since it seems the full video will never survive the youtube strike system, I will have to do with this incredibly interesting video essay instead. Incredibly fascinating excerpt as always :)

I like how Disney seems to have absolutely no clue how to save the mcu while the fckn whole internet is full of one big opinion, why mcu fans hate the new kind of marvel movies ..

You can see that the mcu was created by men who were marvel fans, when they were young. And now the bosses of the mcu are feminists 😅

4:36 Johnathan Majors' outburst just proves some people think playing characters on screen somehow helps 'their people,' all while boosting their own egos.

Paul isn't a Hero. He is no villain either. He is indeed an anti-hero. The guy who becomes a monster or starts to go down a monstrous path because it is necessary for the good of humanity. He still serves humanity, in becoming what is necessary and that is, in his case just not the good guy. Much like Kain in the Legacy of Kain series. Both of them refuse the necessary sacrifice. For different reasons but with the same intended outcome. All to give the world the bitter taste of that terrible illusion; Hope.

To be fair, the White US government hunted the bison nearly to extinction just to force the Plains Indians onto reservation under threat of starvation. It was not the Plains Indians who caused the near extinction of bison.

What **REPEATEDLY** baffles me is that these “directors,” “actors,” and “content creators” here in the third decade of the TWENTY FIRST CENTURY **actually** seem to BELIEVE that “female empowerment” in Mary Sue characters lacking any dramatic tension or characterological struggles or flaws is a NEW, “INNOVATIVE” phenomenon in Hollywood films…..It is *stunning* that a privileged, seriously overpaid actor with little to zero contact with the workaday, 8-to-6 reality most of us inhabit can *un-ironically* think “their” (sic) mere “representative” presence in a *Marvel* film does ANYTHING AT ALL substantive toward rectifying real inequality and other social problems endemic in the real world from which Hollywood does all it can to insulate “them.”

I have a request, Platoon…Could you give your lovely voice the task of covering Death Cab’s “I’ll Follow You Into the Dark”? Think of it as a paean for all of us who’ve lost so much, we’ve vowed never, *never* to let our supercilious, insouciant masks slip again for sentiment…

I am seldom “sincere,” yet just this once, Platoon, I have to say this is truly a beautiful rendition of one of my childhood favourite songs….If, perchance, you ever performed near me, I could quite possibly feel motivated to put down my copy of *PARADISE LOST* (teaching it in my seminar this fall); get my languid self moving about; and attend. You are, delightfully surprisingly, worth it!

They just need to write the women the same way they would men. And men the same way they would write woman. The problem I see if them still filtering everything through binary gender roles.

This was fantastic. It almost makes me forgive you for referring to American football as “gay rugby” in the Echo video. I have been trying to come up with a similar label for SOCCER but so far the best I’ve been able to do is “gay lacrosse.” Not a perfect comparison, but feel free to let me know if you can think of something better. Also, please sing more.

To say that Paul Atreides is NOT a hero is just as bad and as wrong as those who say he is a hero. The truth is, both sides can be argued and he's somewhere in between. He has moments of absolutely amazing heroism and moments of the opposite. To sum it all up as simply either being a hero or NOT being a hero is totally simplistic thinking as is trying to categorize & label him (either "hero" or "not a hero"), that's also a sign of simplistic, narrow thinking.

I will say the first book is perhaps a little bit too subtle at times with Paul, and the ending is very triumphant. I can see why the movie changed Chani to be much more skeptical, and Paul to lay it on thick that he's the duke and the son of Leto. It could make a smoother transition to Doon Messiah

How the hell did they do the strong female protagonist so perfectly well with black widow, then screwed up every subsequent attempt they made? They had already created a perfect model for these characters and then just threw it away.

Meh, I think you missed out on the point. The danger of messiahs was one of many lessons Herbert was trying to convey. In fact, only Dune Messiah was based on that message. Dune itself wasn't, and neither were Children of Dune or God Emperor of Dune. Paul was the hero of Dune, and he was even the her of Dune Messiah. He was the warrior hero in Dune for obvious reasons, but in Dune Messiah, Paul sacrificed himself so that his children's future would be ensured. He didn't have to walk into the desert, blind, but he did it for his children's sake. Sacrifice makes a hero, and Paul sacrificed everything.

I think that walking into the dessert was Paul's cowardice. Paul knew what needed to be done to undo his mistake, he just didn't want too.
