Great Video. And I've never been so confused in my life. Sort of. Unfortunately, most of us don't cruise as often as you. Too bad the data has a month limit. I used to use some app where I bought minutes. Can't remember the name . Left the minutes on it with my old phone. But that was for calling my UK cruise customers here on land. Then I just started using WhatsApp.

I'm sorry. I just returned from Wonder of the Seas a week ago. I purchased the 5GB plan. eSim was installed on iPhone 12 running the latest firmware. It did not work as expected. My phone was set up exactly as instructed. On day 1 I was able to send and receive messages when I stepped outside on the deck. I can't do anything from my cabin, including connecting to the GigSky website. My usage was less than 0.5 GB after day two. On day two my wife decided to post 3 photos on Facebook. The upload started when we had access to WiFi on the land. The WiFi was very slow. It was about 70% uploaded when rain forced us back on the cruise ship. I assumed that GogSky would take over. I stayed outside, but the upload stopped at 72%. I finally gave up and went back to the cabin. The next day the upload was still showing 72% but my data usage went from 0.47 GB to 4.6 GB. I finally gave up on it and purchased $24 a day cruise WiFi which was also very slow, but at least it worked. If it worked for you great, but I wasted $75.

I tried my first eSim data plan in Ireland this past July (through Arlo) and it was great. GigSky seems great for cruising and I am going to try it for our February Odyssey OTS and if it works well, our northern Europe cruise in June. This could be a great savings over onboard wifi for my basic Facebook & Insta browsing.

Another great video Brandon. I caught a glimpse of your camera in the mirror. If you don't mind me asking what type of camera you use?
@TheWeekendCruiserКүн бұрын
I actually don't use the most advanced camera. I am one of those people who loves to set everything on "auto" and just hit record. This is the Sony ZV-1 which is an older model but designed for vloggers as the screen pivots around and you can see yourself. It's also very small for a fancy camera and well priced. They have some newer versions but this one has done me very well over the last three years.

When I buy an internet package for my wife and I (where we can use the devices at the same time) should I choose two packages or one package with 2 devices? I notice when I pick myself with 2 devices it is considerably cheaper than both of us with a package and one device each. Can we both surf and stream at the same time with one person and two devices?
@TheWeekendCruiserКүн бұрын
You always want to purchase all your devices under one package or account. This will give you the cheaper bulk pricing! Even though it is purchased on your account, you have the number of devices to use however you want and can easily share the log in information.

I used this on our last cruise and it worked fairly well for my first e-sim experience. There was some confusion on the initial purchase. I thought I was buying 1GB of data , which i thought was the recommended size for a 7 day cruise. In reality I bought a 7 day package with 1GB of data. I didn't read the email that came after the purchase (my bad) and I mistakenly activated it 2 days before the cruise which left the last two days of the cruise uncovered, but it wasn't a big deal as I ran out of data anyway. The only other "issue" I recall having was needing to disconnect from Gigsky to use the Royal Caribbean app. Overall, it worked well and was much cheaper than onboard WiFi for my needs.

Thank you for sharing your experience! I have thought about the "copy" element a few times and have thought about how to make a video on this topic. I don't think it is as much they are "copying" no more so than American Airlines copies Delta but the cruise ship industry is becoming commoditized and all the experiences are the same, just done slightly different based on the company. Fingers crossed this helps at least keep prices in check!

Orlando and Cape Canaveral are different places. How to you get to the port?
@TheWeekendCruiserКүн бұрын
Hey Lynne! They sure are different places and I truly wish we had better connection options from Miami to Port Canaveral. Once I get to Orlando, on any of the transit options, I take a ride-share to the port. Runs about $45 to $60 one way. Still winds up being cheaper than renting a car, parking, and gas.

It sure does! Only time it might not work well is when in port and it switches you to the land cell towers. When not docked, it switches to the ship's cellular at sea and no issue anywhere on the ship.

