In high level Catan, "pity tokens" and the like are not necessary because people will naturally balance the table. For example, feeding road or army to the person with weak production in order to stop the strongest player from winning quickly

9 out of 10 times, the whiny "unlucky" player just didn't play well. Same as poker and other games of skill plus luck. The good players understand variance enough to not whine when it's their turn to get unlucky, and the bad ones can't figure out why they lose, so they decide they are unlucky.

for selling a port you need extra cards for doing the trade no?, like for example if ypu dont have the material they want, you cant simply accept them for free or do you?
@nicholasherrera3055
@nicholasherrera3055 2 ай бұрын
How I started doing this was I would give them a single random card in trade for three cards (two of them being port cards, and one of them being a free card for me), then I'd trade with the bank for whatever resource they wanted, then I'd trade that resource to them in exchange for the original random card I'd given them to start the transaction. This basically creates a free resource for me, and also helps anyone with a resource surplus they want to turn into something else.

There's also a Catan Dice app for Android that does the same thing as the event cards in perfect bell curve dice distribution. It's possible to do the event cards with just using the dice rolls

As a professional poker player and a casual Settlers of Catan player with an ELO of 1300, I can tell you that mathematics doesn't really have much to do with poker; it's an enduring misconception for beginners. Poker is about understanding your opponent's behavior and playing your hand accordingly. If you ever see two cards of the same suit on the flop and two more of the same suit come out, or you're missing one card for a flush, you know you're in a 50/50 situation. Similarly, if you lack one card for a straight, you're aware that you're not in a favorable position and need to play the hand differently. That's simple mathematics. Mathematical insights in poker mainly assist those who analyze statistical data to determine the long-term viability of certain playing styles, and so on..

I am not a pro poker player, but I would consider myself above the average person. Reading others is definitely more important than being good at calculating odds. Especially short term. However, a better player can always lose to someone with better luck. However, long term, playing hands with higher probability of winning, will eventually be favorable. Catan is not a long term game. With my limited experience of catan, understanding the probability of craps is much closer. Seven out, is the robber. You can go on a long roll with never hitting a 7, but eventually, every roll in craps will eventually end because seven will inevitably be rolled. Dice (or roulette) always comes down to sample size.

All of these ideas are horrible. I get that there is variance in Catan but part of the skill and strategy of the game is understanding probability/statistics/variance and playing accordingly. The other thing people forget about Catan is trading. If you dont roll a resource you can trade for it, port for it, or rob it. Sometimes the dice will require you to pivot from your pre-planned strategy and let the dice/resources guide the game. Catan is clearly a game of skill just like Poker. A beginner can beat a pro in Poker if they get a great hand, but the pro is going to win 9/10 times. A pro Catan player will probably beat a beginner 7 or 8 times out of 10. Catan is a game of skill not variance and the variance is part of the game and people need to understand you have to manage the variance not try to remove it

Nice video, very well edited. This is Bo here, I have a few things to add that might help the viewer better understand the context 1. Thiago (White color) wasn't a native English speaker, so there was definitely a communication barrier. That's why I had to repeat phrases many times and physically point things out such as the resources to trade. 2. All of the players were very strong and definitely knew each player's position at any given moment, so everyone knew others were effectively at 9 at the end. 3. One part that didn't make the video was when I quoted "Mono defense" on my final turn, to make sure Eric couldn't win with a mono on his turn, but we couldn't execute it on Kristian's turn. It was a 3.5 hour game, so we were all incredibly exhausted. 4. Thiago had a chance to win when he pulled a development card but missed. He also could have won with a 2 roll on his turn, that would have been epic. He played a really great under the radar game. 5. Eric calling bathroom break was genius, he did this at the US Nationals 2022 as well. Game changing meta, I will do that at my next tournament. Eric and are I both from New York, so it was great to compete against him, and help each other get a chance to win. I shook his hand after, but might not have been captured on the video. 6. A lot of respect to Kristian, he played extremely well and a super great person to connect with. 7. I called the judge to get a clarification on a new vague rule change for this tournament. The rule was "If a player attempts to negotiate a trade before completing the robber action, the robber will be placed in the desert and the player receives no cards as in rule 3.0.14(b)." However, as I learned, the rule does allow you to negotiate about trading "non-blocks", just not resources. Anyways, hope these comments are helpful. Keep up on making these videos, I enjoy watching them!

All great points! I want to add so that's it's more visible. This is an overly dramatic take on the game and so there is forced conflict to make it more interesting. In reality, all these players have great respect for each other and all are very skilled or else they wouldn't be there. And Bo, I'm glad you saw this video so quickly because I forgot to include a thank you in the video. I very much enjoy watching you play and I think you make game way more entertaining. These videos wouldn't exist without the level of excitement you bring to the table. Finally, I think you do Catan coaching or something right? You should totally plug your website or whatever.

I think the bathroom break is bit of unnecessary gamesmanship that bends the realm of fairness a bit too far. For example, after buying 2 devs am I within my rights to fall out of my chair and "injure" myself in order to take attention away from the table. It is something that is considered HORRIBLE sportsmanship elsewhere, but maybe catan is just anything goes? LMK your thoughts as I am curious and not judging anyone personally.

@@johnmcdermott5922 It was a 3.5 hour game, it was reasonable to have a break, it was just a very strategic break. It's definitely a gray area in terms of sportmanship in general but when the game heavily relies on social manipulation, then it feels somewhat appropriate.

@@KenPlaysCatan I think you do a disservice to yourself and the catan community with this statement. It is conflict but a conflict of minds and how to influence each other through strategy and social consciousness. The rivalry is there and in real time and real, but that doesn't mean the people behind how they play the game dislike/hate each other which I think/ i hope is what you mean. Everyone here is for the love of the game and that game is a battle of minds and wits. One of the great things about Catan is it is all about the mind games and the strategy, but never actually personal. It is what has made it such an enjoyable game between my friends and when playing online and to state otherwise discount part of what makes the game great. This is the first video of yours that I have seen, have liked and subscribed as it was brilliant and well explained. You don't need to dramatise things and the drama is already there and you explained and brought it all together brilliantly.

If he goes last, that gives him 4 rolls. The most resources produced from 4 rolls is 24 resources amongst all players. That's 36 resources between 4 players. He trades 3 away (using combo trades to make it legal if needed) which leaves him with 33 res. 15 for 5 vps 6 for 3 roads- 2 vps 5 for 1 city- 2vp Last vp from starting settlement. All he would need is 26 res.

Learning to deal with unfairness is an essential life-skill. Tired of not having your numbers rolled? Make sure you select a decent spread of numbers to start off with! You'll never learn to do this if someone gives you (yuck) pity tokens.
@lordad
@lordad 2 ай бұрын
Thats not how it works ;) RNG means that despite having a decent spread of numbers you dont get your rolls and its not your fault and there is nothing you can do. The best Catan players in the world have ~ 38% winrate.... 100% rng would be 25% winrate for everybody. While Catan also involves a good amount of skills even the top 10 players in the world have less than 50% winning chance against 3 other players who watched maybe 3-4 youtube videos and have played 20 games in their live. that says a lot
