In the studio 2021

This is a very quick insight into how I create the surface on one of my slab built ceramic vessel forms.
I build up layers of engobes, slips and underglaze and in this piece I have also incised lines into the soft clay. I also add additional shapes using a simple newspaper stencil. Typically the stencil adds a harder edged line that contrasts well with the softer edges of the brush marks.
Although it looks like the piece is grey in the making stage the image at the end shows that the colours in the fired piece change considerably in the kiln.
