From comments I understand that you should avoid any knee replacement and try any other possible way.
@KneeReplacementTherapists13 сағат бұрын
It is often recommended that knee replacement surgery be a "last resort" treatment due to the invasiveness of the procedure and risks. More conservative options such as physical therapy, exercise, activity and lifestyle modifications, and injections should be considered first. However, although some people do not have a positive outcome from surgery, most individuals do benefit greatly from knee replacement surgery in terms of decreased pain, increased mobility, increased activity tolerance and function. Hope this helps!

I would think that tourniquet they crank down on your thigh during surgery would be the biggest cause quad loss and the tight band feeling.
@KneeReplacementTherapists14 сағат бұрын
That's an interesting thought! The tourniquet can definitely cause some temporary effects like muscle tightness or discomfort, as it restricts blood flow to the area during surgery. However, the primary cause of quad muscle loss (atrophy) after surgery is more likely due to factors like muscle disuse and inflammation. The tight band feeling might also be a combination of the tourniquet's pressure and post-surgical swelling.

What if my wrists are frozen
@KneeReplacementTherapists14 сағат бұрын
If possible, scoot toward a piece of furniture such as a couch or chair. Then you should be able to get your arms up on the chair and push through your forearms and elbows rather than your wrists. If nothing is available to assist the best option is probably to get in a quadruped position on your forearms and knees, again pushing through the forearms to walk your arms up until your in a kneeling position and then kneeling on one leg, and then finally pushing up from that position.

Will there be any problem if we fall down and hurt knee after a bilateral knee surgery
@KneeReplacementTherapists14 сағат бұрын
The biggest concern after a fall is the potential for a fracture, typically of your thigh bone / femur or where the bone attaches with the prosthetic. If you are concerned about a potential fracture after falling, be sure to consult with your surgeon and they can recommend if it is appropriate to come into the office for an x-ray and further testing.

If its a bilateral knee surgery..then what happens
@KneeReplacementTherapists14 сағат бұрын
This does certainly make getting up from the floor more difficult. The best option if you can't tolerate briefly kneeling on either leg, is to rotate your body so that your hands are on the floor in front of you and your on your feet, like a bear crawl position. Then you can walk your hands back toward your feet bending at your torso at the same time until you can push yourself up into a standing position.

I had 6,5 months tkr. I am a survivor of ca Mammae for 6 years. I still can't go down from stair. The muscles around the knee feel so stiff. Is there any relation with the medications of cancer I took for 5 years ?
@KneeReplacementTherapists3 күн бұрын
First of all, congratulations on being a survivor! It's understandable that you're feeling frustrated with your recovery, especially after both knee replacement and cancer treatment. Certain cancer medications, like chemotherapy or hormone therapy, can sometimes affect muscle strength, flexibility, and joint health, potentially contributing to stiffness or slower recovery. Additionally, the body may take longer to heal after cancer treatment, as it can impact your energy levels, bone health, and overall mobility.

Then why do I have pain in our on my kneecap? Stiff sore and pain below knee joint and to the right?
@KneeReplacementTherapists3 күн бұрын
It’s possible that the pain you're feeling could be due to a variety of factors, like swelling, muscle tightness, or the adjustment of your body to the new joint. Pain below the knee joint and to the right could also be related to soft tissue irritation or the way you're moving as you recover. If this continues to be an issue be sure to consult with your physical therapist and/or surgeon.

@KneeReplacementTherapists3 күн бұрын
This can be difficult. Sometimes having the surgical knee on the bottom makes it easier to keep it straight. If you are about 2 weeks or more out from surgery and are able to achieve full knee extension (straightening) there is really less worry about bending the knee while you sleep.

