Remember to do a fix on the aspect ratio on these, they are not wide screen movies.
@the8mmrailyard-vd6jdАй бұрын
You’re seeing it in wide screen because when I scanned it I scanned the entirety of the film, you’re seeing sections that the projector would normally crop out. That’s why you can see the sprocket holes. A lot of older cameras back in the day would actually shoot in a wider aspect ratio.
@tableseven8133Ай бұрын
@@the8mmrailyard-vd6jd Hum, see time stamp 6:16. I do believe you are fully correct in correcting me. I never knew this could be done with a older film, wow! The time line is a round train signal and it is almost round like it should be, just slightly oval from side to side but the angle of the video might be why it looks that way. These kind of this can be used for a proof of a correct aspect ratio. So I was wrong in my assessment.

From :00 to :40 looks to be a UP coal train somewhere in Utah County. :40 to 5:43 are scenes from Thistle 5:44 to 7:01 are loaded tramway cars being dumped into the loading tipple at Castle Gate. The RG mainline runs right under the tipple at the bottom out of frame. 7:02 to 7:30 looks to be of an EB manifest between Detour and Tie Fork. 7:31 to 7:49 is the UP coal train from earlier passing under I-15. 7:50 to 8:14 is just up the road at Hardy along the old UP Provo Sub. I'm not sure the location of the last scene, I was -27 years old, so I'm not too familiar where this underpass would be.

Thanks but i don’t understand why there are sprocket holes visible on the left side of the video. I believe 8mm was a 4x3 format not 16x9?
@the8mmrailyard-vd6jd2 ай бұрын
What you’re seeing is the entire film strip exposed, most cameras pre-1960 did this. The projector would crop this out giving you the 4x3 format. Modern scanners like the ones I use are capable of scanning the entire film strip if there is footage present.

There must be several short movies compiled on this video. As the progression of time of seasons and later vintage machines are shown. The 55 combine was a real early one as it has the hand powered long lever for the ground speed control, later versions had a hydraulic control with a short lever, I had both versions of them, they were very good machines for the time. Also notice the corn, the stalks are about 15 inches between them in the row, maybe 12000 plants per acre population? Today it's common to have 30000 ppa, but we use a good bit of fertilizer. Also what are they loading into the spreader? Almost looks like loose dirt? Not like any manure I've ever loaded! Also trying to figure out why the people at the farm demonstration are doing walking through the tall grass? A real interesting study.

I liked that you included the winter films, but it also made me sad - two of my classmates were killed by sledding downhill into a trolley crossing (two separate instances) My grandfather collected fares when the passengers boarded in the middle of the car and the conductor and driver were two different people. And I was a trolley crossing guard on the Media line (School Road / Garrett Road) in my own time. Loved old No. 81 & No. 73 especially. Beautiful trolleys.

OMG... Thanks so much for posting these memories. Wow...Train 17 in the morning! Locomotive 3030 was a regular visitor to Littleton, NC, back then. One evening, many moons ago, we "raced" (paced) it and Train 18 along curvy Highway 158 West after it had pulled out of Littleton, Mars light and all. We had to let it go a mile and a half out of town. The highway speed limit, back in those days, was 60. 18 was already exceeding that and still accelerating.
