Doesn't all of this skew the data greatly that in turn makes Everbees data on sales and good possible products way off especially if looking at products and shops all started or listed over the last 48 months?

The vast majority of items listed and being sold on Etsy are mass-produced, factory-made Chinese substrates (mugs, glasses, clothing, tile, wind chimes). This absolute junk is cheap and meets the price point where sales are happening today after years of inflation has left Americans with little money for discretionary spending on gifts and such. Because the Etsy algorithm favors this junk that is selling, unique handmade items will not even be shown and shoppers will have a hard time finding them. It is a global race to the “bottom price” death spiral 🌀 and it is too late to exit the ride.

It’s interesting you mention the pandemic. I think all these new Etsy sellers some 2 million is a byproduct left over from pandemic caffeine buzz. What I mean by that is Etsy guru are telling people pandemic level sales and bunch of people rush to Etsy to find out it’s not that way anymore. I think when bunch of them quit and now the election is over plus new $15 fee to weed out bad actors or people not serious. It will equalize over time and only the serious people will do well without all the extra sellers.

I’ve been selling on Etsy continuously since 2008 and I feel that this is all a natural part of the ebb and flow of the platform. Remember, they’re always testing something and no two shops are the same. “Gift Mode” might bee the new “Etsy Studio”. Etsy Studio, created in 2017, was a new market dedicated to just craft supplies. As a supply seller this should have been great news. It flopped. I got maybe four sales through this new “market” but hundreds through regular Etsy. I think, like all of us, Etsy is just throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks…again.

Started my shop in 2020. I make jewelry. Lots of competition. It's not what I want it to be but I was still getting a lot of views and have a lot of repeat customers then it tanked overnight in October. I already had a certain collection on ebay where I always get seen so I am slowly cross listing on ebay for the rest of my pieces. For example one of my pearl bracelets got seen one time in 30 days on etsy. Same bracelet on ebay was seen 16 times in way less than 30 days. I have to be seen to sell. No views means zero chance of a sale. I was very happy with etsy but they have forced me to list my items elsewhere!

Here’s something you might want to try. I sell beads and jewelry supplies and I’ve had to resort to adding “not plastic” in my title where it can be seen. So basically something like “6mm White Glass (NOT Plastic!) White Pearl Beads”. It’s inelegant but seems to work. I got duped. I bought red “glass” pearl beads from Amazon and they sure felt light for the quantity. Yup. They were plastic. I think there’s a trust issue now with customers not getting what they expected and as you probably know they don’t always reads the description.

I always thought that ebay was the place to buy mostly cheap books and electronics. Is that not the case anymore?
@RachellesCrafts4 сағат бұрын
@ I stopped selling my handmade lampwork beads on eBay in 2009-ish when I started moving everything over to Etsy. It didn’t seem to be the right “fit” for eBay. Also, the cost of selling on eBay was much higher than on Etsy at the time. There are still handmade sellers on eBay but it isn’t the first place I’d look for handmade. Many people probably feel the same. That being said, if the fees are affordable on eBay it’s just another avenue for selling but maybe to a different audience.

I don't think it's talked about enough that business is all about adapting to change. Pandemic or not. Just because you have been on a platform for years doesn't mean your sales should be what they were. Or you are somehow deserving of growth. Have you changed and adapted with the platform you are on. Also on the other side Etsy's site layout looks like a beginner highschool web design class went wild.

Long rant...I think there are several things going on at the same time. Etsy's sales have been a bell-curve, where the C-19 was the peak. The economy has been suffering with interest rates, inflation, home prices, energy, etc... The stock market is being held together by the 'Magnificent Seven'. All it takes is for semi-conductors to become a problem and the market will crash. Global Markets are suffering (Germany, Japan etc). Etsy allowed a lot of mass resellers of physical products to join during C-19. They ignored it because of the income they were making. These resellers are able to copy designs, mass produce, offer cheaper prices, and quick shipping. They offer everything Etsy wants their Handmade businesses to be. To their credit I have noticed they shutdown some of these companies in the Jewelry category. Just look for Sterling Silver rings selling for $10-$20 with thousands of listings. A quick Google image search will show you who the distributors are (Sidney Imports, The Welman Group). But I still see these same rings being sold by other shops that only have 1,000 to 10,000 sales. I spend an hour every week reporting listings and shops with links to the distributor. I still see these listings up and active, even with stock photos! After all this time, Etsy has trained customers to expect $10-$20 silver rings that ship the same or next day with free shipping, free returns, favorite discounts and cart discounts, etc... It hurts the shops that make unique, actually handmade, rings that cost $50 or more and take time to make. As far as gift mode, Etsy would be smart to let shoppers create their own "wish list" where friends and family can view your list. Amazon has this feature and I think all you need is their email address and a public list. Shoppers can make a "registry" that helps others pick the perfect gift that someone actually wants.

