I don't know when you did your hike but we were on the Section in Tettegouche SP in the middle of September and with all the streams and rivers low we just rocked hopped across the river where the bridge was out by the High Falls. Obviously, don't try if the water levels are normal. You still could have gone to the High Falls and down the steps to the bottom of the falls. I don't know what other Falls you missed, maybe the 2 step Falls? That was a short hike in as well.

Wow, somehow I had never heard of Bennington triangle! My dad and I saw some strange floating lights while camping just south of the official triangle at Sherman brooks campsite back in 2017. We saw a bright light about 50 yards away in the woods that slowly dimmed into two tiny specs that we watched dance around and get brighter and dimmer until we eventually looked away. Then not 10 mins later we were trying to sleep and facing the other direction in the tent and saw a bright light bobbing along about 15 ft in front of our tent. We immediately assumed someone was walking with a headlamp, but then it suddenly went out and we heard no one walking or stumbling over the rocks and leaves as would inevitably have happened. I just googled the Bennington triangle and it’s apparently known for people seeing strange floating lights among other things. I’m feeling very validated now 😂. Definitely was a creepy inexplicable experience.

Thank you for talking me out of hiking the LT 😂. I’ve hiked some of the AT in VT and all of this information tracks with my experience there. Definitely had to cut way back on mileage due to the extremely rough terrain. And I’m with you, some misery is what makes backpacking rewarding but you need to have enough enjoyable moments to make it worth it too.

Map and compass as backup? I would like you to do a video on just how that works if your phone dies and you don't have a backup GPS device like InReach. If you do not know where you are and you are not up high above the treeline, just how do you figure out your actual position? If you have a map, in order to use the compass you need to be able to see distant landmarks. If you are on a popular trail you can simply wait till another hiker walks by and ask them or else start hiking with them . . .

To increase efficiency in your initial setup here, you could try a wider cook pot, as in larger diameter, so less heat escapes. Also, your top mounted burner could connected to a MSR Lowdown adapter, making it a remote canister stove. Increasing the carrying weight of course, but also make it possible to isolate the burner inside a windscreen without overheating the canister (which now stands outside of the windscreen)

Got lucky this year on my end to end hike. Not a single day of rain I started August 27, and finished September 21. Still, mile for mile, it was the most challenging hike I’ve done, and that includes the AT. Rained a couple of times overnight, but nothing while I was hiking. Overall, I loved the Long Trail, and loved the challenges! Hiking the AZT starting late March, 2025. Can’t wait! Bubblehead, 62 years old.
