So, if I'm stockpiling ammo like a crazy person to hold off the mob, and the mob gets me because I can only shoot one gun at a time, didn't I just resupply the mob with both "platforms" and ammo? The whole SHTF thing is rife with unqualified speculation.
@evanwindomАй бұрын
A shotgun would be well down on my list for big game hunting as he stated. That's what the scoped rifle is for. I'd also stay away from Mossberg shotguns. I teach hunter education, and our training guns are Mossbergs. Reliability is very poor.

The best practical advice I've read in the comments was about not keeping all of your nuts in the same squirrel's cache in case you have to move. And the other suggestion I would make is to resist the urge to brag to your buddies about how much pew pew you have stockpiled. I think that as soon as a prep becomes public knowledge, it's less of a prep and more of a lure.

"Now please keep in mind that these figures that I'm discussing are minimum requirements." Hmmm.... something's not quite right here. Let's make a little tweak. "Now please keep in mind that these figures that I'm discussing are *_my personal opinions about what should be considered_* minimum requirements." What makes this gentleman the undisputed expert on the subject? How many SHTF situations has he survived? Some of his recommendations are pretty good, but a little humility from him would go a long way. Suggest - don't lecture. When it comes to rifle ammo, if you're shooting something that's relatively inexpensive, such as .308, you're looking at $600 or so. Choose something with some heft, like a .300WM, and those 600 rounds are going to cost you upwards of $1,200 easily. 10,000 rounds per platform? Buying in bulk, you're still talking about $5,000 for something as commoditized as 5.56. Then there's replacing what you use in training in order to maintain that stockpile. "Kids, I'm sorry it's Ramen and SPAM again, but Daddy's gotta have some more buckshot."

nice thing about handguns are they are concealable and tinier. The ar, ak, rifles, shotguns are all big long guns, not so concealable, and ammos for them are pricier. I would add a 22LR handgun, as ammos are cheap and plenty everywhere. Assassins use them.

Too much practice ammo. I think shooting 10 live rounds of pistol and 15 rounds of rifle ammo will allow it to Last. No one can store 2400 rounds of practice ammo in SHTF. That practice ammo will still allow the gun to function after the defensive ammo Is used up. No ammo is a bad situation!

I used to maintain a minimum of 1,000 rds for each weapon. I am increasing that as much as I can afford.

Keep in mind. It's better to have pit 900 rounds down range and only have 100 rounds you can well place for defense then have 1000 rounds for defense that you're just spraying and praying with. Also, take your gun apart and put it back together regularly to memorize it in the event you have to replace something. Also, get something like iTargetPro to practice dry firing drills and take courses. There are some courses at Warrior Poet Society. John Lovell, founder of the site (and on YT), is a green beret and has combat experience. He's also a good Christian man that doesn't drop F bombs every 5 words (at least on his channel. I've never met him in person). Also shoot IDPA matches could help improve skill.

LONG RANGE (200+ yds) - M-1 Garand - Reknown for its durability/dependability MEDIUM RANGE (50-200) - Rem 788, 308 - Bolt action, very dependable SHORT RANGE (0-50) - Mossberg 590 - pump action, as dependable as a rock All firearms are bulletproof. I would choose #4 Buckshot (41 pellet) so there are no dead spaces. I also recommend a good reloader, primers, powder, bullets, and cases (cheaper than ammo) . Powder should be a multi-caliber (Unique come to mind)

I believe ammo can prep is huge. Metal cans. Seal seams, remoisten rubber gasket with 100% silicone. Line can with “PIG” mat. Toss in 50 gram desiccant add ammo (no boxes,plastic material ) top off with second 50 gram desiccant. Keep all cans the same size for ease in stacking. I like 50 cal size. Don’t over fill. Can get heavy…

10k rounds per platform? You'd better have some replacement barrels and a lot of spare parts and gunsmithing gadgetry on hand as well. 10k per platform is grossly unrealistic for 99.9% of our citizenry. That's over $6k (six thousand dollars) worth of ammo per $600 (minimum) AR platform. That's pie in the sky ... not to mention weight factors, factored-in. A good barrel is burned-out at 5k rounds.
@alangriggs44205 ай бұрын
To cut down on cost, buy a ammo reloader. Powder, primers, and bullets can be purchased for less than factory ammo. The ammunition you designate for fighting should be in stripper clips and stored in military surplus ammo cans. Practice ammo can be reloaded and set aside. Save your brass as it can be reloaded 5-10 times before it needs to be replaced.

This speculation is mostly hogwash! If you live out in the sticks with decent, friendly, prepared neighbors, a ton of ammo might not be needed, but if there are raiding parties going around in your area, 1000 rounds might not be enough. If you live in a city, like chicago, well, when things go bad, you will never have enough ammo because if you are still shooting, you have supplies, and they will always think of alternative ways of getting to you and testing them out until they do get you! And there is always the issue of fire, they just might tire of having you be unreachable and just decide to burn you out, then ammo or no ammo, you are screwed!

Very informative video. I always try to grab an extra box of ammo whenever I'm at the gun shop. If there are sales on something in a particular cartridge, I'll focus on stacking that. As for the minimum threshold for readiness, i dont have one. I just keep on stacking because I have no idea when time will be up. Also, stack and rotate medical supplies, too!

