But you have not mentioned that .33 mil or 1/3 of a mil is 11.8 inches at 1000 yards. Must of the targets are 12,10, 7, 6, 5 or even 4 inches. You will miss the shoot for sure. SD matter at long range targets

I completely agree with the premise of this video. One thing that should be considered with a 50 FPS extreme spread is the point of impact shift due to barrel harmonics if the load is not in a good node. if you have a minute of point of impact shift from velocity and then a minute for impact shift from harmonics or whatever else is causing it, that’s 20” at thousand yards Plus the point of impact shift that could occur just from weird lighting throughout the day, bright sunny conditions, cloudy conditions, etc. that could all stack up to be over 20 inches at 1000 yards. That all being said I’m not happy unless I get ES of around 15fps. because we shoot varmints at extended ranges, usually beyond 800 and even 1000 yards. But fundamentals is by far the most important thing.

I guess the thing that's hard for me to wrap my head around is you can seat the bullet 80 thou deeper (.08) and it'll work, but if you lower your shoulder bump .08, that could create ridiculous pressures.

There may be a flaw in your data. When you change the muzzle velocity in the Kestrel, I am guessing it retains the 100yard zero. So that means when you drop the velocity, the Kestrel automatically adjusts the trajectory up a small amount to get the zero back on at 100 yards, thus affecting the whole trajectory. The further out you go, the greater the effect. This is what my ballistics app does. If the Kestrel also does this, then your data is wrong - not sure by how much, but it is wrong.

One problem in your logic, you’re only applying vertical dispersion due to velocity deviation. You left out the vertical deviation from natural variance in the rifle’s inherent precision. For example, that 10” of velocity variation combined with the 10” groups the rifle shoots at 1,000 could easily mean there is 20” of vertical between any two given rounds. Not make or break, but a consideration.

Tall Target Test Worksheet The intent of this worksheet is to assist in calculating a scope correction factor (CF) based on shooting the tall target test at 100 yards. The point is to see if your scope is really giving you what you’re dialing for adjustment. If not, the correction factor is applied to raw ballistic calculations to make up for the error in scope adjustment. Procedure: 1) Set up a tall target at 100 yards with a vertical line (confirmed with plumb bob or level). 2) Place an aim point near the bottom of the vertical line and shoot a group to confirm zero. 3) Dial up (or hold) at least 30 MOA (or 10 MILS) of elevation and shoot another group. 4) Measure the distance between shot groups with a tape measure. 5) Use the formula below to calculate your scopes Correction Factor (CF). 6) Apply the Correction Factor to any raw ballistic solution to account for scope tracking error. Calculate Correction Factor Based on Range and POI Shift According to the following formula Range Units Adjustment Units Yards MOA Yards MILS Meters MOA Meters MILS Constant 0.01047 0.03599 0.01145 0.03936 Example: First step is to select a constant based on measurement units: Expected POI Shift = Dialed x Range x Constant Correction Factor (CF) = Expected POI Shift ÷ Actual POI Shift Suppose the range to target is 102 yards. You dial 30 MOA and get a POI shift of 29.8 inches. The formula will apply as follows: 1) Since you’re dealing with yards and MOA, select the Constant of 0.01047. 2) Next, calculate Expected POI Shift: Expected POI Shift = Dialed x Range x Constant Expected POI Shift = 30 MOA x 102 yards x 0.01047 = 32.04 inches. 3) Finally, calculate Correction Factor: CF = Expected POI Shift ÷ Actual POI Shift CF = 32.04 Inches ÷ 29.8 Inches CF = 1.075 4) Apply this correction factor to any raw ballistic prediction. So if the ballistics program calls for 30 MOA elevation for some shot, you should dial: © 2021 Applied Ballistics, “All rights reserved. This document contains proprietary information. Do not distribute without the prior written consent of the copyright owner.” 30 MOA x 1.075 = 32.25 MOA to actually get 30 MOA The procedure is the same for any combination of units and range, just plug in your numbers and apply

Thank you for showing this to us. It is definitely a thing to look out for. I wasted 100 rounds today at the range because of this reason. I don’t have a scope level and my shots at 600 yards kept on shooting high and to the right and it wasn’t the wind. I ordered a bubble level to for my scope now. At 100 to 300 yards I been hitting dead on and didn’t really notice until getting out to 600 yards. Is being canted at closer distance negligible ?

@@longrangewiththelillys1221 F-class for one format. Anyway, point being anyone who is shooting long range or improving the ES or SD is focused on being a long range shooter. To consider yourself proficient you need to consistently shoot 1 MOA. I’m not there yet but I understand the goal. To consider being off by 10 inches at 1000 is unacceptable. Same as being off by 1” at 100 yards. Low numbers is not everything if your consistently accurate. Competing with yourself to be the best you can is the only “format” we should be concerned about.
@longrangewiththelillys1221

We agree. It appears you have missed the point of my video. A lot of people spend a lot of time and effort chasing ES/SD. When they could be focusing on their fundamentals and training. The point was your SD isn’t holding you back. Your shooting is. In F class or bench rest ES/SD Is far more important because there are less other aspects to focus on.

I know this video is from 2 months ago, but what is wrong with working to be proficient at multiple disciplines? Gatekeepers are exactly why the majority of people don't pursue or take a chance to jump into things that they might love. Be welcoming, offer all the advice you can, and don't be pompous! Enjoy the fact that the sport has grown as big as it is and be stoked and proud about all the new faces getting into the sport of precision rifle shooting, or any shooting sport for that matter.
