When is a piece of work finished.

Most of my ceramic pieces are finished after 2 or 3 firings but occasionally I will refire a piece 6 or 7 times. Adding layers of engobe or bits of colour between the firings to enhance the surface composition and even grinding parts of the surface away.
I made this group of slab built ceramic vessels and thought they were finished but as they stood for a few weeks in my studio I had time to contemplate then and decided I needed to work into one to improve it. As I work with engobes I can add thin layers of engobe to the surface to enhance the composition of the marks on the piece and then refire it in the kiln. This process is a bit like working into a painting to resolve and finish it.