Thank you! I have had a huge cramp in my calf for 5 days now after the ACL reconstruction. really annoying when walking. now 9 days into this process... do you have any tips for me for further stages?
@KneeReplacementTherapists6 күн бұрын
You're welcome! I’m sorry to hear about the calf cramp-it can be really annoying, especially early in recovery. Cramping is common after ACL reconstruction, often due to muscle weakness, dehydration, or the muscles adjusting to changes from surgery. Make sure you’re staying hydrated and try gently stretching or massaging your calf to relieve the tightness. Elevating your leg and icing it can help reduce swelling, which might also be contributing to the cramping. As you progress in PT, strengthening your muscles around the knee and calf should help prevent cramps from happening as much. You’re still early in the recovery process, so hopefully, it’ll improve as you continue healing. If it persists, definitely mention it to your PT or surgeon. Keep it up, and take things one step at a time!

I have read a lot of horror stories on the Internet, Facebook groups, etc. about 80% of those stories are from people with major difficulties and regrets. Having worse pain less mobility than before I have two bone on bone knees and I need replacements however I am going to put it off because of, these stories, I feel the people who do great other ones who are absolutely physically fit. Most Americans are not physically fit. I’m going to try and get into some pain management program to see if they can help my pain and when the right time comes I will do it, but I will say I think it is one of the most barbaric medical procedures. Especially since so many people are not happy with them. It’s absolutely disgusting especially when doctors won’t give pain management as a major part of their program. I think getting your knee sawed off and your muscles and tendons cut through requires more than seven days of painkillers.
@KneeReplacementTherapists6 күн бұрын
I totally understand your concerns, and it's completely normal to feel apprehensive given all the mixed stories out there. It's important to recognize that everyone's recovery experience is different, and the internet can often amplify the negative side, making it seem like those are the majority of cases. Yes, knee replacements can be a significant surgery with real risks, and it's absolutely valid to be cautious. You’re also right that being in good physical shape can often lead to better outcomes, but that doesn't mean people who aren’t athletes or “super fit” can’t have positive results. Many factors, including age, overall health, and adherence to physical therapy, play a role. The people who struggle more with recovery tend to be the ones who might have additional complications or who weren't as proactive about rehab. Exploring pain management is a good idea to help you navigate the years before you may need surgery. In the meantime, have you considered things like physical therapy, weight management, or alternative therapies like injections (like viscosupplementation or cortisone) that might give you some relief and help you delay surgery a bit longer? Ultimately, it's about finding what works best for you and feeling confident in your decision when the time comes. I hope you find the right path forward that balances pain relief and long-term mobility.

Thank you for your vid’s they are very informative and reassuring👍 now into day 10 first seven days had horrific pain as my leg blew up and set like concrete yet the knee felt strong, once I got the fluid drained away and my leg went down quite a bit but still not norm yet I find walking not to be a problem, it soon tells you when you need to sit down, I have found getting some sleep a critical point as whilst you lay there the pain which in me comes as that hot burning sensation at the surgical site to the electrical shocks from the nerve endings to the nagging aching pain in the groin and hip area, 😂what I would give for 3-4 hrs sleep.
@KneeReplacementTherapists6 күн бұрын
I'm so glad the videos have been helpful to you! Day 10 is still pretty early in the recovery process, so it's completely normal to experience pain, swelling, and those strange sensations. The burning sensation, electrical shocks, and aching around the groin and hip are all common post-surgery symptoms-your body is still healing and adjusting. Sleep can definitely be one of the hardest parts of recovery, and I hear you on the struggle to get those solid hours of rest. Have you tried elevating your leg with some pillows or using ice or heat before bed? That might help ease some of the discomfort. Hang in there! It sounds like you're making progress, and remember, recovery takes time! 😊

@KneeReplacementTherapists6 күн бұрын
It sounds like you're doing everything you can, and it's great that you're seeking out help to continue your recovery. Swelling and stiffness can persist for several months after surgery, especially if there's excess scar tissue involved. If you're not feeling like you're getting enough hands-on attention in PT, you might want to consider seeking out a PT who specializes in manual therapy or myofascial release, which can be really effective for breaking up scar tissue and improving mobility. Also, make sure you're doing your home exercises regularly, as they can help supplement your PT sessions and encourage better mobility over time. Glad the videos are helpful! Keep going, and I hope you feel better soon! 😊

It is normal to have some lingering tightness after surgery. It is best to continue doing at least a few minutes of range of motion exercises multiple times per week for up to a year after surgery. Long-term, staying physically active in whatever way is most enjoyable for you will over time help with joint mobility and stiffness.