I own a brick and mortar for 3 decades now and also sell on Etsy. We make our own products. I bought a few items from temu to compare to our products and test if any of our customers wil pick it up at the prices they are sold on temu (did the same when Amazon came around). Our customers will look at it but won't buy it. They are still here after a few months. So I won't worry about Temu that much.

I guess mentioning that Etsy takes 60% of a sellers sale on top of all the fees. Where do I get 60%? I sold one item for $1.00 and only received .40 cents thus they kept 60%. On top of the idea the Etsy isn’t just a handmade items for sale. The platform allows handmade products to be stolen and then made by an another for cheaper and can mass produce. Furthermore, there is no customer service to speak to and they can close your shop on a whim and not even have anyone available to discuss why. I’ll buy off Etsy but selling hand crafted items is a big NO go; it simply not worth it for hand crafters on the most part but it is great for digital and companies who mass produce (if the company didn’t steal a hand crafters work).

@jessicakinnaman30823 сағат бұрын
@ from what I heard this happened because back way when, sellers would list their items at low prices but charge a large shipping fee to avoid paying listing fees. It was that dishonesty that ended up ruining for the bunch. However, I do agree they should allowed to charge fees on shipping. Instead they should only do that to sellers they catch doing that but apparently that’s too much work for them to monitor because it would require ppl to monitor that issue but no they rather not hire people at all and just punish everyone.

Been an Etsy seller for 12 years over 43k sales this is the worst October and November I have had I do not even count pandamedic times because that was a whole other thing. As an Etsy buyer though I find all the pop ups that appear on their website very spammy and off putting. I put some things in my basket the other the day and the basket was then stuck over part of my screen whilst I was trying to browse it annoyed me to the point I deleted the item from my basket in the end just so I could see my whole screen. I can't be the only buyer who is irritated by this layout. To me it makes it look like a less professional platform than it once was and maybe a bit less trustworthy . Some buyers also don't realise it is Etsy doing that and not you the seller.

Hi! I have been considering switching to Shopify as well. As an experienced seller what do you suggest for print on demand apparel sellers with a shop of around 600 listings? Are you focusing on more broad variety listings like on Etsy or do you suggest a brand like "limited catalog" approach. Would love some pro tips 😅
@thebikeracer4 сағат бұрын
I've gotten nailed on Etsy. I just had a great sale today - first big one. Customer used a 10% coupon and when I factored my Etsy Fees in, Profit dropped from $60+ to $23+. Definitely a learning experience on how discounts/fees can destroy your profit margin. Etsy will be used for branding....but focused on Shopify store from now on.

Etsy is still a great platform. Agree with you 100%. Etsy has made great strides in 2024 moving back to its roots and positioning itself for the future. They are on track in defining themselves for customers, but need to consistently execute. Sellers need to adapt to Etsy's model and business objectives. Sellers need to continually innovate and play within Etsy's rules. If Sellers choose to do things the way they always have, they will be left behind. Thanks for sharing your ideas and opinions.

The biggest difference between Etsy and both Amazon & TEMU , is they both have Free Shipping. TEMU requires a minimum $ purchase, Amazon has a “membership” fee.. In the customer’s mind, those fees are “pay for themselves” (worth it) because you are buying multiple items that individually shipping would cost so much more. In contrast, usually the Biggest cost of buying from Etsy, is the outrageous shipping costs that sellers are allowed to charge, even for the smallest items. (Ex: I bought a sticker, a very lightweight item, and was charged $10 shipping, and it was very slow shipping, not anything special, way more than the cost of the sticker, which was also extremely overpriced). Shipping costs & “overpricing” items identical to the same lower cost item on TEMU (or Ali Express), drives customers Away.. can’t tell you how many women I know, that say ‘Etsy is too “Rich” (expensive) for me’ to shop there. Changing their customer Shipping costs is THE way to compete.
@cancergirlval185912 сағат бұрын
I will also say Amazon forces sellers to a certain price point.. Etsy lets sellers charge whatever they want.. which “if” it is a truly handmade item, is fine. But if it is something they are just reselling, like they bought it in bulk from someplace (like TEMU) and are just reselling it, much of the time they are taking something bought for a dollar-something, buying out the entire TEMU stock of an item .. then reselling it on Etsy for $10-$20 something each, knowing people can’t get it anymore from TEMU, because they bought out the stock & are now the only suppliers that offer that item.
