I mean why not try and create a bomb squad yourself? They probably should just ban South Africans from everything to satisfy their ego. We give Scotland a run for their money in Bagpipes, we are often in the podium for many different martial arts, we export some really good Soccer player (because why play for Bafana?). The only reason we don't have better Olympians is because you need money to be able to live and keep you going until you can get to the Olympics to even make it it back. South African has also been in the top 3 in the international Cosplay competition at comic con San Diego for the past few years. We only got our first Comic Con in 2019

Quite right, Cameron. Interestingly England and New Zealand have tried bomb squad tactics but it didn't work at all. But that's because I don't think they understand it. As you've mentioned in your comment, we are a nation of winners!

Precisely. I can't help but feel that there is an underlying tone of jealousy but also an aspect of them not being able to handle the fact "some little country in Africa" is beating them and they can't do anything about it.

we were complaining too in the New Zealand dominance era with Carter and McCaw etc. We blamed coaches, we blamed players - sometimes justified, sometimes not. Our coaches and players back then didn't have an answer for that NZ team - they were practically untouchable, even when we (or anyone) somehow beat them in a single game we knew they were still the best in the world. That's where SA is now but the wheel turns, it won't last forever but I'm glad it's lasted beyond a fluke. Rassie's leadership and bets have paid off. We've got a few once-in-a-generation players like Eben, Kolbe and others. We were really struggling 10 years ago to keep our best talent. Despite the country's challenges, our rugby is in a great space. Rassie can't be coach forever, the next guy will have a massive shadow to walk into - good luck to that guy.

Thank you so much, Pieter! Yes, you're right back then was not a great time for us as Bok supporters. I think part of the Rassie turnaround has also been to put systems in place to make sure that we never slump like that again. That NZ team in the 2010s was formidable. They were just a different kind of machine. Hopefully Rassie will be with us until at least the 2027 Rugby World Cup but then it will be interesting to see what happens then. I think I should do a video about that!

From an SA point of view one must remember that we have had some great scrumhalves in the past like Fourie du Preez and Joost. It's difficult to imagine that he can be better. From what I've seen, he is very good but considering him the best player of all time is pushing it. I'm not even convinced that he is the best scrumhalf ever, in fact I think both Du Preez and Joost were better and then we are only talking about Springboks.

I'm with you, Nic. I rate Fourie Du Preez as the best. In terms of all-time greats we can also throw men like George Gregan, Justin Marshall, Aaron Smith, Gareth Edwards etc into the mix. So many greats that is seems ludicrous to crown one guy who let's be honest is mid-career and has never helped his team beat the Boks or All Blacks away from home as the best of them all.

This whole ridiculous argument about DuPont being a goat came from him coming top in a poll voted on by fans on Planet Rugby where he won after his performance in last years European Champions Cup and since then this whole thing has been blown out of all proportion. From winning a fans poll on Planet Rugby to fuelling debates on rugby social media content somehow has led to this being interpreted on this show as a SH or South Africa vs the NH argument which it isn’t really. There is no doubt that he is currently one of the best players in the game at the moment but I am not sure until he retires that any goat conversation has any merit or that anyone . In anycase calling a player a goat without a baseline or any form of assessing a players greatness is purely subjective and based on the opinion of that fan and likely what team he supports rather than a concerted attempt to disrespect other players from different hemispheres. I don’t think that DuPont is a goat, perhaps at the end of his career he might well be in the conversation but that shouldn’t stop an acknowledgement that DuPont is currently also a world class player in the same way that PDT or Etsebeth are thought to be. It does not detract from their achievements, it just means he is also in the conversation. I don’t see what is wrong with that . Rugby fans from all countries are always going to uligise and consider one of their player may be considered the best or a goat and so what ? That’s what fans do. And even if they do call their player the best over your own , it’s nothing to get upset about and nor does it mean that your players are being disrespected, it’s just someone else’s opinion .

Thank you for that comment, Patrick. You're right it's just a thing that has taken on a life of its own. As you and I both know very well social media is not an accurate representation of anything but there's certainly a heated debate that has emerged. Often the minority is also the most vocal which doesn't help. I agree with you that he is undoubtedly a great player. My contention is I just don't think we can say right now he is the greatest ever. I think you agree with that. by the same token I'm not really a fan of comparisons in any event. So many things change from era to era that to me it's impossible to compare. Further to that in rugby how do you even begin comparing a scrumhalf to a prop for example? But as you say, this is what fans do! For me, it's a fun chat at a braai but at the end of the day it's just each of us expressing our opinion.

@@frontrowrugby As an American rugby player, coach, and viewer I do not think that SA 'sucks.' SA has been consistently one of the best teams in the world. Very few rugby fans, French or otherwise, will argue with that. What I hear them saying in the comments is that SA's winning results on the international stage do not make SA fans authoritative on what NH player is great and not great through the lens of how that player has performed against SA or in SA. I agree with them. Lomu never won a World Cup. He will forever remain a legend of the game. Dupont may never win a World Cup, yet he remains a legend in the making. No SA fan will convince the world otherwise.

