I'm curious, might it make sense to use a form while punching, to constrain the sides while punching the exact handle hole size/shape you want? This way it doesn't need to have bulging sides pushed back in causing the eye hole to deform. I'm not a blacksmith, but just a viewer wondering if there's a reason not to do this. Love the vids, also you forgot your outro, keep the forge lit. (;

please excuse my ignorance, but couldn’t you drill a hole in the plate that the punch is welded too and plug weld on the back side? Causing the punch to be supported on the backside also, similar to a rivet.

I enjoy watching you make some really strange and good items. What I would like to know. Is how do you make any money? This is because we see you spending days on making something to re make it again. We do not see anybody else working in your shop. With all that power you use and running the forges heat and energy. It must cost you thousands of dollars $$$$ So, my question. It's an honest question and meant as a question only and not a dig. How do you make any money?

I had a though as well. what if you made up a small drift the size of the handle eye you want and incorporate that into the upsetter die making the peen end. that way the eye could not deform as you press the peen into the hammer.

If you watch at 4:30, the whole head moves backward away from the pinch for the peen, meaning you can't have a fixed eye punch in the same operation as the pinch.

@@Bobs-Wrigles5555 if you place the fixed eye punch at the point where it ends up after the squeeze and let the peen of the hammer move instead of the body moving it would work just fine. would it not?
@Bobs-Wrigles5555
@Bobs-Wrigles5555 Жыл бұрын
@@crazychupacabra4449 I don't think so, the top and bottom of the pieces that pinch the peen need to be fixed in alignment in the upsetter, otherwise the peen doesn't come out correctly, meaning the hammer head has to move away from the pinch and the eye can't be done at the same time. I believe Tim's first attempts had a back stop which didn't allow the head to move and the pinch didn't work right.

Low hydrogen root run when welding the punch?
@Labrador_Forge

He just went tig all the way, so technically yes they are low hydrogen. Generally when referring to low hydrogen in welding it is for smaw or stick welding

I’m not through the video yet but why not make a jig for the upsetter that makes the peen and punches the hole all in one action? Seems pretty simple to design something like that.
