I fish St. Clair fairly regularly, and I typically run a bit longer leader out there, for mainly 2 reasons. A longer leader often keeps the bait above some of the shorter weeds, and I believe that smallies commonly feed up on schools of bait.

Something happened with the dropshot bite. Other competitors I talked to after the tournament agreed that the dropshot lost effectiveness from practice and through the event. Why? Not sure.

It's funny when I learned to Carolina Rig when I lived in Georgia and fished West Point Lake, then I moved to North Carolina and it had not caught on much. I did learn the Carolina rig was nothing more than a Fluke or Flounder rig they used on the coast of North Carolina and was carried over to Bass fishing. And now the Drop Shot took over and the Drop Shot Is an upside down rigged Carolina Rig...

Its like when I started Carolina Rigging we used Ron Savage pre rigged worms back in the late 80's. Later on I took that leader length and basically used a 30" leader and if I had grass I go to a 40" leader to get the bait to float on top of the weeds. At Lake St. Clair I had a 16" and a 24" leader on my drop shot and both my pros were tossing long leaders like 24" and longer...My fish all came on 24" leaders...

The reason being is I can suspend it over top of the bass or if bass are relating to the very bottom I lay down my flatworm on the bottom and never lift my rod tip. Goby never leave the bottom more then inch or 3. It is a must to leave rod tip just above water level when fish are bottom related. Got my asz waxed by not doing this. Perceptive of you. Perhaps the reason I don't care to watch tournament videos is the pros tend to hide what they're using. In addition, they don't talk water depth, water clarity, water temperature, angle of the sun, and so forth. All I get to see is them hauling in fish. I don't need that. I want information. I need help. I need to know what they're thinking.

I always use 2’ drop leaders. And I fish Green Bay plenty. When you cast a drop shot your bait will be much less up than your leader length because of the angle of your line. And shiners are preferred as a higher calorie prey. Big ones know that…but green pumpkin still gets eaten best. Or black. Ever wacky rig on a drop shot?

I have no experience with northern lakes or smallmouth I have heard them talk about 2 ft leaders for years in the clear waters. Here in Texas my idea length is 8-10 in. Question I have is were they casting to/staying off the fish or dropping to them and if so what would be an average depth? It would make a lot of sense to use a longer weight to hook length if you were staying off the fish considering the angle of your line at distance effects how high your bait is off the bottom.
@moynaghbassfishes38185 күн бұрын
I'm pretty sure they are casting to them.
@academicmailbox77986 күн бұрын
At some stage in all of this, you are no longer fishing a drop shot rig, but rather you are fishing with a version of a Carolina rig.
@academicmailbox77986 күн бұрын
The only difference being, as Frank Scalish noted lately, guys who try to whack fish on a Carolina rigging are only wasting time and effort (the large strike serves only to lift the large Carolina rig's egg sinker off of the bottom and drop it back down again). So with a drop shot rigging with a longer leader, what you realistically are doing is fishing a Carolina rig. Where the plastic bait or lure on the Carolina rig has been made buoyant enough, so that the Carolina rig's leader enables the bait to float upwards two feet from the bottom.
@academicmailbox77986 күн бұрын
What would happen for example if one was to Carolina rig a balsa crank bait lure ? Well my hunch, and I've really only listened to Matt Stefan talk about it, is you're crank bait spends a lot of time trying to rise back towards the surface (even if the surface happened to be 15 or 20 feet above the bottom). And what you've got now is something a lot like a drop shot system with a long leader.
@academicmailbox77986 күн бұрын
In moving water fishing we call this a split shot rig. Where the split shot is crimped on the end of a long leader, and we insert dropper hooks and baits at various points higher up on the leader system. So that these insect imitations present to the fish who is downstream of the angler, already positioned at various levels in the water (effectively different heights away from the bottom). Of course, what anglers in that trout method discover, is at times the fish change preference for the height off the bottom they are prepared to feed at. They call it 'high stick' method too, because anglers raise their rods higher up, so as to straighten the line and make it vertical.
@academicmailbox77986 күн бұрын
The reason for that is, if you do not 'high stick' (if the leader simply sags into an arc shape that goes from the angler across the river, the leader catches more water pressure, and the baits move in an unrealistic way below). Plus, as the line sags into that arc across the water, the baits all end up at the same depth (one loses benefit of showing fish a choice of baits at a choice of depths). Hence the need to hold the stick higher, maintain a vertical line down into the water, and display lures at a choice of depths, in as slow and realistic way underneath the water as possible.
@academicmailbox77986 күн бұрын
Because chances are, if all that works the fish might move itself sideways from it's location to feed on your artificial baits, if their presentation can be controlled and slowed down enough. So casting angles (upstream, across and downstream), and angle of the line itself in relation to the flat river bottom are all things we can control in this modified form of the drop shot.

A jig/minnow is more versatile, especially when you're trying to find the correct depth, action, etc. Once you figure that out, you can go to the drop shot and hover it where they want it. The top 10 finishers were all live-scoping which is no surprise. Joe Bauer Fishing KZbin channel had a breakdown of the recent Bassmaster Open. I believe he's a guide on Lake St. Clair. It's worth a watch. My experience with walleye is that they rarely go down to get a bait so if you're too deep, it's almost impossible to catch the more active fish. Just an amateur's 2 cents.

Having every bass count is strategically more challenging and is simply more demanding of each angler. Having competed many times now on the Champions Tour, their format has made me a much better tournament angler even in best 5 events. It would be nice if there was a sub-prize for the best 5, like there is for big bass. Champions Tour does have a sub-prize for the best three.
