Jeff never managed to let go the failure of Project Titan He quickly scrambled a PVP game, and... success, GOTY but what now? Again Jeff never let go of Project Titan, so he wanted to build the Overwatch IP to become an MMO, he already got the PvP, so he was missing the PvE and all the systems in between to fully realize his MMO The PvE, imo, was always a problem of scope and refusing to expand the team. The missions that ended up realizing were too little too late, release the exact same thing in 2018-2019 and people would probably have been much more forgiving and you can say that you are building up from there, slowly but surely realizing PvE content instead of somehow trying to make a skill tree for every hero and somehow finishing that in time for a full release date, while keeping updated the PvP? Yes and No, Yes because the community has already the PvP and want the game to keep getting updates, and No because the development team were more focused and trying to realize the PvE but they themselves didn't realize that the PvP was already a successful game on its own and just needed to get updates, have a different team develop the PvE, that your suceful Live Service(they didn't realize or didn't wanted to admit this) PvP game is already good enough.

Relf is totally right at what he said at the start, and I think a game called “The Anacrusis” does exactly what Overwatch PVE wanted to do/could’ve been; PVE gameplay, with lots of hoards and special enemies, but you’re able to upgrade your character and give yourself game-changing/game-altering upgrades

Nothing? Really? Jeff’s grand vision for overwatch PVP culminated in bap brig orisa sigma. THOSE heroes embodied the direction he wanted to take ow in up until it’s abandonment. His entire crawl walk run philosophy was what killed the game. His team basically accidentally created a GOTY quality shooter, and instead of supporting it, Jeff decided that he’d rather work on his old failed project than an industry defining masterpiece. It takes a special kind of mishandling to drop GOTY off a cliff in just a couple years

with this in mind i'd wonder how much effect the success of the beta and initial release had. the PvP was a hit from the jump, people were pretty starved, especially the console scene which hadn't experienced a TF2 (i remember being partial to Gotham City Imposters back in middle school but that's beside the point). there was a pretty rapidly developing grassroots scene that incentivized Blizzard to focus on competitive play. content creators were taking off and they cultivated even hungrier fanbases to keep the kantent flowing. i honestly just don't think Team4 &/or Blizzard realized what kind of cultural phenomenon this IP would be in 2016

This game satified something competitively to me that pnly games like CS have for me before it.

I’ll add - only massive hubris would ignore a 2016 GOTY and not develop it… utter foolishness. They put minimal time into OW1 because they had no love for PVP… they resented it and wanted to fart around PVE world building for years on end sipping coffee.

This was before everything was expected to be live service. They planned on providing four years worth of updates and adding heroes before leading to something else. That’s normal. Now everything has to be WoW. Redevelop and iterate on the game for decades as it becomes unrecognizable to what it was. Realize that you will never be able to play Overwatch 1 again. They deleted it. If they will do it to 1, they could do it to 2. What’s next for Overwatch’s future? What if it turns into something you dislike? Not like you can just go back and play OW1.

I figured out in about 2022 that Jeff was the root cause of issues, not Kotick. Glad that history proved me correct. Jeff was just trying to rebuild his destroyed reputation after Titans failure. I’m sorry but there is no defending Jeff here on this. Kotick should have pulled OW1 from Jeff in 2018. And yes, Kotick is human waste but he was right in this case.
@ironman145811 сағат бұрын
I don't see it tbh. How is Kotick's baby the Overwatch League™ doing these days? He killed the pro scene with corporate garbage and flooded the game with microtransactions neither of which anybody asked for. Game doesn't exist without Kaplan's vision, the only thing Kotick did was leech off other people and ruin the esports. Jeff obviously was not perfect particularly for the pvp side of the game but to say history proved you right, uh no, just look at owl and the current state of pro level ow, its flopped exactly as hard as pve did. why did Kotick jump ship if he was doing so well? I don't think either can really be the "root cause of issues" there are so many layers and levels of issues with how the franchise was handled some of which are kaplans fault some of which are koticks, who even cares who's fault it was I just want the game to not be dog shit. but i just don't see what kotick did other than kill the pro scene with owl and flood the game with microtransactions, pay wall heroes behind battle pass etc. The game literally doesn't exist without Jeff so I can't see how he is the root cause of the problems unless you mean "we would not be hearing talking about this cause it literally wouldnt exist without his contributions" and the same could not be said about kotick

