Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Plus Garden Answer plans to add lots of compost around their growing area so they are taking that into consideration in deciding what depth they will plant at. But a little bit higher is better than lower.

And keep any mulch back from the root flare. If you see a tree where the bark is separating at the bottom from the tree it’s usually because of too much moisture, bugs or disease from mulch up on the base.

Two cabins plus a new build in Mexico, looking forward to more build videos. Just a tip about the wood stepping stones, you want to dig them in so that the top of the board is level with the soil, that way when you cut the grass you can just mow straight over the top of them.

Just wanted to give some advice on the sumac trees. When you plant sumac trees it is best to dig your hole then put a big plastic barrier inside the hole to force the roots to grow down. If there is no barrier the roots can go out 30 feet and off each root you will have dozens of new sumacs. It is this really hard to control the sumacs. As an example when planting bamboo a barrier is installed to control its growth. Please reach out to me if you have any questions. On the property we have now cut down the sumacs that were huge as every summer I would pull out at least 20+ shoots. Even now the stumps and roots are producing growth. It sounds like your sumacs are still small so I would definitely replant them. I would actually consider them as an invasive species.

Also a Nova Scotia resident, if you love sitting outdoors, I know how important it is to have a gazebo with the insect netting to keep out all the bugs … mosquitoes, black flies and the June bugs (especially) at night.

Congrats! My wife and I bought bare land in Loreto, Mexico and built our garage house and the first phase of our boutique resort Pufferfish Villas. We did much of the work ourselves and documented everything on our KZbin channel. It is very different from building up North, and you need to keep an eye on things to make sure they are built correctly (ie your toilets won't clog when you flush) but it's not that hard. We just wrapped up our first high season at the resort and it we couldn't be happier with our decision. We live here full time so let us know if you have any questions or need help with something. When planting trees one needs to take in to count the roots even though the tap root goes straight down but the rising roots or otherwise known as the feeder Roots will spread out from trees. So when planting tree one needs to take into count water lines and underground electrical lines. And sewer lines. Because the rising roots or feeder Roots can find their way into water lines electrical lines and sewer lines. And calls a lot of damage in a lot of problems.

I had a soft roof gazebo for a few years, but the fabric is so susceptible to UV damage, they really don't last. Bit the bullet and bought a solid metal-roofed one this year. Building it was 20x harder than the soft one, but so worth it in the end.

Ooh Jazz, the black flies are really bad! (As if you didn’t know!😆) One thing I’ve noticed about trees is that it usually takes about 3-4 years for them to get truly established and grow. Then, it seems like they just blow up and grow crazy fast. Magnolia trees grow really well here in southern Texas and I’m surprised that y’all can grow them there! Learn something new everyday! 😊 Congratulations on your new property! Will y’all be starting construction anytime soon? Looking forward to seeing what y’all pick out for the property and all of the craziness along the way! ❤

The views and hills while driving are identical to Almeria Spain. Im from UK and bought a detatched property in Spain. Going back to look for a large plot of land to build a second property one day. Can see how beautiful mexico is and wanting land there.
