Nice! I had this happen the other day and did this very thing, although I didn't know that's what I did until now. I missed the last rep on the second set, rested longer, and came back with a more explosive approach and got all five reps of the 3rd set. This is a good lesson in mindset.

Be 70 this yr. 200 lb OHP, 330 Bench & 315 for rep. Rack Pulls 405x5 with Hernias and all. life long natty No TRT ! Just me and old school training. Still getting Stronger. You can always get stronger than you are. When I grab that iron bar I'm an old man. And When I get done lifting I feel Great. I feel young again. Full of vigor and vitality. Virility too. Talked the Mrs into joining gym. The transformation in less than 6 months is amazing. Muscle tone, complexion, sparkle in her eyes. I started back lifting about 3 yrs ago after a decade of being an old dude putting in my time and withering away. Then I was told Grandkids were on the way. So I had to rejuvenate myself. I Stopped smoking, heavy drinking and got a home gym. I knew what to do.. Been at it ever since. Lift Hard and Heavy 🏋

Your current lifts are my goals. I'm 64, post Cancer, chemo, surgeries, Total Knee Replacement and Ankle fusion, all in the last few years. I'm currently benching 225, OHP 180, squat 225, and deadlift - er... working on Romanian Deadlifts to strengthen my back, glutes and hamstring. My ultimate goal is 3, 4 , 5. 315 bench, 405 squat, 495 deadlift.

I’m 72. After years of irregular training ...on and off...hitting it hard followed by months/ years of no training, 4 months ago I restarted and I’m going regularly.., mornings ....at about 5:15 for about 40 minutes. I took it easy the first month or so and then started to fire it up. Lately I’m amazed at how powerful I feel. It’s coming back. You are so right, Greysteel. Old guys can workout and see success. I’m 185#, 5’10” , still working as a carpenter/contractor. My confidence and attitude are advancing along with the physical improvements. I’m benching 205 at a max, on the way to 250.....I hope. I’m not going to go into lots of numbers here. My obvious point is that it’s so worth the work to recover and improve at an age when many have resolved to take it easy. I’m more focused on good eating , primarily making sure to eat enough. Your advice, humor, passion and long experience backed with phenomenal knowledge of nutritional chemistry and ability to communicate it to your audience is greatly appreciated. I’m looking forward to continued success and I’m following your channel as a subscriber. Semper Fidelis Dave Heitman

I wonder if this is because that sticking point position is a mechanically disadvantaged one compared to the lower and upper positions. So exploding out of the bottom takes advantage of the stronger lower position and gives the bar momentum to continue moving through the weaker middle position.

I've recently started focusing on getting the bar above my head and my body under the bar as fast as possible on my Press. Whenever I miss is because I was lazy at the bottom and the bar went in front instead of up and back

Yep. That's classic.

I'll give that a shot tomorrow -- international chest day. It's a psychological trick. Other tricks I use -- embodying Ronnie Coleman and screaming in a high pitched voice -- LIGHTWEIGHT! Also, remembering a recent online argument and raging through the press brings almost super human strength.

I do deadlifts. I noticed when going heavy, I sometimes go slow. If I keep my mind moving the bar, it goes up slowly. It goes up. I hurt later.

Interesting that overhead press is not used in competitive power-lifting event contests. Still a good exercise!
@DavidLee-cw6ci3 ай бұрын
Used to be used in the Olympics but there was too much cheating. You can lean right back and turn it into a bench press.

I grind. I've never been explosive. I seem to be built to build a head of steam. My saving grace is I'm good at building force over time. My bench is adequate but my press has been stuck for a long time. I can manage a 1rm of 225 but rep 200. And it's hard. Really hard. It's a humbling lift.
@GreySteel2 жыл бұрын
But a gift. And a 225 bench is not chopped liver. I can't do that. Cut yourself a huss. Thanks for watching, man.

Great explanation, at 54 I really need to build muscle and strength. Thin arms and push-ups of 20 on knees are weak. I have a bench and barbell at home 13.8kg total, do I lock arms out or lighten barbell? Atm I randomly do as many reps as can. Thanks Melbourne Australia:)

Which rep? Thumbnail is just a posed picture; I had to stand there with it, so it's a training bar loaded with Fake Plates. Other reps include 95, 135, 150 (I think) and 165. The biggest bench in this video is 240, if memory serves. Um....does that help?

I have been powerlifting for about 18 months and bench press is the one I have been stuck on. I'll give this a go, but my question is whether I will get past the sticking point in a competition where you must pause at the bottom and wait for the referee to call 'press'. I find that is my true sticking point and I haven't been able to improve much at all.
@GreySteel2 жыл бұрын
If you're competitive and this is happening, I would Rx pause benches. Thinking explosive off the bottom will always be critical, though.

@@GreySteel Thanks! I will try that!

Because i was always interested in PL, i have always paused the BP.....so when starting the Press, paused it too. Any reason for bouncing the Press? Can still strict press 225 @185 and 55 years old, so not unhappy with it, but always looking for better technique
@GreySteel2 жыл бұрын
A rebound off the bottom in the press lets you move weight faster, so you can lift more, so you can get stronger. I have nothing against a strict military press, but I want to lock as much weight over my shoulders as I can.

Shouldn’t you be resting the bar on your upper chest before pressing? Why are you starting with the bar several inches above your chest? Cuts out so much range of motion, so can it actually be considered legit?