@@ironman1458Jeff didn’t want a PvP game - he looted it. Kotick was right the game should be split in development - Jeff starved OW1. All it was. OWL failed due in large part to not having enough development and that was Jeff’s fault not Koticks. Btw Kotick greenlit OW after Titans failure by Jeff. Between Titan and OW, Jeff literally blew 15 years of development - how can you not see this?
@afifkhan615111 сағат бұрын
@@ironman1458 Kaplan’s vision was NOT ow1. Kaplan’s vision was project titan II (which ended up coming true in a different way than expected). Ow1 was a total accident that kaplan’s team never managed to understand. Ow1 and owl suffered from the same cancer: terrible handling of exceptional ideas. While we don’t know exactly what would’ve happened, it’s obvious that the path to profitability would’ve been much easier if the game managed to retain the interest it had going into 2018. And what happened to that interest? It got killed and had its grave pissed on by the divine Jeff Kaplan and his team. This “grand vision” of Jeff’s, beyond the accidental conception of ow1, consisted of unfathomably slow and inconsequential content, degenerate heroes like orisa, Brigitte, Baptiste, and sigma. THOSE decisions killed ow1. And while the monetization model of owl was already questionable, there’s no doubt that the rapid decline of the ow ip after 2018 played a massive role in its dramatic falloff
@ironman145811 сағат бұрын
@@fractalelf7760 Well yes but the development not being split is not the only problem with the franchise so I don't think it makes sense to blame the entire failure of the franchise on Kaplan for that one aspect. Kaplan wanted to recreate titan, Kotick wanted a corporate esports scene and overwatch to become another CoD, they both failed miserably. I don't think either philosophy is the "root of the issues" it seems the problem are more so they were aiming for different goals and ended up failing on both fronts because their philosophies often clashed. I agree in hindsight they needed a separate team to work on PvP for overwatch 1 while jeff and the ow1 team focused on pve, I just don't see that as the "root issues" of the game cause there's so many other aspects which are entirely koticks fault like overwatch league/killing the pro scene and the monetization which nobody likes. I do agree with they needed to split development and Jeff was mistaken to pushback against this, I just don't see that as the "root issue" with the game I don't even know what you would call the root issues of the game when its one of the most hated franchises of all time on so many different levels and directions. Its not cause they didnt split development, theres a lot of reasons for the reception the game has and both kotick and kaplan as well as other community leaders played a part in it, I'm just not seeing how Kaplan is the root cause of the issues with the game because of that one bad decision, in my opinion its hundreds of bad decisions from so many different people that got us here not one bad decision from kaplan that caused all of the problems of the franchise. And it doesn't make sense to me to blame Kaplan because his grand vision for the game is literally on of the only things that got a lot of people who gave up on the game to give it another try. It wasn't owl that did it, it wasn't the microtrasnactions, it wasn't the battle pass, it was jeff's vision for pve, for a "redefined sequel" that got people to actually consider the game again, so I just can't understand how he is the root cause of the issues cause the only reason a lot of people even started to think about overwatch again was because of that vision. Yes they executed horribly, some of that is jeff's bad deicsion, to say he is the root cause of the issues of the franchise, I just don't see it, I don't think any one person can be to blame for the current state of the franchise its hundreds of bad decisions over years that got us here

@realth Great vid, and I think you are right about people being hit from multiple angles, but I also disagree that it has always been this way with the obnoxiousness of screen vomit. Specifically I'd call out Ram punches. That white flash on your screen is obnoxious and painfully bad. I have also missed very important stuff information on screen multiple times because someone dropped the Light of God blinding madness that is Juno ult on me. Juno ult is different from screen effects of course, but I wanted to bring up these two things from new heroes that as a Rein main who is often in the middle of the fight, trying to swing my hammer at flying, blinking, tp'ing, fading enemies, all while being booped around or just sent to the moon by junkrat mines, it needs changes. Ow1 was not this bad, the new animations Blizzard has added, the new heroes all having flashy movement abilities, all the boops, and the dumb stuff like your screen flashing are obnoxious screen vomit new to ow2.

I do have to appreciate how you try to stand for the average player experience. While high rank is important too, the average player typically gets ignored entirely in conversations like this. “Shut up and let the top 1 percent have their fun. If you don’t like how it feels where you are just grind comp every day to eventually have fun like us.” I have college, I have a job. I don’t have time to grind to top 100. I just like playing for an hour or two with friends. And I would like that experience to be tolerable just as much as high rank players want their experience to be tolerable. It is possible to make this game reasonably enjoyable for everyone if we work at it and hear each other out.

They need to quantify the tank role. Think about how Doomfist plays the game, then think about how Rein plays the game. Vastly different, no? Is it possible this major difference from tank to tank causes major inconsistencies in the gameplay experience? Yea, it do…. Perhaps tanks should have a set of characteristics the devs go by when developing tanks. Because Doomfist is just Genji with more HP….
@CSyoutube902 күн бұрын
Tank role issue is that not all tanks do the same job. One game you have a Rein, next game you have a Doom and are wondering… “where the fk is my tank….?”….. Doom, Ball, Queen, Hog…. These heroes are not tanks. They are DPS heroes with a fk load of HP….. ask yourself….. should a TANK be capable of flying across the map at light speed??? Of fucking course not! Doom plays the game like he’s Genji. How to fix? Separate the tank role into 2 roles. Doom, Queen, Hog, Ball etc should be “flex tanks” while Rein, Ram, Sig will be “main tanks”. This is much easier for casual players to understand. “Big guy with barrier is main tank”.

