Question: This is Theodore from the Palm Springs California area. I lift regularly at a local CrossFit gym. I like the regular Coach & am fairly comfortable with the daily WODs. Although, they are not consistent with the Starting Strength program. I try to mirror the SS program as closely as possible. The problem is that the Coach refuses to get an AED for the gym. He finds it comical that we should have one. I believe that’s it’s a state law in California that we have one. We have approximately 100 athletes that use this facility. I am considerably older than the other participants in that I am 73 years old. I have noted that the Coach has recently invested several thousands of dollars in other trining devices. (Usually Rogue) I like the Coach and do not want to be considered a “crybaby” or problem child. I have brought this issue up several times only to be dismissed” & told that should anything happen he will call the fire department. I have a friend, a former CrossFit coach that is now a Firefighter. His wife is an emergency room nurse. They both agree that we should have an AED on site. Do you think I’m over reacting or should we in fact get an AED before any further purchases are made. Thank you for your opinion/response. Theodore Payne

Gyms should have AEDs. It's a no-brainer.

@@GreySteel Thank you Sir! Hopefully I can get him to come around before I change gyms. The Coach is a very nice guy, unfortunately he does not see the seriousness of this issue. Thanks 🙏🏻

@@theodorepayne9663 ask him to imagine how he would feel if somebody had a cardiac arrest, and the family asked why a potentially life-saving measure was not present in the gym. Do you know what the incidence of cardiac arrest is? By incidence, I mean the frequency in a population? The incidence of cardiac arrest in the population is 100%. EVERYBODY has at least one cardiac arrest.

I love your book and have been following your program as best I can. I'm 54 and am starting to feel better than I ever have. I feel I need in personal coaching to get these lifts done properly, as I feel I'm putting too much pressure on my back doing deadlifts. I live over an hour from Portland, OR, which is the closest I can find any coaches that look decent. The gym I go to is too small and crowded to set up a camera for online coaching. Every coach in the Columbia Gorge where I live seems to be into Crossfit style training so I don't want that. The closest Starting Strength gym is 90 minutes away from me. Any tips on how to find a coach that will teach me the proper way? Thanks for all you do!
@GreySteel
@GreySteel 11 ай бұрын
The SSG that is 90 minutes away should allow you to purchase consults. Go in for a tune-up once a quarter. Too small for a camera?!? THat's pretty tight quarters, my friend.

@@GreySteel Thanks for the reply! Yes, it is a tiny Snap Fitness in a tiny strip-mall. It sucks but that's life in a small town. I'm lucky they have a squat rack. I tried setting up a tripod once and it was not happening. I told myself if I stick with it for six months I'll buy a proper rack and weights for my garage. Three months to go! I'll check with Starting Strength Beaverton for a consult. I'll time it with a Costco run. I love the book, it was just what I needed!

I'm still at it. I haven't figured out how to do the coaching thing yet, but a small gym opened up close to me that is open 24/7 and there is nobody in there when I work out so I should be able to set up a camera. I never progress as fast or far as I want to but the fact that I can squat 3x5 at 315 make me the strongest I've ever been in my life at 54!@@chadlloyd1807

Hi Dr. Sullivan. Have you ever considered opening up other Grey steel gyms across the country? I'm a masters kinesiology student at SIU and see a massive need in areas like these. I train folks over 50 years old at a local fitness center. We do all the main lifts and results have been exceptional. I understand this as do you, but people keep asking why there isn't more gyms that can offer this type of service to 50+ year olds. Do you just suggest a starting strength gym? I think grey steel is a fantastic name and see a great spot in southern Illinois where it would be successful. Just a thought. You do great work and I spread the word to people over the age of 50 whenever I can. Today one of my 66 year old male lifters deadlifted 225x3! He started at 240 lbs bodyweight and is now down to 218 but significantly stronger. All health markers are way up. Thank you for being such a great resource!

Where do you train people in Southern IL? I would love to get a consultation. I’m in St. Louis and have been following this program for three months now in my home gym. I’ve been afraid to do deadlifts until I get some coaching on my form.

Hey Sully, gave another copy of your book to people here. You wouldn't know how to find local gyms here in new england to help train seniors right? I have a few seniors who wants the training but can't find gym like yours. I was providing some with my own help but I don't have time anymore.

Any info on lifting after reverse shoulder replacement? About 6 weeks out, probably still 8 weeks out until strength work? Dr willing to work with me, but don't know of any body that is lifting with this procedure?

I think I recall you did a video where you suspected that bench press would strengthen forearm bones because of the "compression strengthens bone" meme Wouldn't heavy walkouts or heavy partials be theoretically useful for bone gainz then? The trouble would be measuring progress of course

We train people with total knees all the time. Total knee is a reason to squat, not a reason not to squat.

@@bobman7881 I cant give you specific Rx online without directly coaching you, but we usually find that it's the bone that wears out (from lack of loading), not the prosthesis. Consider getting a coach.

Yes of course it can. But unilateral varicosities and edema suggest thromboembolic disease, which is an acute contraindication to training. Diagnosis of CHF is not an acute contraindication to training unless it is fulminant and decompensated. We train people with CHF all the time. We do NOT train people with suspected DVT.
