I've been messing with this for a half hour and FreeCAD keeps throwing errors. I cannot reference a shape binder in a new sketch. No idea what I'm doing wrong. 12:18:11 <Sketch> SketchObject.cpp(9051): Failed to project external geometry in Pipe_Clamp_35mm_Take_4#Sketch003: ShapeBinder.Face1 Selected external reference plane must be normal to sketch plane 12:18:11 pyException: Traceback (most recent call last): File "<string>", line 1, in <module> <class 'ValueError'>: Not able to add external shape element Face1 12:18:11 Pipe Clamp 35mm Take 4#Sketch003: App.getDocument('Pipe_Clamp_35mm_Take_4').getObject('Sketch003').addExternal("ShapeBinder","Face1") 12:18:11 Pipe Clamp 35mm Take 4#Sketch003: Failed to add external geometry

For some reason, In 1.0 only the subshape binder is in the toolbar. The shape binder is in the Part Design menu.

Is there away to add a rotation to the sketch so that it twists while it rotates around the axis?

One thing to note. I've downloaded Gridfinity bins from many sources and imported them into FreeCAD 0.21.0 and the dev versions and once they are in FreeCAD, performing a sketch for example, takes about 12 seconds per line and it's damn slow. Not sure why tho.

So idk what I'm doing wrong here but I keep getting a box in the middle of the rotor when I try to insert the 135 mm pocket into the rear face of the rotor. It doesn't even go as deep to see the cooling fins. Any suggestions? Update: NVM Fixed by going 1mm smaller than 135 and it fixed the issue. I think it is perhaps due to my cooling ducts being on the 135mm construction circle at full length and getting cut through with the pocket i was trying to install.

Hi Andrew, I see you've stopped doing the tutorials now. I've moved on from Freecad to Alibre Cad but needed to come back and refresh my memory as I needed to make a solid from an STL and can't do it in Alibre. Thanks again. Such a shame you've stopped as you're such a good and clear instructor. Jim 👍

How do you setup the sketches to be in the right positions for the path? All tutorials I've seen (including the official one) either have the sketches all start at the origin(including the pipe path itself) or they just start off with the sketeches in the correct positions, but none seem to show how you actually start with two independent sketches that you then align to make the pipe

steps: 1. select model, select "Part" in the top menu, select "create shape from mesh.." in a dropdown 2. click on a new piece of geometry select "Part" in the top menu, select "Convert to solid" hide previous items 3. click on a new piece of geometry select "Part" in the top menu, select "Create a copy" select "Refine shape" 4. click on a new piece of geometry select "create a new body and make it active" in the top long menu 5. export file as step or else

In the example you gave with the three rectangles, most FREECAD experts will say NOT to use datum planes. All you need to do is create a new sketch on the origin and offset the placement by the same method using the formulae you used. Datum planes should really be used for angled sketches.

Software app rule: "The higher the tolerance - the less time will be taken." Are you not aware that 0.5 is HIGHER than 0.1? That half is MORE than a tenth? That half is HIGHER than a tenth? 'Tolerance', is your tolerance of inaccuracy. The higher it is - the more 'tolerant' you are. (It's an engineering term - and without engineering - you can't be a engineering designer). Methinks that this is even worse: a poor fundamental understanding of maths (probably because younger people are never exposed to fractions - an obviously too difficult concept to teach kids now, because it was obviously too complex for you to learn). Current Socialist foundational education is dumbing down our kids quicker than 'war-mongering' Capitalism ever did. Some kids will watch this video, and this ignorance will throw their learning minds into confusion (even though they had it right first time - without you stating falsehoods). Andrew - it might be an idea to add a comment - pinned? Your in-video commentary highlights your engineering / mathematical ignorance. You need to beg pardon for it. ;-)

Question, there is a part i would like to model, and its the foot to the mpcnc machine. A gentleman using the Ls3 fork of freecad modeled the curved foot by offsetting copies of the same sketch at different sizes, then lofted. I would like to see it done using the pipe method. Thanks

Do this, do that..... But what shape binder IS? You need your $30 for YT so badly, pushing out semi-useless content.
@leaks19656 ай бұрын
Finally the docs solved my problem: The PartDesign ShapeBinder tool creates a shape binder referencing geometry from a single parent object. A ShapeBinder is used inside a PartDesign Body to reference geometry outside the Body. Using external geometry directly in a Body is not allowed and will lead to out of scope errors. A ShapeBinder will track the relative placement of the referenced geometry, which is useful in the context of creating assemblies, if its DataTrace Support property is set to true. See the Example below to understand how this works. The problem was the shape binder offset never worked. I created from sketch, not from an actual face. Well... It makes sense now.

I really struggled with a double loft ruled profile. Basically a piped profile with a shape as the profile crossed inner and outer walls at certain sections. I spent days trying to rectify it. In the end it appears Freecad joins profiles in the order you create them and not whether they are both inner or outer walls. Hope this helps someone.
