thank youy for such a comprehensive overview of some of the ways i can improve my walking. I am 12 days post-surgery (RTKR), and feel i am doing fairly well, but want to transition from my walker back to my cane. One issue i have is that my L knee is also awaiting TKR - and seems to be a little more prone to buckling than it was before my RTKR. Any suggestions?

This can definitely be a challenge. The best recommendation is to perform all exercises (range of motion and strengthening) on both legs. Not only will this help with walking and mobility right now but will also be good prehab for the left knee. Unfortunately, it will probably take some time to feel comfortable and stable on your feet as you have weakness and impairments on both sides. Best wishes to you in your recovery from surgery.

I didn’t get a knee replacement but I have trouble standing straight on my knees. As if I forgot how, my knees stay bent. My right knee won’t strengthen all the way as well when I walk or sit flat

Sorry to hear this... If you mainly experience while standing, it is probably a strength issue, especially of the quadriceps of your thigh.

Hey Doc , I had a TKR one month ago the surgery went well and I was doing great but unfortunately I got sick just 4 days post op! I lost 7-10 days of therapy as I was put on restrictions from my surgeon. I can't get past 92 deg. PT told me I needed an MUA and that I will need to go straight to PT right after procedure and every day for 4 more days straight My question is how effective is this going to be in correcting the stiffness? I am 59 female( I think being a girl makes it tougher for recovery) I have RA and have pushed through shoulder and spine surgery. This knee thing is awful!!

Thank you for your question. MUA is usually very helpful and effective at improving knee range of motion and helping decrease stiffness. Your PT is right in that you’ll really want to perform intensive therapy the days after the procedure to maximize the benefits and improvements seen.

So sorry to hear this. I recommend you get connected with a physiotherapist who can train you and teach you specific exercises to regain your strength and mobility.

10 wks completed I can walk without support but not straight Bit once take a painkiller such as Dynapar I can walk straight I don't understand is it because of pain or strength Should I take painkiller and walk?
@KneeReplacementTherapists6 ай бұрын
If you notice improvements after taking your pain medicine, then the walking issues are probably, at least in part, related to pain. Commonly pain and weakness both impact walking and mobility after surgery... I unfortunately can't provide specific advice about what and when to take pain medicine. Thank you for watching and your question.

Thank you Doctor for your useful info. I had my TKR 10 days ago and found my leg very stiff and had problems with walking. Will do the exercises you recommend apart from the exercises given by my physiotherapist

I am having both knees done in about a month…How soon can I start all these Excercises?
@KneeReplacementTherapists8 ай бұрын
Typically these exercises can start as soon as you feel safe enough and stable enough to perform and tolerate them. Typically the first 1-2 weeks more of the exercises are focused on getting range of motion and early strength, but as soon as possible I like to have patients up and doing standing and weight bearing exercises.

I recently had knee replacement surgery and now use a cane. For the most part I do well walking except for stepping up to a curb. I found myself in this situation. Fortunately, some kind person helped me. This wasn't covered in physical therapy and I think it should be included. Could you please help with this problem. Thanks

Here is an old video explaining how to do stairs after surgery, it is the same advice for going up/down a single step or curb: studio.kzbin.infoUhB5aDhGn5c/edit and I also just recently made a video about doing stairs / steps with a cane that should be released by the end of the year. Main points: going up lead with the non-surgical leg and going down lead with the surgical leg "up with the good and down with the bad" The cane is in the opposite had of the surgical leg and where the surgical leg is the cane stays with it... For example stepping up step with non surgical leg first and then come up with the cane and non-surgical leg together.
