I would keep an eye on Ainsley Melham. Having seen him in a few musicals in Australia, he always delivers.

I saw Maybe Happy Ending - loved, loved loved it and Darren Criss deserves a nomination. Already have tickets for Penzance in April. Can't wait. Love Ramin. Just missed Operation MIncemeat in London in Sept. Will see it in April, too.
@jameshicks643519 сағат бұрын
Right now, I think Francis and Criss are frontrunners for nominations, just because their shows are running and received good-to-great reviews. Even if Maybe Happy Ending closes before nominations, they'll be recognized. It's by far the most highly rated show of the season thus far. I agree that Groff will probably get nominated, mainly because of his pedigree (though the vocals that have been released don't sound anything like Bobby Darin's sound or style). I'm highly suspicious of the Penzance "reimagining" and don't expect it to do well critically or commercially, so I don't think either Karimloo or Hyde-Pierce will be nominated. That leaves Jordan, Durand and Cumming vying for the last two spots. Igelhart actually has received VERY good reviews for his performance, so he could sneak in if Groff, Jordan, Durand or Cumming don't live up to expectations.

Couldn't get passed all the "innovation" shticks and gimmicks from Sunset. It was like watching a high school performance with more money and a better production. Pair that with the kabuki performances.... at times it felt like a series of rehearsals in a dance studio. IMHO

Great list, Floyd fan here - there’s a lot of love for the show in the industry, and as long as they don’t f*+=* up the production - which I don’t expect - i predict they’re going to give the show as many noms as possible. With Jordan getting passed on last year for a stellar performance, I can see them giving him the nomination at the least and I can also see, if he gives it 200% - which considering his work ethic and typical dedication - running away with the award. I can see Sunset getting the best actress and best revival, so they might want to divy up the love and give best actor to Floyd. I definitely think Darren is nominated, but for a win it’s a little bit of a quiet performance though excellent, Tom is great but the reviews bias mostly critical of the show, a la Cabaret, might mean a non-sweep, so a Tom win not guaranteed. With Jonathan just winning I don’t think it’s a guarantee win this year unless he blows our minds in that performance. The rest we’ll have to see when they open - love the coverage, this is exciting, can’t wait for more!❤🎉

Couldn’t agree more…having seen the original 4 times with 4 different Normas (Close, Buckley, Mason & Paige) I was unprepared for how much this production broke my brain. Not sure what I could say about Nicole that hasn’t been said already…but it’s an other-worldly performance, fully committed & absolutely mesmerizing.

I always enjoy your content & this was a fun & interesting watch…I agree with the previous commenter in that I found “The Notebook” to be a tough sit & mediocre at best. But I too was totally taken with “Sunset” & “Death”…& here’s a hot take for you…I saw 40+ shows in 2024 & the show I had the overall best time at was…”The Heart of Rock & Roll”. Full stop. For realz. I’ll defend that show forever…what a little gem.

Loved the list. Hope you do them for the potential supporting noms. I agree with your two locks but I'd have to put Darren Cris as a lock. With the block of tickets released, it's clear producers are gonna do their darnest to keep the show open til Tony noms come out and as long as that happens I'd argue Cris is win competitive. That show is guaranteed at least 6 tony noms at this point.

Your reviews, to me, are almost always spot-on, so I am surprised at how differently we rate the 2024 productions. In particular, I thought The Notebook was incredibly mediocre in every aspect (I've never read the book or seen the movie -- I don't know if that had anything to do with it). The story didn't move me at all, even though both of my parents suffered from dementia. I thought the ending, in particular, was absurd. I'm also curious as to why Illinoise and Ragtime didn't rate even higher on your scale, given how much you seemed to connect with both. They were two of the best things I saw in 2024.
@TemiMReacts7 күн бұрын
I felt similarly. While there were aspects of the story that were emotionally resonant, overall I felt like the music and production were very meh. The next day, I couldn't even recall a single song.

Another spot-on review. I saw this at City Center and thought it was fine as light entertainment and a perfect vehicle for Encores. But I was somewhat surprised at the raves it received, mainly because the play itself is so dated and probably was never all that great to begin with (let's face it, none of the music is all that great). Having said that, I thought it was smart to transfer to Broadway in the summer -- when no other new musicals were playing (as you mention). It was also smart to make it a limited run, as I don't think it can compete with the other new productions that are premiering in the fall. Because I saw it at City Center, I forgave it some of the staging issues you mention, though I can see how the stakes are raised once it's on Broadway. As for the message of the show, I'm not sure there ever was one -- that's a big factor in the play feeling so dated, and it didn't feel like they did anything to update it (again, probably because it originated at City Center).
@broadwaybestfriendКүн бұрын
Good point about the lack of a message being why it feels dated

Great review. I've been trying to see this, but tickets are getting hard to come by. So far, it's doing well financially, so I imagine it will definitely still be playing when the Tony nominations come out. Based on reactions thus far, I'd be surprised if it doesn't do well.

