Good work, great video! I own a 2000 XVS 1100 and I have heard of this nut coming loose but didn't really know where it was. Now you have shown me, I'll get in there and locktite the thing together. I like the way you approached this, no fear, when you got frustrated, you walked away for a bit.

Just a FYI... just wired a 2023 T66 and the harness plug is under the drivers left side bottom trim panel just below drivers arm rest. You have to pull the seat on SJC models.

@@leadermon Good to know. I did a heater core on two of the units in this guy’s fleet, it was a real PITA without having a way to properly evacuate and recharge the AC system I think was my main problem causing the evaporator coil to be in my way. Fortunately he paid me fairly while I worked for him and was always willing to put whatever parts into the machines they needed. If it wasn’t season work I’d go back to work for him, one of the only employers I had who would listen to me when I’d explain what was wrong with a machine and what it needed. He never asked was I sure or why, just always said as long as it needs it and it’ll fix the problem he’d get the parts for it. He definitely knows how to run a proper business and is a super nice guy. Besides seasonal work not being able to support all my bills, he’s the best employer I’ve ever worked for by far for overall pay, attitude, and the way he treats his employees.

No the hole was drilled deep enough it was from not using the right tool on the end of it and twisting with a pliers instead of a 12 point socket or actual tool that holds the tap in it

Broken transmission output shaft? And here I thought Japanese bikes were immune to this kind of engineering insanity?? Now After seeing this: I'd rather change a belt drive belt on a Harley big twin...(remove the entire primary side). Or change out the twincam (spring loaded) cam chain tensioners every couple of years.... Oh and the rear wheel spinning slightly with engine running is not unusual. the oil forms a "visvcous coupling" (the oil will drag the clutch disks around while in the air).

Well I broke the shaft in my 2005 a couple of days ago. A heads up. They call for servicing the swing arm lube at every 20k to 25k. So I did and though I'd never have to drop the swing arm again.... WRONG. When I had the swing arm out for lube I drilled and tapped and installed 3 zerk fittings. And an additional one in the head tube. This should be standard instead of a $1500 maintenance cost at the shop. I drilled and tapped using the grease method suggested in this thread. Worked great.

An easy way to drill the hole centered and straight, is to use a simple jig made on a lathe or 3d printer with a small hole on one end for the drill bit and a larger hole at the other end to slip over the shaft end.

If I had access to either of those yes that definitely would’ve worked much better to be center and straight

Most shaft fractures of this type are caused by over-torquing the nut. Not saying owner did that, it could have been over-torqued at any point from setup to now.
@jaybilawchuk22252 жыл бұрын
Cannot believe after two decades of this bike, and not one video on you tube on how to check the nut, or how to tighten the nut to avoid having this happen. Is this even a common issue. Trying to find literally any info on how to even check this is like a needle in a haystack. Just bought the same bike, and zero online info on it.

I’ve seen plenty online. Pull the decorative cover off on the left side on the bottom. From there you’ll see a rubber boot, pull that back and you can see the shaft, nut, and ujoint
@jaybilawchuk22252 жыл бұрын
@@lawnboy81SMS yeah I’ve removed the speed sensor, and yes, I pulled the rubber boot back to see. It looks like it’s still solid on there. Tried fitting a wrench in there but it won’t tighten because there’s no room for it to turn even if it was loose. I don’t know how they get a chisel in there to “stake” it. Maybe it does? I just wish there was someone with experience that has done the check before. I’d like to try stake it yet, or my next idea is to Tak the nut to the threading with a spot weld. See what happens. lol. I’ll keep looking for any info but it’s impossible.

@@jaybilawchuk2225 To actually tighten the nut you need to remove the housing and rear swing arm/rear tire so you can remove the shaft. If you Jack it up and flex the shaft enough that might allow more room

So there is nothing we can do basically for preventative maintenance other than take the whole thing out? I’m not quite sure what we can watch for, unless I’m missing something.
@lawnboy81SMS2 жыл бұрын
Check that it’s tight. If it is, remove it and add loctite or drill a small hole through the shaft and stake the nut with a pin. Or replace it with a flanged locknut that looks like the existing one.

@@lawnboy81SMS ok, so to check it you mean to go thru the speed sensor hole with a camera? I get what you’re saying tho, but to dismantle all that, even if it’s still tight as it was from factory is a huge job, but I guess it’s a safety thing as well as a cost issue.
