Absolutely. A bunch of dusty obscure books also does si little for approachability. One should be able to reach on the shelf for a box like with many other games.

The Shipbreaker's Toolkit (18:17) is such an elegant way to add ship combat to the system without making an entire minigame separate from the rest of the experience. The deluxe box is functional art. Heck, there is even plenty of room for more pamphlets or dice in containment room A. One of the best TTRPG things I own, so excited to run more of it

@decoydave733 ай бұрын
This! ^ I've been playing rpgs since 1981, and this may be the best gamemaster's guide for any game I've ever owned. Most gamemaster's books are just a collection of special-case rules (falling, drowning, etc.) packaged with other GM-facing information (bestiary, treasures, campaign world description, etc.) As Ben points out, the Warden's Operation Manual focuses on practical how-to advice. And it's so concise!
@AyarARJ4 ай бұрын
Ben's so right about the guidance Mothership 1e gives for new GMs--I say that generally rather than Warden's because there's really great advice for various sandbox or loose-module games. Another Bug Hunt is a great guide in this respect, putting the advice from the ref books into some practice. I feel there's a lot of concrete lessons here for Death in Space or SWN GMs. Anyway, very happy with my Mothership 1e deluxe box. Worth the [long] wait, got my risky money's worth. Now, to find folks who might be interested. Ah well.

Absolutely adored this system when I got to play it, sadly my players did not jive with it as much as I did. I did a test run with it to see if it would take the strain of me running an entire ALIEN themed story campaign (this was prior to the newer ALIENS rpg releasing). I ended up settling with Call of Cthulhu 7th ed using the Icarus sci fi space setting. Upside, the whole table ended up adoring CoC so it became a staple at our table.
@megasquidd4 ай бұрын
First rule i'm changing is the skill improvement rules. My plan is to treat it like CoC and Delta Green. Use a skill, check mark.. if you survive, roll over it and get a +dX. This is a reaction to what my players find enjoyable.

YESSSS!
@Bluecho44 ай бұрын
Improving skills with years of training works a lot better for campaigns where the protagonists are spending long periods NOT having horror adventures, punctuated by brief instances of spookiness. It can work, but it requires a lot more buy-in compared to a rapid succession of adventures.

Looks great, trying to justify getting it... How well would you say it compares to the official Alien rpg or something like Void? (hard scifi horror with Mythos elements from the makers of Cthulhutech)
@shobooknight4 ай бұрын
It's very rules light even compared to a less crunchy system like Alien which can be a good or a bad thing depending on your perspective. I think it's more flexible if you want to tell a story that's not close to those of the alien franchise.

I love my copy I got through Kickstarter. Going to run my first game this Friday. My only complaint is on the box size. The height matches the digest sized books on my shelf, but hangs over the edge due to its length. If I turn it on its end to place with my D&D sized book, it is actually too tall to fit. I guess it will have to be a set piece.

I just found this game and I'm hugely impressed. I'm currently considering whether to get this version or the core set as I like the smaller black box. Will all the booklets fit into the core box together if I buy the extra books at a later date?

I have a lot of this content already (Gradient Descent, Player's survival guide, Pound of Flesh) but the combination of the bestiary and warden's guide plus this very fancy box is making it very difficult to resist the gravitational pull of this financial black hole... Extremely minor nitpick: the GM screens are (almost insignificantly) different between the deluxe and the core box. If a GM screen is a tool you really appreciate to run games, it may be worth looking into the differences.

@MGunnarson4 ай бұрын
@@dylanhughes8457 kzbin.info/www/bejne/rX6canaAa7ZjoaMsi=N4s2EFClF4TZq7Yd I compare the two screens around the 30-minute mark. Tl;dw the Core Set screen is significant shorter, I think like A5 landscape, and the deluxe screen includes some extra tables/info.
