That looks like a handful. I solo my 570mk2 but I don't even try the spin. It's huge and hard to fly with two people. But it's so fast. I might get the nerve one day. Need a water bag incase I cap.

Thanks! Hard to tell who was ahead. Probably Randy, but we took different strategies - he tacked East early, we stayed on. Our hope was to hold or not lose to much ground to him upwind, then get ahead downwind, where we have speed and angle on a stock f18. But. To finish first, first you have to finish! Lol

Love this long version even more than the short one! Looks like you had very steady winds which are a rare thing here in Seattle on Lake Washington. It's 22 miles long and winds shift ALL the time with swirling gusts that are double the baseline wind speed. Makes for short exciting flights, but few long rides. Last week, however, the stars all aligned and I had a foiling day very similar to what you show in this video...including the dunks. Tomorrow 6/26 the forecast resembles last week so I'm keeping my fingers/toes/eyes crossed. LOL. And THIS time I hope my GoPro works properly. Not one frame from last week. :( BTW, how do you attach your camera to the sprit? I like the view you get!

What's the correct course of action at about @2:55 or @3:30 when you're flying but the boat starts heeling too far to windward? should you sheet out to get more power and/or bear away? I'm currently learning to sail the UFO in Berkeley, CA
@louisclark9685
@louisclark9685 5 ай бұрын
it looks like at ~6:15 you heeled to windward but then managed to catch it. I'm wonder if the windward capsize is sometimes unavoidable in a lull? Great sailing by the way thanks for uploading!
@MartinHoffFoilingSailboats
@MartinHoffFoilingSailboats 5 ай бұрын
So you are heeling too much to windward. Typically there are 3 reasons - you've pinched too much! bear off, _ease a bit to ensure flow on the LW side of the sail_, crunch abs to reduce leverage - you've overtrimmed and stalled flow on the LW side of the sail - _ease a bit_ to try to re-establish flow, trim to lift butt out of water, crunch abs to reduce leverage - you're in a lull, ease to re-establish flow on the LW side of the sail, trim to lift your butt out of the water 🙂 , crunch abs to reduce leverage So what you do depends a bit on a theory you have in your mind of why it's happening. Lull and overtrimmed are in a way the same. And you can see that I sometimes ease and trim again. Sometimes it works. The best way to do the 'ease for flow, trim for lift out of water' is to ease fast, and trim slow. I am rusty and not necessarily a good example of doing that here -- instead of learning bad habits from me, there are some old videos of Nathan Outteridge teaching maneuvers on a moth, and if you look at how he does the ease followed by a trim, it's art.
@MartinHoffFoilingSailboats
@MartinHoffFoilingSailboats 5 ай бұрын
@@louisclark9685 6.15 to 6.30 shows a moment with good breeze, I could feel the breeze so I knew I could trim for power to lift me up. But I was also worried about stalling the sail so you can see I trim and follow it by an ease...

Martin, Looks like you were changing the rudder angle there at about the 34 second mark. Were you changing it for more (+) o less (-) lift? It seemed like you were foiling pretty well, then the bows got 'dunked' and the boat slowed down a lot. That is when you made the adjustment so curious about it. I'm still working on all the fine tuning of my UFO #330 and rudder AoA is one of those. Larry
@MartinHoffFoilingSailboats
@MartinHoffFoilingSailboats Жыл бұрын
This was some time ago! Looking at it, I think the rudder angle was ok for me sitting on the middle pad when foiling. I then reduced the rudder angle so I'd be slightly bow up. You can see that after that, once foiling I scoot forward to the front pad. My theory is that having weight forward once you are foiling is more prone to crashing... but faster!
@larryowens7023
@larryowens7023 Жыл бұрын
@@MartinHoffFoilingSailboats I've seen the same thing about more speed when I move forward, but don't feel it's made me more prone to crashing. (Or maybe the crash and resultant waterboarding has just made me forget!? LOL) Last week we had great winds, but they were blustery and not steady. Made it hard to 'fine tune' the boat for that.

@MartinHoffFoilingSailboats
@MartinHoffFoilingSailboats Жыл бұрын
Standard aluminium. Does anyone offer a carbon mast for this boat? I don't love the aluminium mast, to be honest, but it's well matched to the sail. And the fleet has developed a good understanding of it. Diamond tension is king. A tapered carbon mast would be more automatic, forgiving, and probably require less fiddling with diamonds.

In general you need to run more lift, if the foil cavitate when you put more lift in just sand all the scratches out, not heaps more in the stronger breeze but in the lighter stuff it’ll get you flying earlier, then you can flatten it out with body weight, that being said, when in the breeze you guys were moving along very well, keep it up!
@MartinHoffFoilingSailboats
@MartinHoffFoilingSailboats 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the encouraging words! Yes we agree with your comment - that was our exact top debrief note: More rake, crew more forward if needed, fly higher - but we need our foils mended/refinished; they have some dings and flaking off at the trailing edge that are well past "it'll buff out". Our alibi (!) is that this was a quick outing on the Z foils set after 2+ months of not foiling - we had a pause in our sailing followed by couple weeks training on C foils. As crew, I set the rake a tad timidly. Helm didn't have his trapeze harness, was wearing a way oversize adult (he's 12 and skinny). Long story short - not our top form, but a good fun run.
