The following are some suggestions for changes, not to the game balance, but rather to universal quality of life changes to shields and variety in skill expression in the 1v1s game mode. 1. To put it in short, regular moves should outprioritize shield breakers most of the time. The devs need to remember that with the addition of shields, comes the addition of the classic rock paper scissors of grab, shield, and attack. The difference is, grab has been replaced with shield breakers. In smash, regular grabs are low range and low priority, and tether grabs are a free punish on whiff. Some shield breakers could act like tether grabs with longer range, but more end lag. Also, keep in mind that the rock paper scissors is not an all-encompassing rule. With mixups like command grabs that complicate the rps, it should be more of a foundation/resource to keep in the back of your mind while designing more character’s move sets around shields. 2. Right now, shields don’t have enough visual indicators. The multiversus team added a feature where shields will get slightly dimmer when at low health. This and the Dodge meter can be very hard to see in the heat of battle. A visual indicator like cracks in the shield when at low health would be nice. 3. Characters in burnout shouldn’t gain any dodge meter back well on the wall. Many characters with incontestable air specials and disjointed hit boxes (I.e. Jason, Superman) can camp on the wall, and most of the time completely wait out burn out. Some other system could be in place to force characters to at least go onto the stage or approach while they are in burnout. This planking strategy slows the game down and makes it less fun for both players. Perhaps wall slip could activate faster while characters are burnout. 4. The new parry input from shield is very clunky and unintuitive. I thought it was just my problem until I saw other people on social media and content creators voicing their opinions about it. I think it would be much more rewarding to use if the shield parry input was like smash ultimate, where you time when you drop shield to parry. The current parry input, where you hold down on the stick should still be kept for a counter to command grabs. Thank you for your time!
