overall ambiance in that restaurant matches the food. Murano, has the food and service and ambiance on Celebrity IMO. It's smaller, more exclusive feeling and dark yet warm. But the place where the Ascent and every Edge class ship falls short is in bars and lounges. There's nothing wrong with the bars, so let's get to lounges. Flash back to 1998 and I'm aboard the Galaxy having champagne, caviar and an assortment of finger food, only paying for the champagne, in the Stratosphere lounge that is divided nicely into sections and has great forward views of the ocean, while a string trio plays. This is a premium experience that just isn't available on this ship. You can try this in Eden, but it doesn't work the same way. There's also nothing like the Savoy on this ship. That's an ultra-elegant aft-lounge that almost had a ballroom yet hip feel to it where one could play a variety of music and dance to it on a nice-sized dance floor. The Club has nothing of the elegance of this ballroom like lounge. I'm sorry, I just can' hop from restaurant to restaurant and see shows and feel that's a complete shipboard experience. Yes, the Martini Bar is a lounge area but it is in the lobby and has a lobby feel to it. And the Club and Eden are used for shows yet not really designed for them. The shows are fine, the venues not optimal. I wish the design had taken the decor of the Luminae, Normandie, Le Voyage, and made a different social space, not a restaurant, where one can have these quieter, more exclusive and personalized experiences in it. I wish the ship had a real pub in it where you could sing along to Irish music or folk tunes in its own enclosed space, not an open tiered space. I guess Celebrity doesn't have that space but the Craft's Social area on the Solstice is so much nicer to enjoy watching sporting events or having beer or wine. I just wish they spent more areas of the ship on places to chill out or lounge in addition to the rather large variety of eateries (and shops). Some of us aren't into that much dining and want to do other things in a premium atmosphere. For this reason, I find this ship incomplete. It has some pretty areas but overall, I just think it along with the rest of the Edge class could be offer more premium social areas. Eden is themed but not elegant. The Club is modern but not elegant and even the Martini Bar doesn't offer the elegance or ambiance or feel of what some of the restaurants offer. You get the intimate dining on the Edge class but not the intimate social spots. Solstice works way better for that.

Absolutely brilliant episode, everything what Jane says about the filming is completely true. Loved watching airlines back in the day, love watching excerpts on KZbin. I appeared on a a couple of series's or cruise with stelios, in the small yellow ship, it was great to hear your discuss on it.. stelios was fab to work for.

Surely P&O Australia's Pacific Explorer would be the natural fit, still a small ship and her interior would match Ambience given they were both refurbished by P&O Australia at a similar time.

Great interview lads, Jane and the show were brilliant. Sorry I have to say I prefer Ryanair over EasyJet; flown with both of them in the last couple of years and Ryanair aircraft are better - more comfortable and slightly more space. Didn’t have an issue with overhead baggage when we last flew with them.

Very much agree with Jane regarding the dying art of personal communication. I know a retired couple who were recently wrongly charged by EasyJet for overweight hold luggage. The check-in guy realised his error once it was pointed out to him, but was unable to rectify it and instructed them to phone EasyJet customer services. They got absolutely nowhere because the foreign call centre staff could not grasp the issue or UK contract law and were literally speaking from a script. EasyJet even contested the credit card chargeback that had been initiated, on the grounds it related to "oversized hand baggage'. They didn't even have any! The whole saga could have been resolved by a simple phone call from somebody who understood - the personal touch in other words.

@ you repeatedly compare her to carnival and other cruise ships. I don’t disagree with your conclusions mind, but the comparisons on amenities is not really on the level. In particular the entertainment options. Many other comments point this out as well. A go kart track, or similar such as more pools, would be preposterous on a liner designed for trans Atlantic passages. Also don’t get me wrong I did enjoy the video but being a fan of the Cunard queens I found it a bit unfair in that way 🙂

When it comes to design flaws it would be worth mentioning the lack of a double skin. The Olympic class ships were designed with a double bottom but not with a double hull itself whereas other ships built many years earlier had (but the flip side of that being that much earlier steam ships didn't have electric watertight doors etc). And one such ship was Brunel's Great Eastern which struck rocks on one voyage without any concern of the safety of the ship itself when in fact the hole ripped into her was many times greater the cubic feet size of what Titanic received. OK they were different circumstances but also many decades apart with a very simplistic part of engineering that you would, in hindsight, think would have become a mandatory requirement on all ships by the 1900's....let alone new, 'technologically advanced' ocean liners of the day. Also the cruise ship that was mentioned with the back flow flooding of the toilet system was possibly the MTS Oceanos that went down in 1991 with everyone safely evacuated.

What a fantastic interview with Dr. Payne! As the former Cruise Director for Rotterdam VI for over five years, I can honestly say that this ship holds a very special place in my heart. She truly has a soul, and it was such a joy to sail on her every day. The crew was incredibly proud of her - there was always a deep sense of admiration for the ship and her legacy. While I know many Holland America Line fans still miss her, it’s so comforting to see that she has found such a wonderful new home with Fred. Olsen. It’s clear that they’ve taken exceptional care of her, preserving the elegance and charm that made her so beloved. I couldn’t be more thrilled to know she’s still sailing and offering such an unforgettable experience to guests. There’s a lot of pride in seeing her continue to thrive!

My mother has cruised with a number of lines but is diamond with Cunard which would show where her loyalty would be. She would be the ideal person to follow as described because to see her initial thoughts about things like the toilets etc. While she wouldnt lose it, but her reactions would be great to record. It may be that as she was medevacked off her last cruise that she wont be allowed to sail again, she would have been a great candidate though. I am not a cruiser, but love your work.
