I live in markyate been here 37 years never heard the story of the cricket ghosts I've been in that pub countless times. But I'll certainly keep an eye out now lol. I have a theory that she buried her treasure and Planted one of the now huge trees on top to mark the spot. Now I've just heard the ryme turns out i could of been right! We used to try hunt for it when we was kids and mess about in the grounds by the church. I'd love to get in their with a metal detector. The water company are dumping raw sewage into it now by flamstead sewage works it's infuriating!!! I've pollarded the willow trees at that redbourne section years ago. Nice little section.

I have only recently come across these videos. My grandad lived in castle hill road and worked in the quarries during the 60’s and 70’s. I asked my dad about some of these stories. Grandad having died some time ago. Apparently my grandad fell through the roof of one of the tunnels in his 14 tonne digger and it took several hours to get them both back out again. My dad told me the tunnels were only 100-300 yards long. That hole was filled with spoil from the chalk quarries and it’s unlikely there would be anything left of the tunnels now.

We have a lot of local history of ironworks in the area so it would make sense. We've really enjoyed watching your videos, really interesting stuff. All the best Fiona & Neil

Thanks for watching Chad, it was actually a chalk quarry used for producing lime for the cement industry. There is lots of limestone in the North of England but here in the south it is chalk for as far as the eye can see!

Hi mate . I sent you them maps. That part of the pits is the oldest part. That part you mentioned is the original lime works you can still make out the old cart tracks and banks (narrow Gage railway) leading up to the bee hive kilns (I got a hand drawn photo done before the war). If you need any info let me know. Ps I still got your torch that I found up there lol
@jim.m7518 күн бұрын
Ah it was you, cheers Sean that will help me in searching my emails! I know where the old narrow gauge tracks were, seems like the oldest part of the quarry as the trees there are much bigger. There is a huge hollow and lots of old brickwork at the end of those tracks, is that roughly where the beehive kilns were?
@seanives234518 күн бұрын
@jim.m75 if you email me I will reply with some photos. I got tons of info on sundon hills. Not a well know sit but you have harlington lime kilns (carner hill) I got loads of info on that. You can sill see the foundations it's was all destroyed in ww2 as it was a firing range.

Nice to see you out and about again, hope your back get's better soon. 🙂 It's a pity that the Quarry Squatters left a mess. If they left things tidy when they left, I don't think people would have much problem with them. But few of these idiots ever do, and it annoys the locals. So they end up having the Plod paying them a visit and moving them on. Oh well, stupid is as stupid does as the saying goes.

You’ve got quite a few of the ones I have.😁. I used to have a Safari which I sold in India back in the mid 90s, I was absolutely brassic. Always regretted it as it’s one of my favourites and you just never see them now, but happily, I discovered the German Army ones which are pretty much an exact copy, I also have two, one a Victorinox, and one, I forget the exact manufacturer, it’s an original though, not a reproduction, something like AML or similar. Never got any of the newer ones as I didn’t like the serrated blade. I have a Farmer which I got because of the thicker blade. My pride and joy is a Champion with the long file, never used- my father bought it and kept it in his caravan until his death in 2008. Also have a modern Champ, rather fancy a mini Alox Champ some day. I have thought about starting a knife channel my self, I don’t know exactly how many I have, it must be over 100 probably more. I have about 40 or so sheath knives of various types and way more folders ranging from ones that were my grandfather’s, and I think, his father’s, going back to the late 1800s, ones a beauty with horn slabs, a various blades, and it even still has a pair of tweezers although, sadly the tooth pick is missing, none of the blades are worn, it dates to about 1890s. Have some of my father’s and even still have my first ever knife, given me age 6, back in 1971!😁
