In Canada if you sue a contractor and win a judgement there is no enforcement of the judgement. If a contactor goes bankrupt, they change company name and carry on as usual.

Just out of curiosity... if anyone could answer this, it would be awesome... Why would you cut up a second structural beam that was $1000... Whether you or the client paid for. To use it as a support when you could take a trip to just about any wood or home improvement store and get a 4x4 or 6x6, for probably $50 or less.

Inspector- I'm not sure you want to go down this rabbit hole. If this cop and the chief know this guy, they can certainly make life miserable for you, even if you are right - especially since you live a few hours away. They can say " let the judge decide " which will set up a court appearance and that can be postponed to further yank your chain. Look what they did to former president Trump in NY over supposedly inflating the value of his real estate where everyone admitted nobody was really hurt. Still, Trump had to spend millions for lawyers and sit in court for weeks. My point is I don't think it's worth getting into an adversarial position with the police for something as relatively minor as just showing him who you are. Plus it would have showed him you had a valid NY drivers license. I hope this all gets settled without you having to get a lawyer involved or wasting hours traveling back and forth to court.

Preston, let me first say I love your videos and have supported you in the past, and support you in trying to expose this contractor. However, I have a couple concerns here with your interaction with that police officer. First, I don’t think you had any right to expect him to fist bump you back. If I called the cops on someone, and the officer came out and fist bumped that person within a minute of talking to them to get their side, I would be pissed. The police officer, imho, should not give any appearance of taking sides. Second, when he first asked for your ID, I did not see anything aggressive or disrespectful. I watched it a couple times, and I just don’t see it. Third, from a tactical point of view I wouldn’t have made an issue about giving him your ID. You may be right about what he legally can ask for (I’m no lawyer, and I really don’t know), but that is probably a fairly sure way to annoy the guy you want on your side. Similarly, thanking him for being professional up front, in the way you did, similarly could be a tactical mistake, because it suggests a certain likelihood that other officers would not do the same. True or not, this could put him on edge. Again, not saying you are wrong here, but not the best way to get him on your side. I really think that interaction could have gone much better for you.

I have to say- a very common sense reply. I believe inspector Preston had nothing to lose by providing his ID - in fact by showing the cop his NY license and active registration he would have avoided all the BS he is going to have to deal with. All in order to prove a point. Preston might be right but I can guarantee this cop is going to go out of his way to make life difficult for him. In my opinion, just not worth all the hassle.

Good comment and I appreciate you posting it. 1. I didn't expect him to fist-bump me. But it's definitely a way to see how friendly they're going to be. 2. I honestly would have zero issue providing my ID had he NOT tried to force me to under threat of arrest. If he had just said "No, you're not required to ID, but I'd appreciate it if you would", I would have given it to him no problem. The minute he tried to do it under color of law and say that I'm REQUIRED to ID, that's when I dug my heels in. I will never allow a cop to force me to do anything I'm not required to do. 3. The State Troopers, if they had simply asked me, I would have given them my ID. Why? Because they were being cordial in what was a "consensual encounter". I was not detained. I was not under arrest. I could have walked or driven away at any time. I was not required to be there at all. 4. I agree that he wasn't rude about asking. He was rude for implying I was legally REQUIRED to, when I wasn't. That's a lie, and lying is rude. It's more than rude when backed with police authority and the threat of being locked in a cage. 5. I declined to ID because it was my way of testing to see how respectful and lawful this officer was going to be, when I had reasonable suspicion that he may have known Shane personally.

I want to hear the the follow up convo with the officer at the station. His demeanor was very aggressive towards you with no reason. That was a good read for suspecting he was friends with the contractor. His body language was completely different when he was standing by the truck. The PA Troopers were very professional. I’m sure they were annoyed that they got called for “back up” and didn’t want to get roped in to it. That was a dick move to get issued those tickets.
