My La Sportiva TX4 boots have done really well over the last 2.5 years but now I want to test a new pair of scrambling/approach shoes or boots.
I tried Salewa Wildfire 2s but they're a bit narrow for me.
If you have any suggestions let me know in the comments.
I'm looking for:
~Dedicated scrambling/approach footwear
~Goretex or non-Goretex
~Sticky on rock, inc in the wet
~Not too rigid
~Suitable for grade 1-3 scrambles in the UK
If you're new to scrambling, I recommend La Sportiva TX4 for your first pair of footwear, they're really sticky, flexible and long-lasting.

Worthy mention - Aku Rock DFS. I am alternating between these and my tx4's and leaning more towards them as things get wetter in my usual haunt of the dark peak. Good braking heel and grip on wet grass and the choss and feel markedly better at edging though not as good at smearing as the tx's. It's all compromises I guess and pick what works best for you and where you climb.

I slightly prefer the Scarpa Mescalito Mid GTX (not the TRK version which doesnt use Megagrip) to La Sportiva Tx4 GTX. They are slightly more technical and climb better while still fitting wide feet (like mine) very well. The only downside is that they don't have as much of a heel brake as the tx4 do, so they are better in climbing/scrambling but slightly worse for hiking / descending mud, wet grass or fine scree. The best scrambling shoe I have ever worn (by quite a margin) is (perhaps surprisingly) the Adidas Scope GTX, which had a Five Ten Stealth sole (which is quite a bit stickier than Vibram Megagrip) and a sole profile that made it suitable for both hiking and climbing, accompanied by a quite technical but still comfortable fit. Honestly, when sized snug, they almost felt as precise as real climbing shoes and they would stick to anything. Unfortunately, they are no longer made and my pair is about worn out. It seems that Adidas unfortunately almost makes no stealth soled shoes anymore (they use Continental rubber now), but I have just ordered a pair of Terrex Skychaser Tech boots, which do use stealth and look a bit like a (perhaps slightly less technical) spiritual successor to the earlier Scope GTX. I have high hopes for these but have yet to take them outside. Aside from these Adidas, which are perhaps even better, the Scarpa Mescalito Mid GTX is my favorite.

Need to give the Sportiva TX4 GTX a whirl, can’t say I’ve ever read a negative review, and there’s some good deals out there for them too.

I've worn loads of shoes/boots over the years and they're by far the grippiest I've experienced.

Discontinued five-ten guide tennie mid boots were excellent on rock at least as good as the tx4's. Comically lethal on steep wet grass however! 😂

I've got narrow feet and have found the tx guides to work much better for me than the Tx4's. They're slightly stiffer so better for small edges and the lower profile/pointer toe means they feel a lot more precise. Closer to a climbing shoe imo and they feel great on more technical stuff.

TX4 GTX, hands down the best approach shoe I’ve had. When these wear out I will get another pair, and another, and another unless they change how they make them and the quality drops. If I’m sticking to simple grade 1 routes I might take my Inov 8 trail shoes instead for lightness, but when I need a rigid sole to get a toe in the TX4s are unmatched in my opinion.

INOV-8 Roclite G 345, amazing grip on dry rock, I rarely scramble in the wet so cant comment on performance on wet rock.

I swear by my Scarpa Mescalito boots. I previously wore Mammut Redburn Pro shoes but found them uncomfortable on longer walk ins.

I have the Mescalito TRK boots; quite firm underfoot compared to what I'm used to, good for walking in mud/wet conditions. I've never tried the regular Mescalito.

Has anyone had experience with Asolo boots? I’m looking at the Eldo range, they look great and a decent price range, vibram mega grip, “climbing zone” and gore tex. almost seems too good to be true, is there a catch lol

I found Salewa quite heavy and not so grippy in the wet. I'm currently using La Sportiva TX Guide which are REALLY grippy, especially so in the wet with Vibram MegaGrip

Have you tried the new Arcteryx vertex alpine which has vibram climbing rubber rather than vibram megagrip?
@largeformatlandscape
@largeformatlandscape 4 ай бұрын
Vibram XS Flash is a funny choice, it's not a performance climbing rubber (intended for rental shoes) and not optimised for the outside I don't think. However, Arcteryx must know what they're doing, it should be good in the dry, not sure about the wet..
