In 1948, Lionel introduced the 2026 locomotive. It was just the old 1666 with a smoke unit added, and the detailed swiveling bell replaced be the fixed, one-piece bell on top of the bouler shell.

The 2026 isn't the same as a 1666. It was derived from the No. 1666 and altered by adding a feed water heater box on the pilot and extending the sand dome, and you're right about the addition of the smoke unit. My 2026 is one of my better "smokers".

A good way to clean out an e-unit is to give it a good spray out with contact cleaner that is available at any auto parts store. Just be sure to NOT apply power for a few minutes until the cleaner all evaporates because that stuff is flammable. No disassembly required, no flexing old wires with fragile insulation, no risk of damaging delicate finger contacts. Then disassembly is only necessary if the drum needs replacing, contact fingers are broken or bent or if the solenoid plunger still sticks.

Vaseline won't hurt these holder Lionel gears that are made of metal but do not use it or any petroleum based grease on newer plastic gears or parts. Petroleum will soften the plastic over time and cause gear teeth to strip off, making it necessary to replace the gears. This is especially a big problem with many old HO scale locomotives that were made 40 or 50 years ago. Lionel's O and O-27 trains built since about 1970 also often have plastic gears. In another unrelated hobby, this stripping out of plastic gears is also a big problem in sewing machines built in the last 50 or 60 years. To be safe, just use a plastic compatible hobby lubricant.

Hello Sir, This is my first time ever in watching videos about O-Gauge Trains especially postwar cars and Locomotives. I have several postwar steam Locomotives. I'm not capable and the fact that I have no knowledge about model trains and its inner working. Is it worth the price and trouble to upgrade something like replacing a headlight bulb from condensate bulb to LED bulbs on a Locomotive? Thank you for your time Sincerely Allan

I don't know anything about converting the standard light bulb to LED. I have never done it, so I don't know what involved to answer your question. There must be someone in a Lionel group on Facebook that has done it. I would ask around there.

On my 2350 there was a circlip that held the armature in place at the bottom of the armature shaft, so I had to remove the gear drive unit first to remove that circlip to get the armature out. Great video, Warren! It really helped me out.

Hey thanks for watching and I am glad to hear this video helped you out! Your 2350 SHOULD have those clips. This video is quite old and I since shot a new video showing how much this EP5 was missing. That video is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4qXpGl6adhoesksi=vqLZGSwGZ7VgvdfH The issue with most of the prewar and early postwar is they have been worked on,modified, half ass repaired, and simply neglected that many are missing a lot of parts or have the wrong ones.

Thats lousy connection between the roller pickup on the car and the track. Have a look at the rollers and see if they're dirty, or work out (groove down the middle. If that doesn't work, I'm at a loss because my Pullmans do the same thing and the rollers are perfectly fine.

you can put in a dallee 400 reverse unit in it the red and brown go to the brushes the yellow and orange go to the coils but you have to take off the coil attached to the motor frame with shrink tubing put a new wire for third rail pickup attach the wires from the smoke unit and light to that make the third rail wire to the blue wire the take the black wire to the screw that holds the more and you should be good to go it will run smoother and smokes great PS you might have to switch the yellow and orange to make sure it always go forward first

Maybe someone here can help. I just cleaned and fixed my dad's 1950's Lionel postwar steam engine. It runs great now especially since I cleaned the armature and replaced the carbon brushes. But there's lot of sparks sporadically off and on. Not sure if it's the engine or tracks. The tracks are just as old as they came with the engine and train when my dad got them brand new back in the 50's. so maybe clean the tracks more? Sorry. I'm not an electrical expert. Also there's a kind of a loud hum when running the engine. So I'm not sure if that's normal or not.
@warrenmuzakpostwarguy4331
@warrenmuzakpostwarguy4331 22 күн бұрын
Are the sparks coming from wheels contacting with the track? If so that's dirt and debris on the track or the locos wheels. Use a scouring pad or very fine grit sand paper to remove rust and dirt from the top of the rails. The top of the tracks should be silver. DO NOT USE STEEL WOOL or SOS pads. They will leave steel fibers behind that will short out the system.

