OK... ...so, I litterally know nothing about whips. I bought a four plaits, (I guess that is what you call it.)at a horse supply place years back and it was absolute garbage... ...and that is where it wound up... ...in the garbage! I have been practicing to become ambidextrous in everything now for almost 13 years. I do everything that you can think of, from writting to shooting to throwing baseball, etc. So, I wanted to revist the whip idea as I jusy feel that it may help me with improving my left handed baseball throwing. You know, when you throw, your body should move whip like... ...for best efficientcy. So I just felt like maybe I could gain something from working with an actual whip. I found what I think may be a decent whip on Amazon, for $34.99. At least, I can say, it is miles above that first whip that I found at the horse supply place. It is a 8 plait and is 6 ft in length. It is advertized as an Indian Jones Style Bull Whip. It is tan bonded leather and it came with two additional poppers. It is sold by LB's Whip Store. Now the reason why I am posting this info is, that I only briefly watched two very short KZbin video's for help and I only worked with the whip for maybe 15 to 20 minutes and I got the damn thing to crack nicely both left handed and right handed a couple of times using what I learned was the cattlemans move. So, am I currently happy with my purchase, yes. For $34.99 I feel that I may have stumbed upon a decent entey level whip that may get me interested enough to learn more about them and to eventually purchase a good one. Because of todays little success, I will definitely go back out to practice. Hopefully my little post here will help somebody.

For the db test, you're correct in that an affordable meter won't be at all accurate with such a loud and short sound, however, they will allow you to accurately compare the SPL of one whip to another with a simple accommodation. All you need to do is increase the distance from the sound event to the meter, and the best way to do this is to get far enough away that your meter is reading within a more comfortable range, below 95db if you're using a simple/cheap meter. You won't be able to make exact measurements, only relative measurements, i.e. this whip is louder than the other. It's one of the ways I used to measure the effectiveness of my homemade silencers compared to commercial silencers, and the relative measurements of all the commercial silencers fell in line with their published ratings.

Hi, I am interested in buying a 6ft bullwhip for my son. However, he has very sensitive hearing. I am trying to work out how loud a whip of this type would be. I have watched one of your previous videos on this subject and they all seemed very loud! Any advice would really be appreciated, since there isn't much information availiable.
@whipworks4468
@whipworks4468 21 күн бұрын
Hello! All whips are going to be breaking the sound barrier, so think fireworks or .22 caliber gunshot loud. Hearing protection is helpful in this regard. A 6 footer will be less loud than an 8 or above footer, but from a hearing protection standpoint all whips are loud. Feel free to email me if you have any other questions: [email protected]

I am curious what kind of material you would use to load the paracord other than #9 shot. I don't have access to an ammunition like that where I am. Would fishing sinkers do the trick or would they make an odd bulbous shape?
@whipworks4468
@whipworks4468 Ай бұрын
There's all sorts of material you can use! Some people use the beaded strings that hang down from ceiling fans. BB's can work. Anything weighted that would fit in the sheath

Great breakdown! I got that Ardour Crafts whip for $50 for a 4 foot whip, and at that point I feel like it is a decent deal - all your same criticisms apply but now the price more closely matches the quality.

Also i'm using ruber band for preventing from unraveling and you can just slide it up and down as needed and leve it on all the time while you work or not work. :D Works better then clips for holding.

Just found your site(bull whip 1;Core)-you are a good teacher. You reminded of a discovery I found many years ago.In trying to slip heat shrink over a rough surface I rub a bit of dry bar soap or slightly dampened over the rough stuff(paracord!), even saliva. That is absorbed and eventually works its way out of the system-never had any slippage or chemical reaction. Thank you again for entertaining instructional videos. Dr. Bill

great presentation. i immediately made 4 of 69 weight, black, thread, then one of 207 weight red (3ply prior to initial twist resulted in slightly heavier popper. next will be 4 ply of 138 weight. this will add to my determination to set aside time to build a hybrid whip. could you please measure your finished poppers or somehow give me a range to stay within? do different size whips benefit from different size crackers? thanks again for the work giving us this great reference material. (i have studied several books on whipmaking, but video makes it that much easier.

I love this application. I wonder if it would be possible to build one like a PH whip and house a battery pack inside of the PVC handle. That would eliminate the wrist wrap. It would seem as if you could 6 or 8 AA batteries in the handle. Idk. Just a thought. I would love to have a couple to incorporate into my whip act.

Great video! I theorize that you might be so accustomed to your your own whip where it may be hard to adjust for each whip and going against your body's muscle memory. Technique might need to be adjusted for each whip. but im no expert, or anywhere near that.

@whipworks4468 You mentioned 3/8” shrink tubing for longer whips at the beginning of the video. Do you shrink that over 2” x 1/4” piece at the transition after wrapping with sinew? If not, would you be willing to share that information?
@whipworks4468
@whipworks4468 5 ай бұрын
Hey, great question! I put the 3/8 inch piece over the 1/4" piece, and THEN I wrap it in artificial sinew, so two layers of shrink tubing and then rug liner and then artificial sinew. I hope this helps!

I just built a simple Florida cracker. I like targeting more than the cracking. I did build a long heavy whip but again I just like messing with a simple thin whip. . I did use it in snow and as my paracord got wet had a little weight added. It is a really fun hobby
