DOS:2, Fallout: 4 and Technomancer have some awesome romances in them. DA:O and BG3 are the absolutely gold standard though. I love them so much. For me romance options are pretty much essential. Don't get me wrong, the gameplay, combat, greater story and world building must also be good... But nothing will EVER convince me that a bunch of 20-40 something heroes in forced proximity and high stress, perpetual life and death situations for months or even years, would NOT need to (at LEAST) blow off steam. Romance NEEDS to be seamlessly and artfully woven through the greater story though. That's why I wasn't as fond of DA:2 onwards and Mass Effect 2 onward (at least as far as the romances go). The way it was done in Skyrim and Pillars of Eternity: Deadfire however? Nope. One was literally just a token effort (like literally, they swapped tokens and that was it!!) and the other had most romances poorly and grudgingly written with a mountain of haze thrown toward players who wanted romances in the game. It needs to be authentic, it needs to be something the writers WANT to include, and it needs to be well woven or it should be left out - and if that means I don't buy it that's fine. Rather lose a couple of customers than ruin an otherwise good game!!

Very few games do romance well, but the best "romance" I ever experienced was in Disco Elysium. There is this fisherwoman you can go on a date with, she rejects you even before you actually go and doesn't change her mind, but it's the most wholesome and lovely experience of romance I have had in a video game that goes beyond wish-fulfillment and "do quest > have sex > profit". This made me realize how shallow a lot of video game romances are and how artificial they sometimes make their characters feel, but it's not because of the romance itself, but the fact it's built around the player and player's fantasy and not around the character and their preferences. This goes beyond character's sexuality if that is what you're thinking, very few games actually take into account players actions, even games that do actually fail at this, because they don't track what you actually did, but rather a change of "approval" that occurred when you did something. There's another layer to this as well. When you decide your characters are romanceable you already limit yourself and what kind of characters you can create in that box, notice how Veilguard and BG3 cast of companions is mostly composed of conventionally attractive individuals, even those who might seem niche or stray a bit out of bounds of being "conventionally attractive" are still rather attractive, this also limits the type of personalities you can make, because all your characters need to be appealing as romance options. I love romance in RPGs, but I feel like it's time to make it more interesting and complex than the classic BioWare formula. This probably won't be a lot of people's cup of tea, but I'd like to see more real characters who are not created to cater to player's needs and who are more their own people.

I somewhat agree and don't. I think a nice and sweet romance has the potential to uplift a game but by no means are they important. Recent examples of romance in videogames (BG3) have been really uncomfortably written in my opinion. I was really taken aback by how forward Karlach was in my first playthrough when I was trying to romance Gale. I really don't like it when a character I'm so certain I showed no interest in and was just being nice ,aggressively says they want to ride me... like woah hold on there. You know it seems like games are kind of treading that fanfic/p*rn animation territory with BG3 and I don't really know what the purpose is like I am sitting down with a game to have fun I'm not going to jerk it to Gale's weird spirit in the sky sex scene like who is this made for? I hope the romances in DAV are more normal but there's only 1 hot guy in Veilguard anyway and none of the women interest me like Morrigan did so I will probably not interface with the romance at all.
@notawitchrАй бұрын
Yeah, BG3 can be a bit too much sometimes... But we are all adults, we can just ignore the parts that don't click with us personally, if there is a lot of what we like in the game. And about DAV: by that "only 1 hot guy" - you probably mean Varric, right? )))
@vonderfaak63572 ай бұрын
It's gotten out of control, one is not allowed to be-friend the companions anymore, and the male companions are viscious in their attempts and have to be repeatedly shut down. Astarion for instance is hard to get approval on, and most of ones dialouge option with him is flirting or insulting on the checks where approval +/- is possible. And Gale has to be rejected atleast 3 times, and even then he will take you to the dream where you sit together holding hands looking each other deep in the eyes and smiling creepily. Even if you never flirt the entire cast will throw themselves at you after dealing with the druids one way or another. It also takes away from their character and turns them inconsistent, every single one of them are actual harem anime girls that throw themselves at the player for no apperent reason. The player should be the one initating romance not the other way around, it's fine having one or two horndogs as companions but when every single one of them is player sexual without any prefrences it makes them shallow characters. If the player could play as a pixie Halsin would still shove his footlong in. In conclusion, the level bg3 took it was creepy, and nobody asked for it. The game itself is great but the sexual and romance part of it I feel was horrible. I'm aware I'm in the minority. If people thought like me there wouln't be countless animes coming out every year that has a bland un-interesting main character with a flock of people throwing themselves at him.