Dear friend, There’s something important to keep in mind: when you play a character long enough, you naturally start learning how to handle various matchups, including those that may initially seem unfavorable. The term "hard-countered" is used frequently on this subreddit and across Overwatch forums, but it's worth remembering that this isn’t a simple rock-paper-scissors game where one option always beats the other. Ultimately, it comes down to the player’s skill and judgment. If someone feels they're no longer contributing effectively, then a swap makes sense, but that decision should be left to the individual. Assuming another player should swap because you feel they’re being countered can sometimes create pressure that might not be beneficial to the team overall. Additionally, if you’re overly focused on someone else’s gameplay, it could mean you’re not focusing enough on your own. The most productive approach is to concentrate on your own playstyle and look for ways to maximize the value you bring to the team.

Re: 250 HP being a bigger Disadvantage than 200 health. If you have to pump more healing into a higher health pool, to keep the hero you are healing in the fight, that is going to demand more attention, more time, more resources, more everything to maintain. Consequently, if that hero steps out of the fight to be healed, it will take that much longer to get them back to full (or at minimum, back into a health state where they can reasonably interact again). If Ana needs to pump an extra shot into a 250 HP target to keep them in a fight, how many less shots is she dedicating to targeting another Ally, or even doing some DPS'ing herself? Personal Impact suddenly takes a backseat to required pocketing. Higher Health pools demand more resources from others on your team, just to keep playing the game. They make it so that either healing numbers need to be increased drastically to keep up (prompting higher damage + damage amp outputs, and round and round we go) or players taking breaks behind cover or not playing the game, take longer and longer compared to how easy it is for them to lose their health. Taking cover for 3-5s just to get back to full health, vs. losing all that health b/c the enemy is focusing you down from multiple sources in 1-2s, feels horrible. The rubberband isn't nearly as elastic on the getting healed, as it is on the taking damage. It also feels horrible vacillating between getting healed up to full by massive amounts of healing in 1-2s, vs. losing it all in 1-2s. There's no breathing room there. The rubberband is getting pulled and released way too fast to respond accurately. Season 9's changes (barring the projectile sizes which were genuinely good) promote all of this. S9 was the right philosophy but the exact wrong execution.
@Octovol4 күн бұрын
But you dont need to be full health to contest. You can still be 200hp, the same as before, because the damage numbers are the same. You might get hit more consistently because of the projectile/hitscan size changes but the damage numbers are the same. or at least they were at the time, not so much now lol If you take a 140-180dmg headshot and you duck for cover at 200hp it's also the threshold if you're at 250hp because another solid hit could take that remaining hp regardless of having that extra 50hp. But with 250hp those few stray shots you may have taken, before or after the big damage, make it so that the 140-180 doesn't effectively kill you outright before you can take cover, which is what the extra hp solves. It takes exactly the same amount of time for you to be healed back up to full because you took the same amount of damage. You can even still pop out of cover at 200hp to contest with a 250hp max and in fact you're about to start regenning health by yourself so you might not need those extra resources.
@SocialDesignFlaw4 күн бұрын
@@Octovol You don't need to be full health to contest, but the possibility of being Full Health in this game is significantly more uncommon, given the increased demand on Supports to provide even more healing in addition to their other responsibilities + Individual Impact, which wants players of all Roles to go looking for their PotG moments. That doesn't include being a healer at all times, in fact that's detrimental in 5v5. Nevermind that Tank Health Pools are so high now that it would take a single Support like Ana, how many shots just to get a Rein or Winston back into their Armour Health? Not even full health, just the Armour to improve their independence. The underlying point behind all this is that, the Health changes necessitated a much more mutable form of balance by the numbers; as you stated, the damage numbers have not remained the same. Nor have healing. All the numbers are now adjustable which means any adjustments in the Health state properly necessitated further adjustments to both Healing and Damage output as well. Season 9 designed a space in which the developers are going to be constantly changing small numbers everywhere-- effectively demanding even more Patches/Hotfixes than before as players discover the new frustrations each previous number shifts are creating. The projectile changes were genuinely, the only good decision made. Everything else just made more work for them on patching, more cognitive demand from an already tired playerbase, and less consistency in the gameplay overall that players or devs could latch onto and build an experience off of.

Great discussion, tbh. Glad that you both took time to listen when initially not agreeing on different topics and found decent middle ground in overall agreeing with that the problem was in each case. I feel like the talk about support popularity pre-juno missed the mark about the role being turned into a sub-dps role that was necessarily forced to have a lot more survivability meaning a lot fo DPS mains just swapped over to the role, especially with new heroes like Illari existing clearly exclusively for that audience for some god forsaken reason. I also disagree with the notion that taking away the increased hitbox sizes would be that much of a problem given we're still experiencing 'I wouldn't have hit that/been hit by that before S9' type situations *constantly*.
