Nice vid. You stressed the importance of not refocusing, but I think it also needs to stressed that the metering should also be locked if you're not in manual, since exposure changes are just as detrimental as focus changes when it comes to stitching a pano that looks good. Most cameras have a metering lock button but few people use it even though many shoot in shutter or aperture priority rather than manual when it comes to dogos. I like your idea of a pano as a situation saver when you're just not quite set up right but the moment happens anyway.

I have several clients that show dogs, and they're very particular about not having eye colour altered. My problem dogs have the blackest fur and very dark eyes and this is a characteristic they're judged on, but in studio enough light to put detail into their coat tends to shine through their eyes and give them a strange red colour cast. I usually try dodging and burning their eyes to take as much of this out as I can without damaging the catch lights etc. Any ideas on this front?
@heathermtaylor7683Ай бұрын
@daemon1143 - Hi, I can see why you asked about 'Wylfen's eyes'. I usually shoot outside. On occasion, I do use OCF (Godox AD200) with HSS. From what was being suggested in the video, might it be possible to de-saturate just the reds (LR post processing, as demonstrated here) to see if that nullifies the colour cast? I'm sure Inspawration will help with a solution in due course. All very best wishes, Heather.
@daemon1143Ай бұрын
@@heathermtaylor7683 Not a bad suggestion and not one I'd thought of previously, taa.
@InspawrationPhotographyАй бұрын
@@daemon1143 I mean, I don’t do studio so advice here with a grain of salt. But whenever I see colour casts, I use the opposite colour. So if they’re looking red, I would be adding some green for example. Obviously if you need to darken them to bring them to the correct brightness then you’d need to use some other tools for that too. Another option could be taking the photo a little darker and bringing out the fur detail in editing so that the light doesn’t have to be as strong, since the ISO is so low in studio anyway, it’s not like it’d cost much in terms of noise to just brighten the fur a little in post, if it makes the eyes more natural looking. Not sure if this helps but that’s where I’d be starting!
@MrSimonj1970Ай бұрын
I'd recommend trying a bigger light source, perhaps close to the lens axis, even if it's just fill light. You need the right placement, not more power IMO

I have a Champagne German Shepherd with very dark eyes - I have never thought to use a larger radial filter over her face and then use a smaller, separate filter over her eyes - I usually just do Wylfen's eyes. @@TheWescombe how long is a piece of string 😉 if I’m far away, all of the dog will be in focus. If I’m doing head and shoulders, then probably just the eyes. Which is fine by me. I don’t care if the nose is out of focus. That isn’t where I want my audience to look 😉

Recently my cousin lent me his 70-200mm f4 lens. Having been only using 35 and 50 in the studio, the 70-200 allows me to take pictures outdoors for a better shot. I wish I could get a 2.8 or 1.8 in the future, as I do struggle with ISO with the f4 having to push it up to 3200-6400, but it's still nice having a 70-200 to play with.

What you say about the camera body and the lens is absolutely right. I use a Nikon D3 (2007 ancient lump: £300 second hand) with the latest Nikon 70mm-200mm F2.8E FL ED VR2 (£2,000). Absolutely stunning lens and very, very fast with beautiful bokeh.

It's crazy right?! I think camera companies do such a good job marketing cameras, and encouraging people to get new cameras, when what people should be putting their attention toward (more often than not) is a better lens! NOT a new camera with another kit lens!
@heathermtaylor76832 ай бұрын
@@InspawrationPhotography - Could not agree more. The D3 has its limitations being a 2007 body but with the newest and best 70mm-200mm lens it shines. Another great video and I am so pleased you have highlighted the importance of good quality lenses over the newest, latest camera body. Thank you 😊
@b77302 ай бұрын
The 135mm perspective is always so special. One thing to remember is, that you can get the "same" look with any 135mm lens (from any manufacturer) but you won´t get the same autofocus performance. Static shots are no problem but e.g. shots of a running dog (or any moving subject) are usually achieved only with the higher end, and more expensive lenses. That Sony 85mm 1.8 is really, really good for the price.
@heathermtaylor76832 ай бұрын
Absolutely correct. Nikon bodies certainly don't respond well with third party lenses when shooting with Auto-Focus and using the AF back button - definitely something to bear in mind.

@@timtog the 135mm is an extremely fast lens! The 70-200 ii is also great. I know Chris van riel who is a friend of mine & action photographer who has been doing a series of webinars thru my site, uses the 135mm rather than a 70-200mm. So the 135mm is definitely a great lens for action if you can be close enough (it’s not ideal for agility or disc etc necessarily as you’re a bit too far away, but then even 200mm can be a bit short in that case!)