The E-unit is an ingenious single pole quadruple throw switch. The plunger is raised by current passing through the solenoid coil around it. The solenoid's core is an electromagnet. When the plunger is raised by the electromagnet it advances the drum and changes the contacts. The contracts are arranged to cut off and then reverse the flow of electricity, producing forward, neutral, then reverse...... When the transformer switch is pushed, or turned, the electricity is shut off and the plunger descends by gravity. Thank you for the demonstration video. Ther is an option to replace the E-Unit mechanical switch with a circuit board and bypass the unit for unidirectional operation. The circuit board runs around $80 dollars and our local shop, the last remaining, charges an additional $60 to clean and replace using either option.

I'm late to the party here Warren but that was a great tutorial! It seems many of these smoke unit rebuild kits don't come with instructions, the one's I have didn't. I figured it out myself but a "how to" video would have been a great help! And right, I prefer to keep pellet-type smoke units "as is" and not convert them to liquid types. I find the pellet types work just fine with liquid smoke fluid as long as you don't "drown" them. And even then they'll be fine once the excess "cooks' off.

I switched out the shoe collector plate on my 1666 to a spring loaded roller type plate. It was easy once I found the new roller plate from someone selling them on eBay. It's not necessary to remove the paper collector plate to replace shoes. Just reach up under frame and push up the copper collector with a flate blade and the shoe will come out. I made a tool from an old table knife to do that but a small flat blade screw driver will work. Yes, your engine copper collector was bent out of shape on the one end. It would require straightening and I would remove it to do that. You can get replacement shoe plates and shoes too. I run my postwar trains on old tube track because they run best on it and it works with Magnetraction. Fastrack is not very good material for Magnetraction. Fastrack is apparently a type of steel that is not very magnetic. Good video.

For engines, do gears get greased or oiled?
@warrenmuzakpostwarguy4331
@warrenmuzakpostwarguy4331 Ай бұрын
Hey thanks for watching. The common practice is to use grease for WORM gears like you would find on the motors of larger Berkshire Lionels (671, 681, 2020, 736, 726) and the diesels. Oil the gears of the other steam models. This is because the Berkshires and Diesels gears aren't readily accessible so the grease will last longer between maintenance. The gears that are more exposed can be lubricated with oil since they are accessible you can apply lubricant more frequently. That said, I personally GREASE all my gears because I don't get a chance to run all my locos as frequently so they sit dormant for longer periods (approx. 4-6 months in some cases). I find the grease holds up and and keeps everything free and moving. In short, if you are running the locos frequently and have access to the gears, oil is perfectly fine. Make sure they don't run dry. And make sure you oil the armature bearing and shaft too.

Went back and re-warched this video. I have a 2056 and 675 that ( no matter what I do) get the noise back shortly after cleaning and lubing. So this answered my question about the brush plate / cover possibly being worn. I'll have to inspect my engines to see if that's the case. I already tried the gear plate covers - replacements, soaking in oil, etc., and doesn't seem to do the trick. In your opinion, if neither work, is there a possibility that the armature is worn too much, where the gear plate and brush plate no longer hold it well enough? I know that's a big PIA job, so hoping not... On a side not, I picked up some Super Lube Synthetic grease, and it's fantastic for lubing!
@warrenmuzakpostwarguy4331
@warrenmuzakpostwarguy4331 Ай бұрын
If you've tried all that and nothing is working I would replace the brush plate. The wear may not be as obvious to the eyes. Especially if your eyes are 50+ yrs like mine! If theres slack it would be enough to cause problems and its only going to get worse if you don't address it. Get the proper brush plate for that motor, some seem like they can be swapped but from personal experience, they can't. Let me know how it goes!

The Lionel 244 has the same motor setup as many other low end scout type locomotives. If you are getting a light with non motion forward or back that tells me immediately that the 2 direction eunit (lever sticking out of the top) is faulty. It could just be dirty or its broken. The 244 is a low end Lionel, the 2 position eunits in these are not very reliable as they have have a plastic piece which over time warps and prevents a proper electrical contact which completes a circuit, allowing the loco to move. See this video for a similar problem I had with an identical motor setup in this Lionel 247. Heres the link. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZS3aKF8h8Zmabs
