You want 830 bucks for a hatchet? At Harbor freight they have one a bit cheaper (7 bucks) and when you're splitting kindling I doubt you could tell the difference.

There are debates in this comment section, but there is a demand for "pre war" steel. Not just in small amounts, they use it large machinery too. It would be worth cashing out a few thousand dollars and buying new steel so that steel can be made into Xray machines etc.

Just FYI. Trench lighters were made out of whatever the troops could lay their hands on to make them from using just whatever tools that happened to be at hand, usually just a knife and one or 2 hand tools.

Tim, I ordered a lighter yesterday. I don’t even smoke tobacco. I have chatted with you in the past. I am an old wore out Texas rancher. I have a forging shop right off a large ranch shop. Currently I have flu. Last night I dreamt that you had showed up at my ranch and was working in my shop! You were speaking Spanish and Tex-Mex to the ranch hands. You acclimate quite well. The flu takes a mind on strange journeys sometimes. ¡Su Amigo Siempre! Looking forward to the lighter.

So thats non-radioactive steel -- made before the atomic age. Minuscule amount of radioactive particles in the air from atomic tests get forged into the metal. Ppl salvage WWII ships for this stuff to sell to make extremely sensitive tools for medical equip and such.

If anyone didn’t get a chance to get one but wants one, I’m selling an extra that I was gonna give as a Christmas gift. Listed one on eBay as “trench lighter ww1 handmade” Not trying to profit, not trying to scalp, I’m selling at a loss because I have one anyways and want someone else to have the chance at it 👍

I have one similar to the lighter you made, it belongs to my great grandfather, full brass body, "1911 England" is etched on it's bottom, the only difference is that the striker wheel is mounted on the top of a brass tube containing the flint and the spring, the tube is then inserted into the lighter from the top which makes it removable. Enjoyed the whole video. . Greetings from India. .

It is indeed a beautiful form! I can’t help but think that poking the hole for the handle (like you have done) would be stronger than even the best welding. But you’re the blacksmith I’m sure yours would be strong either way. ❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿😎

You can patina an existing lighter by fuming it with white vinegar. You will need to clean the brass well. Steel wool, brillo, some cleanser like soft scrub to take off any tarnish. Then put some vinegar in a jar. Put the brass insert in the jar supported over the vinegar. It should not be in the vinegar. You only want the fumes. It will slowly patina over a day or two. It may take longer of its in a cold area like a garage.

I actually just did this with mine before seeing this. If anyone is wondering, there is a very easy to use product called “brass black” that will give any brass a super old worn look. It’s essentially what he’s doing here but he’s probably just using an acid/bluing solution. Just apply it and wipe it off. Use it on guns all the time, especially when restoring antique firearms, or making custom built muzzle loaders look authentic It doesn’t actually make the brass black unless you do many coats. It just gradually wears more and more and you can choose where it looks best