@@vonderfaak6357 yes, i agree, that is basically the worst thing that BG3 gave us - the romance is not an option in this game ))) it is a given. Admittedly, if the hetro romance is the only option, I skip it. I like what I like.
@notawitchr2 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's kinda hard to imagine that, for example, exclisive male gay romances were included in games so late. And now everybody seems to have an opinion on why the romance options should not be bisexual.
@benl21402 ай бұрын
I disagree. I won't deny that romance is a pretty big part of the human experience, but it's not the only important part, and it's fine if a game chooses to focus on something else. Tyranny provides a fascinating look into power and complicitly within an authoritarian system, and I don't think its examination of those topics would be improved if they added an option to romance Verse. But on the topic of romances, for games that do include them, one thing I want to see more of is having choices within a romance. In most RPGs, the only real romance-related choice you make is in which character to pursue. I'd prefer it if, i.e. you had multiple different "flirt" dialogue options with an NPC, each of which could take the romance down a slightly different route.
@notawitchr2 ай бұрын
Yes, it's not the only important part, and there are other things that RPGs do not explore, like, for example, parenthood. But romance is one of the most exciting parts)) And Tyranny is a bad example - because it's not finished. Or, maybe, it should have had a sequel - which could definitely tackle the topic of romance in a world that's taken over by evil. Also - totally agree about the last part - there should be more freedom of RP inside the relationship. Poor developers, it is so hard to make every player happy... )

I think that romance should be included in these games, and I've found the stories really interesting from a writer's point of view, but all of the actual, like... Romance, and sex, and whatever. It just feels alien to me. I feel like it should be done, but it should definitely be an optional mechanic to engage with. With BG3, even though the game was otherwise really well done throughout, I just didn't ever feel comfortable progressing my relationships with any of the companions beyond a certain point because, at that point, I just no longer felt I could understand or relate to them. I think you're... right... generally. Inquisition almost let me down, but Cassandra managed to make for a good romance, even if I personally didn't find her attractive enough. I think Veilguard is going to be the real problem though, especially since BioWare confirmed there will be no romances outside of the party members. From a statistical standpoint, Veilguard has only 2.5 romances for straight males, since Taash looks too masculine. I count Harding as half a romance, not because I'm trying to say something about her height, but rather because she can be technically romanced already by the Inquisitor, which should logically lock her out in such a worldstate. I was planning to romance Neve, but her voice, personality, and now the redesign on her appearance has me doubting that. If I play Veilguard at all, then this might be the first time my protagonist goes without a romance. Or I might just headcanon that he's already married. As for my other two protags, my Cousland played the long game and married Anora, whose romance is actually not well defined, but I enjoyed the subtle nature of it. As for Hawke, I think Hawke is BioWare's character, not the player's, so I just played the default Marian archer and had her romance Sebastian, another undefined romance without much content to it. But I think these are the best romances for the characters. In each example, my straight characters chose straight romances, which is important for compatibility. Neve being bisexual, or "pansexual" as BioWare is calling it, is also a negative trait that puts me off wanting to romance her with Rook. I think the best solution for these types of games is to have a customized romance option, where the player can create a romance for their custom protag. This means making the romance ideal in terms of appearance and voice, and also choosing from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Then the romance appears as an NPC in a certain part of the world and it is up to the protag to find and romance that character. But, the game can also have programmed romance characters too. But then things get tricky. You would need a variety of female and male characters who are straight, bisexual, and homosexual for players to choose from, and that seems like a drain on resources. I understand the want for detailed romances, but if the resources can't be spared for those, then I say just have topical romances and let the player roleplay by having a wide variety to choose from, even if those romances are shallow.
@notawitchr2 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Very well put - about Hawke being a Bioware character and not ours (i always thought that they have the least RP-freedom in the Bioware games). And for the Veilguard - i try not to have big expectations, but also it's to soon to be disappointed when the game is not released yet. )
@BelieveIt10512 ай бұрын
@@notawitchr Thanks. My concern with Veilguard's romances are twofold. 1. The narrow options. In my case, Neve is really the only option since she is the only human female, and I plan to play a human male, and there are already things I don't like about her. 2. Rook's dialogue options in the dialogue wheel seem even more limited than in DA2. As you pointed out in your video, there is only ever one actual romance option (per discussion), and it will probably be that way in Veilguard as well. Only Veilguard seems to have the additional worry of Rook not having much of a personality either, as the dialogue options are quite limited. The recent qunari mage gameplay demo shows Rook speaking for the player without dialogue prompts A LOT. And the few prompts that do appear seem to have either/or responses or at least two responses that seem too similar. So even if Neve's character arc sees her improving massively, Rook himself might be uninspired.
