Do you still have the plans for this chair?

As you watch the series note that I don't work from a plan. The seat template is the crucial source of information. You can download it from makeawindsor.com. Select the STORE tab. The package also includes a dimension sheet. Use those and follow the series. You will end up with a sack back Windsor. BTW, is your dog a Treeing Walker?

@thewindsorinstitute2047 he was a cross between a mountain dog and a collie I believe. Had him 16 years before he passed. The smartest dog I ever had. I had a friend that tried to contact you though your email to get the plan but you haven't replied. I have watched all your videos multiple times and enjoyed them so much

I did not use plans. Download the seat pattern and dimension sheet from the STORE tab at makeawindsor.com and follow the directions in this series. You'll end up with a completed sack back Windsor.

It is difficult to advise without seeing the cutter and tang. Was is made as a single piece? If so, try having it brazed. This require finding someone with that capability. A gunsmith perhaps.

He did not explain well the issue of bevel up or down. I think it may be a case of learning to use it one way which soon becomes comfortable, and then deciding that is the proper way. Both drawknives I use were built with the handles bent up from the flat back. That brings them parallel to the stroke with the bevel down, and is most comfortable for me. I understand that a deeper cut can be made with the bevel up, and he illustrates that by taking a deep cut using a chopping motion, something he previously said shouldn't be done That's confusing. Both my knives have a slight curve to the blade, the flat back being convex. With the bevel down , the pressure against the blade tends to straighten the blade out when cutting, so I'm pretty sure they we're designed to work that way . Obviously any carving knife can be used left or right handed so they will cut either way, but the direction of the cut is different than a chef uses carving beef. The draw knife is more complex.

Hey Mike. Thanks for your sharing the Windsor chair knowledge. Your sackback class was one of the highlights of my life. The chair I built in your class is as solid as it was when I built it in 1998 and it should easily last another 100 years. Hope you are well.

Thank you for your kind comments, David. I hope you make a chair that your family will honor and pass on to your descendants. You are correct. The VanHovenometer is named for the student who suggested the idea. That was our practice. When someone had a suggestion that proved to make the process easier for others we honored the guy by naming his suggestion after him. I would then come up with a humorous name for the device or technique.

Mike, These videos are great! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. But I must know! ...please tell us the backstory of the name: VanHoven-ometer? (maybe it could be a KZbin short all it's own) My money is on a former student-or former mentor.
