My motivation for solo hiking? I guess I enjoy the quiet and also the challenge of completing things by myself. When you're the only one there, everything is reliant on your as to your success or having to reattempt it again later. I wish I had taken more gas :P Had better accommodation / travel arrangements at the end. I stayed at a hotel up the road right across from the finish, but there was no shuttle or food there. So I finished the walk, and then hiked another several km up the road. It wasn't the best end to my day. This is where having a support person would have been great. Being collected at the end would have made a huge difference.

Given that you can only hike it in one direction, it’s disappointing that it isn’t managed better for hikers; the accomodation and food, but also where to leave vehicles, shuttles back to Apollo Bay are quite expensive unless you are lucky enough to time it that you can share the fee with others….., Its surprising that nobody has cornered that market. Maybe just not enough hikers throughout the seasons to make it viable???

@@iilipad2503 I took the Vline bus back to the start and from memory it was only about an hour. But the bus only runs every second day I believe. It was pretty cheap. But it leave around midday, so unless you leave very early and complete the last day by lunchtime, you need to find somewhere to stay for the night (which is what I did). Thankfully the caretaker/manager gave me a lift down to the bus terminal the following day. You are right though, it is a challenge.

Good review!, if you are all about helping people save money and learn some tricks in a future video regarding hammock camping i highly recommend learning to make your own ridgeline I made mine out of paracord and an adjustable grip hitch/knot. Also to stop water from getting on the hammock simply tying a short length of cord on the carabiners will direct any water running down the straps, onto the carabiner onto the floor (the underside of a wet hammock is not fun)
@bladesepicadventures7165
@bladesepicadventures7165 8 ай бұрын
Great tips!! I didn't know about ridgelines when I started out, so for the few dollars, I was happy to just buy one. Will any paracord work, or are there particular strengths(?) someone would need to use?
@GeoffNewell92
@GeoffNewell92 8 ай бұрын
@@bladesepicadventures7165 there are different strengths of paracord. I am using 4mm or 6mm for my ridgeline. In the hammock community the holy grail of cord to use is Dyneema (You might see people call it Amsteel but Amsteel is just cord made from Dyneema fibres in a particular braid). If you PM me id be happy to organise a call to have a chat and go into more detail and exchange tips :)

This crazy thing should be the official 'poster child' of the phrase "if it ain't broke don't fix it' ! There is not a single supportive reason to try to hold this fabric laden nightmare above a traditional Hammock. I've watched several videos of men touting this monstronsity and all looked absolutely foolish trying to get into this thing and forcing a cry about the comfort level which anyone can see is the least comfortable device to try and replace a 'no brainer' Hammock .
@13Voodoobilly69

You say that but yet every person that switched from a traditional hammock to an Amock all love them and would never go back. Getting into them is a learning curve and this guy hasn’t got there yet. Watch his part 2 video of his three day hike with the hammock, 34 minutes in you see him slipping into the hammock easily and the end review of the hike he loves the hammock and has traditional hammocks also. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yep this is true. I almost ate it a couple of times, but it didn't take long to get the technique down. The Amok is so much better (in my experience) than a traditional hammock. But you're right, if you love your traditional hammock, all power to you, stick to it :)

Brilliant review well made, I’ve been trying out my mates Amok 3.0 in the garden and had exactly the same issue as you. My thoughts were the same as yours that my Nemo tenso alpine xl was not rigid enough for this hammock, and you’ve confirmed it for me. I am thinking of purchasing the new Amok 5.0 xl and a Amok xl mat to go with it. I already have a DD frontline hammock which is great but not as spacious as the Amok and doesn’t allow you wake up overlooking beautiful scenery. I was wondering if the Tree straps you get with it are very long as they don’t seem to be on the Amok 3.0 that I tried.