@ Firstly let me say it's cool that you're watching my channel as an American. I'm sure you can appreciate you're not my target audience but you're very welcome here! Thank you!! Secondly, to clarify I meant our domestic teams suck in comparison to the French clubs. Many years ago our domestic teams were very strong but in the professional era the best players will play where the best salaries are on offer so many Springbok players play in France and Japan for example. Finally you're quite right in terms of Lomu and how he is regarded. I said something similar in the video - just because you haven't won a World Cup doesn't mean you're not a great player. I think our point is more this: Everyone knows in world rugby the two most difficult places to win are South Africa and New Zealand. Dupont has only ever played one Test in either country and that was early on in his career as a substitute. We'd love to see him come to our countries and test himself against the very best.

The difference between Dupont and PSDT or Kolbe is that he plays in the most competitive league in the world and he manages to be the best player of this league MOTM final, regular season best player while PSDT and many others SA play in the japanese league. He also performs in the Champions Cup (just check last year final, this may be the best individual performance ever). He also does the same thing in VI nations (3times best player) and he's also awesome during RWC (he was literally the best french olayer during this 1/4 final). So if you dont watch the best european club competition, the best league, VI nations and RWC you can't see how good he is. In europe we do watch Test match and Rugby championship but its ehat, like 8-10 games ? You pretend that a player who performs for such few games can be compared to a player that play 3 times more games ? Doesnt work for me.

It seems to me that the French put a very high value on what a player does at club level. South Africans don't. International level is where players are judged. Perhaps because you have the luxury of having the strongest domestic league in the world to use as a barometer. Just to be clear, no one is saying Dupont is not a great player. South Africans are simply questioning how he can so confidently be held up as the greatest player of all-time. Mind you, not even from the French but by the British!

Respect to all players as you say in the northern hemisphere however if you don't come south, we don't know who you are... Rugby is still the same game, but things have changes with stats. There's a reason PSDT wins player of the year, he's in the top position for tackles, gain line advantage, charge downs. Name the stat, he's probably #1. Gimme the stats for all players and we can talk who is on top of which category i.e. points, metres made, charge downs, line outs caught, furthest box kick etc. Which brings up a point: should there be a forward and back player of the year. e.g. if Ramos kicks 300 points in a season and PSDT makes 300 tackles who do you pick (possible have 2 different trophies).
@frontrowrugby

This is an excellent point you've raised. It's one of the reasons why I don't actually like the goat debate. How do you compare a backline player to a forward? In fact, how do you compare a loose forward to a front rower? I prefer to look at it as us being blessed to see so many wonderful players and ideally we should just sit back and enjoy it. And yes, sure it's fun to have the discussions and the debates. But as we both know, sometimes it gets a little heated. I genuinely think it's a small, but very vocal, minority though.

It's interesting to me how many people talk about what he does for Toulouse. Okay, but surely the ultimate yardstick is what a player does at the highest level.

So whose fault is it that the other team had 14 players on the field? Would you have preferred the Springboks take a player off in those cases to even it out?

Jim Hamilton wasn't an England player, he played for Scotland I rate Dupont - the French are a different team with him, but its true that I have not seen enough him. So its true that there's bias, NH always rave about their player, but I always think, I'll reserve judgement when I see that player play the Boks IN SA... Against the Boks, tho, I was really impressed with Mauvaka and Antonio and their impact

Yes, quite right. Jim indeed played for Scotland. He was however born in England and played under-19 and under-21 for them. But yes, I misspoke. Agree with you that the ultimate test is to see how a player fares against us and the All Blacks. Dupont has not done that yet. I thought Mauvaka and Atonio were brilliant at the World Cup!

SA fans trying so hard to rationalize their Dupont-bashing and making it look like an objective POV is hillarious. The fact only you "collectively" hold a *feint* disregard for AD9 should challenge yourselves. You brought up some fallacious arguments in this vid. "We're used to World class players", doesn't mean they compare to Dupont. This would be an argument in a debate of who's the biggest talents pool, not which individual is the best. You feel disrespected, and you're going to feel even more so reading what's next but I swear I love you: you have a 3rd World country mentality when it comes to rugby because it might be the only field you're doing great at the minute and the Boks represents you internationally in a positive way (with Musk), that's part of why you're so invested and tribalistic (a bit like Argentineans and soccer for example). Touching the Boks is touching the gem of SA. You want all the praise and can't stand that most consider a player outside of yours and your hemisphere as the best. 5:27 A great player from here comes along and you freak out that he gets more credit than yours (who are salivated over by NH opinionists contrarily to what you say). Putting Dupont in the same list as Blanco or Benazzi, saying you're not even sure he's France's GOAT, that he's just a very good player like a lot of SA podcasters, further undermines your credibility. Also, let's stop with the NH vs SH bullshit. These are heterogeneous groups of nations with different interests, cultures etc. The Brits, who are the majority in the North, are closer to South Africa which is in the Commonwealth. I know you had a troublesome history too with them, but if there's an odd man in the group, it's France (only non-anglo-saxon top tier team and historical rival outside of sports too). Sorry if I seem arrogant and abrasive but so do you guys, probably because Afrikaners and French share a lot of DNA in common.😘