Audra will win big time! First of all, her performance is phenomenal! And she plays 8 times a week! Nicole plays only 7 perfs a week, why can't she play 8? All the other women who starred in Gypsy in previous productions played 8 times a week! Also, her political drama will hurt her most definitely. She does not understand how the theatrical community feels about Mr. Trump. When you are a public figure, you need to watch very carefully what you do and what you say. Mr. Trump is no friend to the Broadway community! Her performance in SUNSET is wonderful, but in my humble opinion, Audra is more than phenomenal!
@aurelienelizabeth470920 сағат бұрын
Maybe beacause Nicole belts her lungs off, something Audra can't do. She is not a consistent belter. And Nicole dances much more than Audra in SB, she even belts doing the split. And by the Audra, barelt began that she cancelled several performances because of a cold, while Nicole sang perfectly the phantom of opera operatics with a cold years ago

It is absolutely ridiculous that some precious and entitled people think Nicole doesn't deserve a Tony Award because of who she did or didn't vote for. She apologised and stated she did not vote the way people are assuming, not that it should matter. She didn't kill anyone's mother. The awards should be based on talent alone. The performer's personal lives should not come in to it at all. Sidenote - Both choices in the election were not great. It was like choosing between two buckets of shit, but endorsing a genocide using billions of US taxpayer's dollars played a bit part against the Democrats.
@melbamaloney457223 күн бұрын
Nicole’s transcendent performance should win the Tonys unless this prestigious award is political too which is sad and unfortunate because every performer should be vetted now to find out evidence where their political leanings are ! Perhaps the Tonys should be called the Dems’ Tonys and only performers with left leanings should win ? She didn’t even endorse anyone !Even the name Broadway connotes a broader audience perhaps it should be named Blueway instead of Broadway and I thought the stage should be a safe space for every performer regardless of race, gender , religion or politics . Am rooting for Nicole to win despite what everyone may think ! It is unfortunate too that this commentary had to change her mind because of baseless politic perceptions !

I saw both Gypsy (first preview) and Sunaet Boulevard last week. I came to specifically to see Audra in Gypsy because she is my favorite Broadway singer of all time. Sunset Boulevard was just an add on for me. I can say hands down, Nicole Scherzinger gives one of the greatest Broadway performances of the 21st century! I saw Patti Lupone in Gyosy 2008 and Lea Michele in Funny Girl (twice). Nicole is at that level of absolute BRILLIANCE! I have seen some intense shows in my life but this revival of Sunset Boulevard is probably the greatest Broadway show I have seen since Gypsy in 2008. Audra is great and her performance is certainly unique. However, the show felt like it had no reason to exist. There was ZERO imagination to the direction, stage design, costumes, choreography. The whole thing felt recycled and under rehearsed. Audra rarely lit up the stage. Her strong mix voice simply does not work for this music. If Nicole doesn't win, the Tony's sre a complete jole. This is the performance of a LIFETIME!
@melbamaloney457223 күн бұрын
I totally agree with you Nicole should be the winner she gives her best every night totally mind blowing and hopefully the Tonys will not tarnish their reputation by kowtowing to political mob mentality !

So glad I am not alone in being underwhelmed by Audra in Gypsy. Is she an icon? Absolutely, but it is not the best role for her. That said, Nicole owns Norma Desmond and blows the roof off the St. James. Admittedly, I saw Gypsy in early previews, but it would have to be a significantly different performance for me to change my mind. I looked at my watch often.

I cannot believe how many people in this comment section adored Sunset. I thought it was the most disappointing, and almost the WORST production (the book & score are imo brilliant) i have ever seen in my life, even if the intentions were in a really good place. Im rooting for Audra, but expecting a shock this year. Jasmine Amy Rogers maybe?

I saw sunset a few weeks ago and it was the greatest theater performance I’ve ever seen. She somehow manages to find the balance between broadway diva and scream queen. The fact that she might not win due to a misunderstanding is why we are stuck with trump. People were tired of being dragged for nonsense. Everyone knows she’s a super Christian who supports the gays, no different from Dolly Parton or Kristen chenowith.
@yoyodre21 күн бұрын
We are stuck with Trump because for many people being a rapis t white supremacis t is not a deal breaker, not because some people get criticized for their actions.
@KaiOpaka19 күн бұрын
There wasn't a misunderstanding. She liked a pro-Trump (as in can't wait for him to be elected) RFK Jr. post and she's anti-choice. Brand is a garbage person who's found refuge with RWers. At no point did she say she didn't vote for Trump or that she supported Kamala. (I'm skeptical about her support her vaccines if she's following RFK Jr but I'll wait for more definitive info. Not holding my breath on hearing support for trans people.) This is who she is. You don't get to ask for an award from an inclusive community while supporting people who seek to harm that community. The nerve. PS. Kristin and Dolly are pro-LGBTQ+ and Dolly is famously out there being vocally pro-trans, anti-racist and pro-vaccine (not that Kristin isn't, just saying what we know). Christian =/= MAGA or conservative so no, this is not about being devout.
