Hahah the age old question.. "Who let the dogs out" has been answered! One of your projects should cover that tune in a Doom Core metal version. This is looking awesome. Love the preview of how that blue on the back is going to pop with final clear coat. I been on break way longer than I should have as well but pushin thru that more and more as we get past this part of the year and into a new one.

"As goes the project - so goes the mood of the engineers." I did the same thing with Tung oil - never even read the instructions - just let it soak overnight instead of wiping it off after a few minutes. Then I tried to fix it by soaking it in solvent. After 3 days I gave up. They say it helps to RTFM. Five years and about 100 builds or mods later, I tend to use rattle can lacquer and Keda wood dyes mixed w/ h2o for most finishes, and mineral oil for fretboards. I find them easy to use, low cost, and easy error recovery for the hobbyist builder such as myself. But I still experiment with other finishes. On my current build, masking tape from polishing frets pulled up the enamel clearcoat and the Teflon tape laminate on the back of the neck. I was left with clearcoat on parts and not on others. When you're pushing the envelope of your guitar building knowledge and experience, such setbacks are all part of the game. As a veteran luthier once told me when I was a newbie, "Make sure you're enjoin' the ride!". And remember: "The mark of a good luthier is not how few mistakes they make, it how many they can recover from!". There are a number of quotes that apply to building guitars (and other things like hot rods). "As goes the project...", "They say it helps to RTFM", "Make sure you're enjoin' the ride!", and the "The mark of a good luthier..." are four of them. Others that apply are: "Rome was not built in a day" - it takes serious time to build serious stuff. "Sometimes you gotta break a few eggs to make a REAL mayonnaise" - extraordinary results sometimes require extraordinary efforts.

The first time I tried Keda wood dye I got that same exact finish - by accident. I was going for burgundy. I started with red, but it was way too light - bubblegum pink. I tried to darken it with some blue and got what you have. Later I saw a PRS vid on staining. It's how they get their "raspberry dragon's breath" type finishes.

I did the same type thing with the BRS and the Tru oil. I laid two heavy coats to start as they say but didnt wipe it off quick enough so the subsequent coats remained tacky for months. I finally figured out if I wipe it down with cold water and a damp towel then kind of burnish it with course closed cell foam it finally solidified and started to shine up. I am really diggin that blue on the back of the body on this one. Ohh man those plastic shavings from that pick guard material.. NIGHT MARE I am still finding that stuff around or stuck by static to things nearly 4 full years after my first build.

Sorry you are having issues with the neck. but I'm sure you will figure it out and make it work when it's done. If yo wind up spraying the neck you night be able to tent the spray with the color you want to get it closer to what you want the fret board to look like.

Don't feel bad about one extra tuner. When you build stuff, you accumulate extra parts (unless you toss them). It's the nature of things. You should get 2 more tuners and make a CBG! Nice sled - seen stuff like that online, but's always really expensive.
@normbarrows22 ай бұрын
Busy is good. My current rule of thumb for bridge placement is saddles all the way forward, place the saddles at the theoretical saddle line (25.5" / 648mm), then move them 1mm towards the nut, just in case (647mm from the nut line). This should give you 1mm adjustment towards the nut, and the rest towards the bridge for the #1 string.
@normbarrows22 ай бұрын
While 3 left hand and 4 right hand tuners is less common than 4 left + 3 right on a seven string, it still works just fine - as long as it all fits and looks good when it's done. Sanding the fingerboard to 2000 is a nice touch.

I lost my ESP LTD M2 when my guitar shop burned down, along with my guitar collection (96 guitars) about a year ago. I've decided my 3rd build in my new guitar shop will be a minimalist version of it: 24 fret, 25.5" scale length, Floyd Rose, EMG 81x at the bridge, no neck pickup, no volume, no tone, but I'll add an on/off switch. Where did you get the 7 string Floyd Rose? That would be way cool. Wonder if they make a 7 string EMG 81x...

I got it from a dealer on Reverb. And I'm pretty sure they do make 7 string EMG 81s too.

The dye job you described is PRS's "Raspberry Dragon's Breath": Keda wood dye and water, dye blue, sand back, dye red, or dye red, sand back, dye blue. By varying the order and strengths you can get a variety of effects all in the blue - purple - red - pink shades. I used that technique on my low budget build: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqGvpKiofpqkidU

Glad to see you're doing this - so few people are doing builds on KZbin these days. RE: the carve: in guitars, there's what's necessary, what's nice, and what's bling. Carves generally fall under the "nice to have" category. Probably a good choice for a custom build. It makes the guitar just that much more special. Next time I'd recommend you do the custom carve.

If it mix... I nix. Unless I am doing something in a full on shop for that specific purpose I try not to use things that have to be mixed other than like powdered dyes and water or thinning down paint before spraying. One they are sloppy. Two they dont age well, and three they tend to be serious fire hazards. The color looks bright and even and really came to life under the wet resin. Dont forget to clean them fret slots good and maybe even several times so they dont give you an issue later with being filled with hard plastics.
@eklypse693 ай бұрын
Thankfully, the Crimson dyes don't require mixing. And yeah, I think at this point, I cut the fret slots a grand total of 5 times. I need to work on order of operations some more.