Since you say you love me/us I'll respond in kind. Firstly thank you for watching my video. It's nice to have some Frenchman watching but I'm sure you appreciate that you're not the target audience for what I do. Still, if you're up for some friendly banter then you're welcome here. Secondly, I think we need to bear in mind that we are speaking in general terms here. Of course it's never everyone who says something or thinks something. With that in mind, it is true that collectively we do feel disrespected. And yes, it may well have something to do with our colonial history, especially our feelings towards England. You speak of our third world country mentality but you need to understand something here. In France if you win the World Cup people will be happy for a few days and then go back to their lives. In South Africa and Argentina, when we win the World Cup that is the only thing that brings happiness to our people in many cases. If you think I have no credibility because I rate Blanco or Benazzi ahead of Dupont on my all-time list then so be it. Laurent Cabannes remains my favourite French player. Thank you again for watching the video and taking the time to leave a comment.

@@frontrowrugby Thank you for kindly answering to my slightly offensive comment, should've been less abrupt (and shorter😅), and for the content. Some things had to be said after all the excessive anti-Dupont propaganda from Boks fans mostly. I thought this video was made to explain Saffas criticism toward Dupont to a foreign audience, especially since it's in English, not Afrikaans. I understand where you as South Africans are coming from, and I respect SA more than what my comment shows. Also, France is on the way to becoming a 3rd World country to, and sport is more and more used here too to create an artificial sentiment of unity in an increasingly multicultural, therefore divided society. Not as much as SA where rugby is fundamental, I know. That's why I think the passion for the Springboks might cloud the judgement of Dupont. Saying he's the best doesn't take away anything from your achievements. We all have preferences, Dupont isn't even my fav player, but he's "objectively" above the likes of Blanco and Dusautoir. *_Dankie. Beste groete._*

@@MC_Jean_Raclette I appreciate where you're coming from. So my channel is for Springbok fans. When New Zealanders or English come here and complain it's quite entertaining (as you can imagine) but Bok fans are the target audience. It's in English because I want it to be accessible to all South Africans - we have 11 official languages and many don't speak or understand more than two of them. Merci!!

Your argument is pointless, this is not because you win the world cup (with 6 to 8 games top) that you have the best player in the world. Your parallel you start with football, could be a good conterargument, messi has been recognized has the best player several years before he won only his first world cup.

Please check the stats for example international champions ship for clubs where south african played. The best player 2024 is playing in a second zone rugby champions ship and he made only 6 game at international level during the year to he elected.

But that's what I was saying. Just because he hasn't won the World Cup, doesn't mean he cannot be considered a great. But according to you it was pointless me saying that. Thanks for watching my video though.

I disagree with your assessment starting at 7:00. The argument that we can’t hail DuPont because he has no World Cup is fair when considering he’s a player in a roster capable of winning. A good Namibian can be given a pass but we can’t give that same pass to players in competitive teams that consistently underperform when at the highest stage. It’s why when we count the greatest Boks we list guys with world cups because the teams have always been good enough to compete, same as the greatest All Blacks. We name the World Cup winners because the All black teams have always been talented. France is talented. Let’s not forget they only lost by a point to the Boks. That’s enough to show you they themselves could have won world cups…”greatest ever” conversation begins and ends with winning the highest prize in World Rugby.

Cheers bud. I don't think it's a massive disagreement to be honest. I think it's just a matter of preference. After all, Jonah Lomu never won a World Cup either. In fact, neither did Christian Cullen, Andrew Mehrtens, Justin Marshall or Josh Kronfeld for that matter. But I'm with you. The reason we mention the World Cup winners is because that is generally speaking the widely accepted starting point. While I'm a bit more flexible on the players, I would definitely say that for a coach that is 100% non-negotiable. You are judged by the trophies you won.

4:17 and i assume to say to you won world cups with so many helps of referees. You should have two of your world cup if at the time these referees were not south emisphere referees. not to mantionned that the most powerfull federation represented in the instance of world rugby is south africa. with all the sin who come with it. Money money money ...

I don't know if you know this but three of our four World Cup finals were refereed by northern hemisphere referees. South Africa the most powerful federation at World Rugby? You must be joking right? If that were true then SA would have hosted the 2011, 2015, 2019 or 2023 World Cups. SA so powerful in fact that World Rugby's own council recommended SA as the best option to host 2023 and they still voted against us.