Well I dunno; does one really need thousands and thousands and thousands of rounds for his service rifle? How many gun battles should one expect to get into? One needs to avoid shootouts if you can; if you get a serious wound, count on NOT having a skilled surgical center to patch you up again. Spend some of that ammo money on the best armor and ballistic headgear. And tools and materials to harden your positions. Or even NVDs, thermal gear, FPV drones, and other early warning devices to help deny an enemy the element of surprise.

rabbits have no fat. Ditto squirrels. They are 500 calories for a cotton tail and 400 for a BIG squirrel. You need 2500 calories per day, as a big man, to hole up in a tunnel in warm weather and not lose bodyweight. If you're out and about all day, in cold weather, you can easily need twice that much. A 135 lb deer, as fat as they get in late fall, offers only 40,000 calories. You need fat animals, like wood chucks, beaver, coons, possums, waterfowl. This is in early fall or at least late summer, only. The rest of the year, they have little or no fat. Fish are 8% bodyfat, but you need 10%, at least. Green plants offer zero fat. The only fat in plants is in seeds or nuts, maybe a few tubers, It just wont fly, guys. You have to cache food, or bring it with you for the bugout.

20 guns or 10,000 rds of centerfire ammo, but no night vision, no night sights, no armor, no silenced auto rifle, means you dont have a clue. it only takes a kid with a 22lr rifle to kill you from 100m away and it takes very little for him to have an effective, field-expedient silencer on that .22.. He wont be afraid to shoot at you, cause you'll never know where the shot came from. YOU, however, will call-in a dozen killers, from a mile around all directions, if you fire just one shot.
@SonnyCrocket-p6h11 ай бұрын
you wont GET to diversify, folks. That's my point. Yu'll have to constantly wear almost all of your BOB, so you'll have only one longarm, You can't tell when you'll have to fight, so you'll need the most effective fighting longarm and that AINT a shotgun, nor bolt action, nor anything that's noisy, or slow for repeat shots, or short ranged/feeble. you've got to be able to reliably shoot thru car bodies, windshields, and snipe effectively to at least 300m. "Better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war". Better to have to hunt with a fighting rifle than have to fight with a hunting type arm. If you have a brain, you'll lhave a year's worth of buried food at your BOL, and just dig a tunnel and wait a year, while the 99% die off. Forget this post shtf hunting bs, cause that's all it is, bs.
@SonnyCrocket-p6h11 ай бұрын
it took 2 years of the worst fighting ever seen for Audie murphy to kill 241 men. He had a LOT of luck and a lot of help. It was also vs smgs and bolt actions, which will NOT be the case in the US. There's 10s of millions of 22lr autorifles here and it's very easy to silence such a gun. There's many millions of scoped long range rifles. and shotguns with buckshot are far deadlier than smgs. We have millions and millions of vehicles, paved roads. No place in the lower 48 states is more than a night's motorcycle ride and a night's hike from millions of people. Your AO or BOL is nothing like as "remote' as you "think" it is.
@SonnyCrocket-p6h11 ай бұрын
you can only carry one longarm, cause you'll constantly have to carry 40 lbs of other stuff. It will be far to easy to get cut off from your "base". There will be no safe place to leave the other guns. You'll have to wrap them up in plastic, remove the bolts/hammers and cache the parts in two different places. I only own the guns I"ll take if shtf, on foot. My wife gets the belt 9mm practice gun. Our teenaged daughter gets the silenced 22lr pistol.. I get the pocket 9mm and the silenced AR and 22 unit Nothing else is needed. You guys with 20 guns and no night vision, no silencer, are going to find out the hard way. Same for those with' "only" 10 guns and 20,000 rds (not 22lr)
@SonnyCrocket-p6h11 ай бұрын
you dont want the expense or hassle of more guns. The shotgun is a bad joke. The game will all be gone, you can''t be out and about in daylight, can't show a light at night, cant mae noise. TRAPS can "hunt" for you in 50 places at once, silently and can be set and serviced at NIGHT. Netfishing is far more likely to feed you than small game ever will. If you've got a shorty AR, silencer, nigh sights, scope option, trigger job and .22lr conversion unit and a pocket 9mm, you can do anything that needs to be done (with a gun). in just 8.5 lbs and the 1 lb scope and mount will normally ride on your belt in a hard, protective case, as a substitute for a binocular. Cause you have to remain hidden in daytime, ther'es very little need of a scope. What you need is night-vision goggles, if you'd like to survive the first month of shtf.
@SonnyCrocket-p6h11 ай бұрын
no, you wont need a lot of ammo, or you'll never make it. You've got to dig a 10m long tunnel the firs week of shtf, and stay in it for a year, while the 99% dies-off. Come out only at night, for one hour or so each time, to access a food bucket and cook a meal. Night vision is a must. The animals will all be gone in 90 days, the game in 60, eaten by cats and dogs. So there will be very little to shoot at and the ammo will be too precious. You can't be making noise, and you can't be in any fire fights, or the odds will get you.
@SonnyCrocket-p6h11 ай бұрын
regardless of what you want, you can have at most one longarm and at most a couple of pistols, and only if all 3 are lw, compact guns and only if they use lw, compact ammo, cause you'll have to be also carrying 30+ lbs of food, water, pack, spare clothing, armor, ammo, night vision, helmet, counterweight, sleep/shelter gear, etc and you'll have to be able run and gun with it. you have to be olympically fit to do that with 45 lbs.
