While I was in the Army especially in Nam too many lifers were never wrong. While our helicopter company got a generator & flight line lights due to a lazy lifer did not believe a private that ran to the operations room to report he saw two guys in black pajamas climbing under the wire. Lifer told him he was seeing things. Maybe 20 minutes later I was on corner guard post when the first of five helicopters blow up. This lifer drove around demanding we stsnd next to undanaged helicopters. Guy with me was a short timer and yelled thru the wire " Sir go F yourself ". A few days later a worthless lifer sent a warrant officer to our club to demand we install over 1500' of heavy wire & at least 50 lights. Tokd the warrant officer that I was an electrician and if I had the 6 fastest electricisns in the world helping me lights would not be on for a few days. He went back & told the lifer Captain what I said and he said its a direct order that we get all of the lights working that night. Me & my sargesnt each got a six pack of beer and went out to the pitch dark flight line and drank the beer then throw some cables around. Next day they had halve ass Pacufic Architects & Engineers finish the job. Told another lifer that they were using a cut off roofing nail & a wrap of tape to connect the heavy cables. Told the lifer that the lights will start blinking every time the wind blows and with not run more then 10 minutes. Told me I didn't know what I was talking sbout. Lights completly stopped working after 5 minutes and numerous nail splices were red hot & smoking. Then two thirds if the lights were dim because of the large voltage drop. Told him for every 1% voltage drop that incandescent light output drops 3%. Told me again that I did not know what I was talking about so showed him in an engineering book that I had that said the same t. Told him that if he wants it working correctly to have a warrant officer in charge of us and we need another 1500' of wire to split up the single circuit. Had a cool warrant officier who like that we were getting the job done so he dropoed off some beer for us.
