So much work, so much money spent on this thing and no airlockers on it in the end...so painful. What a shame from the clients side... "Ho! I don't need lockers!" Yea, nobody does until you get stuck when a tricky situation comes and create an emergency for yourself...

Yeah could've dropped an ATB in there for the same money as the 4-pin.

@@Leo-dk4wethat would be a very very bad idea
@Leo-dk4we13 күн бұрын
Ah, would that cause too much strain or shock loading on the whole assembly?
@MegasquirtUK13 күн бұрын
Absolutely - an ATB or locker would increase internal strain on the chain that drives the unit and also put massive internal loading on the pinion woodruff keys on drive gear - that’s why 6 wheel drive through and are open diffs - and all these units of various are actually quite delicate 😬😂

To reduce the chance of crown wheel bolts backing out do you think there's merit in running longer crown wheel bolts with a spacer under the head? Could give some more strain/elongation in the bolt to maintain clamping
@MegasquirtUK2 ай бұрын
No. Any sort of "Spacer" adds potential for issues, sometimes where you have to use them you just have to, that includes most washers flat or spings old technology. The standard CW Bolts tend to stretch, and then when loose shear off, or if overload shear anyway even when tight. As you go up in Bolt strength 8.8 > 10.9 > 12.9 etc strength increases but so does brittality (Look up Glass bolt paradox). FTC5150 are pretty good, flanged head so larger surface area, and a serated head to bite into the steel etc, but these can shear as brittle. Nordlocks are a clever option, serations 2 x sides and a cam locking system, and as here NLX are alos domed giving a spring washer additive too. Length is not as crucial, if the bolt shears thats the point where the Center mets the CW, stretching is due to overload and weaker bolt, what we have here is the best of what we think we can do, ATBs also being machined out of way tougher / harder steel than other diffs due to the 12 x Cylinders the gears run it mean FTCs don't really bite into the metal of the ATB. Nordlocks do as the metal made is tougher so the serations are harder and bite better than FTCs. Bolt technology has moved massively over the last few years and continues to do so .............as have locking compounds which we also use special stuff.........

@@nigelbarker4044@nigelbarker4044 If I put a thicker thrust washer, assuming it is 0.6mm and change it to a 1mm one, will the assembly tend to become locked internally as if it were a “lock”? or not? what happens?

What's your thoughts on SAE 85W-140 to API GL-5? In a lot of countries you cannot get SAE 90 at all, only SAE 80W-90 or SAE 85W-140. I also know Penrite do an SAE 110 (upper half of the pre-2005 SAE 90 band) to API GL-4.

Having had those std bolts walk out and shear (in the middle of the main junction of a smll town) this is an excellent idea. Spending the dosh on the locker/cwp it does seem a no brainer. Mind you Dave did laugh at me once when I told him I had a 4.6 for many years and had only just bust the std 2pin. He said if I drive that gently then the shafts, cwp & 4pin were guaranteed for my life 😂

What happens then, if you whop a Harrop Eaton ‘E’ Locker in there instead of an ARB? I haven’t looked into ARB personally, however, there must be something to be said for the Salisbury Eaton ‘E’ as they’re sitting around the $4,000.00 mark, as opposed to other diffs at $2,500.00 for Eaton ‘E’s… you’re obviously getting something more for your buck?
@MegasquirtUK Жыл бұрын
Not really. Yes they are a fortune, but again look at the cross shaft size on the "E" Vs a Dana 60 forged one piece unit. The "Salisbury" / Dana 60 (and that just the centre they didn't buy the drive gears and shafts, so they missed a huge trick there - NOTHING aftermarket can be fitted to be as strong - more traction yes with TruTracs Detriots Lockers etc, but fundementally weaker than a standard Dana 60 / LR salisbury center.
