LORE says that it eats its own tail. It also says that it will never run away. The developers didnt put a lot of the lore into gameplay.

Deviljho’s whole ecology would mean that he would theoretically eat it if he could. Whether in game or not. They’re constantly starving, in fact their crazy tough variant is a super starving deviljho that’s always hangry. In the games though he will just eat the monsters you slayed and I don’t remember if that can mess things up for you.

He will hunt you all over the map, interrupt fights and eat your kills. He is relentless, Savage and you never know if he might show up.

I find it really funny that something an employee said as an obvious joke was taken so seriously for so many years. edit: Even if he doesn't eat his tail in-game it would be lore accurate that he does, one Pickle did a complete extinction event in the lore so eating its own tail is not that crazy of a thing. There is still hope we will see the Pickle self-cannibalize in the future.
