You know the USAF with NASA backing them and lobbying to get the latest and greatest bells and whistles. If the F-14 TC that was redesigned because the biggest outcry was maintenance. Maintenance personnel was not able to sufficiently and with a good Pace to do a turnaround. That was not all true. There were a few isolated spots that the maintenance crew were unable to check. And yes, I agree that every aspect of every aircraft should be inspected. If not to at least save our pilots. They had created 2 different f-14s one was even a stealth model in totality. Proof of concept was completed and also they were able to access every inspection post on the new TC. I'm here to tell you now it was not 200 million in today's money. There would be no way on God's green earth for the next TC model to even come close to that amount. MBTs are getting into lots of trouble in Ukraine because of drones. Both Russians & Ukrainians had been using cheap drones to kill off MBTs in the battlefield. The Ukrainian drones were so rudimentary that they were simply put together with commercial drone components. These FPV suicide drones strapped with explosives proved to be very effective as tank killers! The cost ratio were against the MBTs. Cost of these drones were like $10~20k vs the $6~10 million MBTs! This is what wars is all about. Technology changes how war is being fought. Tanks were once the darling of battlefields as they smash through defence lines. Now MBT might be obsolete due to drones. New war vehicles need to be redesigned because of drones.