That is awesome and you can get some amazing deals there! Huge Value for they money! You will have two options, get off the ship with all the other guest in the morning and enjoy the port. Alternative, they will give you a meeting point on the ship for all B2B folks. You will meet here and once the ship has debarked all passengers (zero count) they will walk you off the ship, through customs, and then turn you around and walk right back on the ship. Here is a VERY old video I made on this in post covid times that provides more insight. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIKwdISfg9-VecU

@williamoday5735 күн бұрын
I used GigSky for the first time on Symphony of the Seas in September. I would give it about 4 stars out of 5 based upon my experience. We were in a balcony stateroom and our connection in the stateroom was very spotty. I would not have been able to sustain a phone call. My phone would connect periodically, download a few emails, and then the connection would drop again. I found that the service was better in public areas (such as Central Park, the area between the elevator lobbies, dining areas, Royal Promenade, etc.) I got 4G LTE speed when I was connected. And for some reason, while docked in the Bahamas the hotspot functionality didn't work (I opened a ticket with GigSky, who ultimately couldn't figure out why - it DID work while at sea). Keep in mind also that there will be a "gap" in coverage when the ship is roughly 12 miles off shore (either approaching or leaving land). I usually found that I had no coverage for 15 - 20 minute while the service switched from land based towers to Cellular at Sea or vice versa. I used just under 3GB of data over 7 days. Some credit card holders may qualify for additional discounts (explained on GigSky's website). I don't find this comparable to the internet service offered by Royal Caribbean, which provides unlimited data at fairly decent speeds, now that Starlink is ubiquitous, but it can be a supplement, and will give you connectivity both at sea and in ports. I work while cruising (I know, there are some people who simply cannot understand that, but it is either work while cruising, or work while staying at home, and I prefer to cruise more than just once or twice annually) so I need access to data without worrying about running out. I don't have an international cell plan, so it was nice to have service while in port using GigSky. But if you're going to use WiFi calling while on board, you might consider a land only GigSky plan, which would cost even less.

I've been using esims for data for the past year or so. It gets easier and less scary after the first time. Most of the guides are well thought out and detailed. This could be interesting on a longish cruise. I paid ~$300 on my last cruise for onboard Wifi and did like you, switched SIMs for the port days. I won't get into it much here as YMMV and there some small setup but Wifi calling and SMS may be possible depending on the carrier/device(I have Fi and a Pixel 7). On my cruise earlier this month, I was started by my phone starting to ring for an incoming call while on airplane mode in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. [It was mom. And nothing serious.]

Love Google Fi and my Pixel 8! I decided to skip the 9 this year. Yes, if you don't need tons of data, this is a great option! Wi-Fi on long sailings especially, can get very pricy!

This will depend on the amount of data they use. Though, if your job depends on it, having ship wifi and GigSky as a back-up option, might be well worth the money.

JCS, a sponsored video can be helpful and informative (as I believe this one is). I am proud that I have my first two sponsored videos with companies I respect and think other cruisers would enjoy learning about - the prior 353 videos, were not sponsored. Paid sponsorships are a part of YT and if I want to go full time and continue to deliver enjoyable content, sponsored content is a must. However, I commit to bringing solid companies that are a good fit for us cruisers, fit perfectly with the channel, and viewers can appreciate. I hope everyone can understand and respect this approach.

If you can't live without your phone for a few days DON'T cruise, our last cruise was only 7 days, and it was great, no social media no annoying emails just a relaxing cruise.
@TalonIV3 күн бұрын
I appreciate the perspective on disconnecting, but everyone has different needs and ways of relaxing. For some, staying connected provides peace of mind, especially when it comes to family or work obligations. The beauty of a cruise is that it offers various options for all preferences. So, while some may cherish the opportunity to unplug, others may find comfort in having access to their phones. We can all enjoy the cruise in our own way!
@TheWeekendCruiserКүн бұрын
Hey Andy, I think Talon gave a perfect response to this. GigSky is a great fit for people in-between the complete disconnect and over connected groups. I don't want to stream videos or be on social media all day (uses tons of data) but I do want my family to be able to get in-touch with me should something go wrong and unfortunately, it has while I have been on ships. So I am even more sensitive to at least being online.
