The best simple tip for live mixing is dropping the 1 on the 1. I hear so many DJays just dropping a down beat on top of just any down beat. It will just get you through the night, but if you want a real mix, find your best intro 1 beat, set a cue point, then drop that on the 1 beat of the song currently playing. This way the hook, the chorus and all of the parts of both tracks will go together especially if your using stems for acapella tracks over your mix. Try it before discounting it. All professional mixes use this simple principle. It will take your mixing to another level.

For the DJs that live mix, they have mastered the skills of creativity and innovation. They know their music and they have spent hours mastering it. It’s not gonna be perfect all the time but it’s always a learning experience. DJs that use premix music/edits, use it as a tool. It saves time and error. Nevertheless, only DJs know if they’re faking the funk when it’s played. I don’t see why it can’t be used. It’s prepped and mixed for a reason; entertainment purposes, like cake mix, ready to go. Either or, every mix or live mix was coined from an idea. How we go about using it or mixing on the fly tells the story about each DJ and how they executed.

That’s the difference between a DJ and a Selectah. Live mixing helps push the art form, express “your” individual creativity 🙌🏾

DJ Edits are tools and I use them as needed but edits shouldn't be used as a substitute for live mixing.....great video, food for thought ....Thanks DJ Jay Book!

This DJ game has changed a lot. I would never use a segue edit. But to each their own. “The party in the USA” into Britney “Oops” is very easy to do live. Drop the “Oops” on a 3 and. Today’s DJ don’t know how to count music. When I see DJ using AUTOMIX to get through an event is where I have a major problem. I’m calling all them out. I’m ready for the smoke 💨

Ok you call them out then what? I just started trying to learn how to DJ. I consider myself a beginner even though I been producing music for TV for 20 years. That wouldn't feel so good for my spirit if I did something "wrong" all because someone else deems it "wrong". Did the guest jump down my throat because I used Automix. I'm assuming you're talking about smart fader. That attitude helps nobody. I wouldn't want to talk to you even if had major experience. Now if approached me nicely and taught me how to do whatever the "proper way" is. I would respect that. Being ready for smoke gives me the vibes that you would be hostile if I'm not Dj'ing in the "pure way"

No problem in playing a pre-mix. Problem is when you pretend you're mixing it live...

hmmm, I mean we use edits, and original to mix. a track is a track right? even if we mix an edit with an original that is mixing. some of them edits are hard to find too. so i think us as DJ's we gotta find the gems and bless the crowd with it. we can take that edit and flip it too right... we can be creative with edits too. just my two cents.....

As a beginner who's learning how to DJ. I love the idea of live mixing different unexpected tracks. However, for now I would have to create my own mix. I have been producing music for 20 years so I understand how to do it. Plus I only have a 2 channel controller. So if I'm using the instrumental on one deck and the vocal on another. How would I get to a new song? It would be easier for me to make a premix that I create so I can have my next song que'ed up.

I’m such an old school turntable type Dj it is a must that I do all of the mixing. Even if I start off playing one of my own mash up mixes I will just step in the mix live and take it to the house

I have no problem playing dj edits. Its not a huge thing as long as the crowd loves it. If a dj decides to make edits on the fly, that's totally personal preference. I don't make dj edits, nor do I want. It still takes creatively to put the records together.

It 100% depends on my mood and the mix. I do a lot of live mixes but some by higher level djs (deville, jd live, even Steve) are so good I can’t recreated so I use theirs. For example even Steve has a remix where it starts can’t hold us and when they say put your hands up it cuts to all I do is win. But I will use that and then mix that into something else depending on my mood and the vibe. So it gives me a second to think ahead while the crowd thinks I am always mixing I’m doing about 70%

As a beginner, I use edits from time to time, but I don't pretend like I created that mix. I'm still learning. I use my flx4 that has the option to help with my transition. But again, I'm still learning.

If you use the sync button . or your using a laptop looking at the bpm to mix and not mixing by ear . or stems.. then go ahead and use edits to. Djaying has evolved . as long as you keep the people dancing and having a good time... use what works best for you .

Hello, I work here in Brazil in the following way: long events, with a reception, where people go to dance at specific moments, such as weddings, corporate parties, I use pre-recording sets for myself, because here in Brazil there are many regional rhythms that normally We don't mix, like samba, axé, forró and so on, when I see it's time to make the crowd dance then I change the musical styles. Here we play a lot of the Brazilian funk style, so at the moment I do it live, I also do live mixes of electronic music, and hip hop, that's the way I work, because depending on the event, there's no need for the DJ to mix songs. environments.

Here in Spain most DJ's USE & ABUSE mashups. Personally I feel like the magic of DJing is about mixing, so I mostly go the mixing live route. Whenever I play a mashup is something that I prepared & produced myself previously. That comes really handy if you're music producer

I do it both ways. Using a pre-mixed edit is only shameful if the DJ acts like they are actually mixing it live. I watched a short where Justin the DJ did that. I thought he mixed it until I saw the edit on youtube.
