Farewell: John Dowland

John Dowland (1563 -1626) was an English Renaissance composer known for his lute works. This edition of the score was published by Diana Poulton, and includes a transcript of the original French Tablature as well as the grand staff.
French Tablature is much like modern tablature, in that it shows the horizontal lines representing the lute strings, however it used letters to represent frets instead of numbers.

Beautiful. Was going to have a go of this with my guitar but it looks like the lute can play the far lower notes on the bass clef. Is that the case? I can probably find this for guitar anyhow. Lovely piece.

Thank you! Most guitar sheet music is played an octave lower than written so that it fits on a single treble staff better. Makes it easier to read than on the grand staff. The score in this video is not transposed, so its an accurate representation of the guitar. Low E on the guitar is one ledger line below the bass clef.

@@MichaelPillitiere Ok. How did I not know this? I am suitable embarrassed. The low E (6th string) is one ledger line below the bass cleff. I have never noticed that. I've only ever played music such that the lowest line on the treble cleff is 6th string E on the guitar. It's all for convenience. All I can say is... lol!