Clicking can be caused by a couple different things such as the prosthetic components contacting each other, or friction from ligaments or other soft tissue moving against the new knee. Hi there! I will be 2 years post op on December 6th. I still have pain when walking and standing more than sitting. I think it’s from extra scar tissue. I had an MRI 5 months ago. I didn’t understand the terminology used by the doctor to know what’s going on. He did suggest therapy again and maybe surgery to change the prosthetic. I opted out of both because I still do my exercises taught to me by PT. I also, still use ice from time to time. I want to know your suggestion on what I may add to break up the scar tissue more so I can walk without pain. THANK YOU so much for your Expertise!!!!!!!!!
@KneeReplacementTherapists11 күн бұрын
Scar tissue can definitely be a factor in limiting mobility and causing discomfort, and while physical therapy exercises are essential for maintaining strength and flexibility, there are a few additional approaches that might help break up scar tissue and improve your mobility. First, consider gentle myofascial release or soft tissue massage. This can help target the scar tissue and break it down over time. A skilled therapist can guide you through techniques to improve tissue flexibility and release tightness around the knee. Another option is foam rolling around the surrounding muscles-especially the quads, hamstrings, and calves-since tight muscles can also contribute to pain and restriction. You can also try heat therapy before stretching or exercising to help loosen the tissue, making the stretches and exercises more effective. It’s great that you’re still committed to doing your exercises and using ice when needed, but if you're not seeing enough progress, it may be worth exploring other treatments or following up with your doctor. Hang in there, and keep up the hard work! Wishing you continued healing!

I have had my left knee replaced, 3 mos ago, but my right knee is locking and in need of surgery and I find I can't do many of the exercises due to the pain in the right knee. Any recommendations?
@KneeReplacementTherapists11 күн бұрын
I’m sorry to hear about the pain in your right knee. For now, focusing on low-impact exercises like swimming or using a stationary bike might help, as these activities strengthen muscles around the knee without adding extra strain. Water exercises are particularly good since the buoyancy reduces pressure on the joint. Seated exercises, such as leg raises, can also help maintain strength without stressing your knee. You can also try to incorporate pain management strategies for your right knee similar to the left knee such as use of pain medicine, icing, heat, compression to make certain exercises more tolerable. Hope this helps and best wishes to you!

@KneeReplacementTherapists13 күн бұрын
Unless your doctor instructs you otherwise, there should be no reason you can't have a foot massage after knee replacement surgery. If you are considering going to a nail salon for a pedicure or manicure, it is appropriate to wait a few weeks after surgery as there is a small risk of bleeding and potentially causing an infection.

Been doing this exercise but it feels like my progress plateaued so quickly with stairs. Can't help but fall forward into the next step going down stairs.
@KneeReplacementTherapists14 күн бұрын
It sounds like you’ve made some great progress since your surgery, but I totally get how frustrating it is to hit a plateau, especially with stairs. After a patella fracture, it’s common for stair climbing to still feel challenging, as it requires strength, balance, and coordination. If you’re falling forward while going down, it might be due to weakness in the quadriceps or difficulty controlling the descent. You could try adding more targeted strengthening exercises for your quads, hamstrings, and calves, as well as balance work to help with control. Sometimes it helps to focus on improving your eccentric strength (the lowering phase of movement) as that’s key for safe stair descent.

I’m sorry to hear you’re still dealing with pain. Recovery times can vary, and some people take longer to heal after a knee replacement. The pain on the outside of your knee could be related to soft tissue healing or muscle imbalances. Continuing physical therapy and strengthening exercises can help, but if the pain persists, it might be worth checking in with your surgeon to rule out any issues. Stay patient-progress can be slow, but many people see improvements even after a year or more. Hang in there!
