I'm all for dumping the can. If nothing else, just to see what it looks like deeper inside. I suspect it will be very moist. It will be interesting to see.

I think it will be very moist too. Maybe if I get time this week I will....

In the very beginning, when you first reached into the bin, I thought to myself.. what kind of fancy gloves does she have on that have moving polkadots on them? Took me a moment to realize what it was that I was actually seeing - but for a moment it was kinda trippy.. haha!

Wow the really can stand the heat as well as cold. Here in central Florida we have had heat index in triple digits but my worms are doing well. Thanks for the update looking good. 😀😀😀

Im so glad you do these experiments though, b/c I would be so scrlared to put whole napkins in there like that w/out weeting them down a ton! Im always scared im going to look in my bin and have a bunch of dead dried up worms that got stuck to them... lol. But your videos help me to go out of my comfort zone a little!

Candace Elder worms are so resilient! Don’t overthink it. Remember, I put a TON of wet food right on top so those napkins won’t be dry for long.

That bin looks awesome. Can't believe how well they worked that material over. How are you going to harvest it? Looks like it is due.
@TheCrazyWormLady5 жыл бұрын
It's beyond due... I think I am going to heavily top feed for a week or 2, take off the top few inches with worms and dump the rest... allow some worms to make it out to the garden. The rest will be added back in. I am going to start a 2nd outdoor can as well and run it a little different. Could be fun...

Thx. Can you just add vermicast and worms directly to garden?

You always read my mind and feature what I want to see. I remembered all the leaves but not much else. When the weather is 100 degrees out, do you remember the temperature reading on the inside of the bin?
@TheCrazyWormLady5 жыл бұрын
Richelle McCowan got as high as 98 in the bin. I think the large capacity protected it from cooking the worms. They seemed minimally if at all bothered. It was fantastic.

Great videos Emily.. I'm trying to do an outdoor worm farm, but in foam boxes. I have them in the sun during the day and under roof during the night. But I just can't get the heat up in the bins ..I'm having 32 - 64 °F temperatures . Thanks!

Over the winter my bin literally had chunks of ice in it and my worms still survived. Alfalfa meal helped some. Large feedings. Run it a bit drier than normal. Lots of leaves for insulation. It can definitely be done. My worms survived -5 degree temps and sustained temps in the teens for 2 weeks.

It always looks like your worm castings are very brown. Almost like coco coir or peat moss. Is it just my computer screen or Re they really that color? I use a lot of coco coir or peat moss but once they work through it My bins/ castings are really black. Im just winderi g if maybe my castings are just too wet or if yours are actually black

Do you cover your outdoor bin? If not, how do you avoid flys laying eggs in your bins?
@TheCrazyWormLady5 жыл бұрын
Yes! I have holes drilled in the sides but this is a garbage can and the lid is kept on at all times. Plenty of flies and bugs call this bin home as well but they all seem to live happily together.
@PlantObsessed5 жыл бұрын
Wow those guys went nuts out there. Kind of makes me want to do an out door bin. Any issues with racoon's?
@TheCrazyWormLady5 жыл бұрын
We literally have just about every critter around us. We live on a reservoir in the country. We have black bear, coyotes, racoons, possums, squirrels, fox, deer, voles, ground-hogs, etc... I haven't had a single issue with any of them!

Good job thanks Emily. Still getting my act together on a Mac book pro. And I know little about audio mixing with a voice over. But and upload with my I phone 6. Great to see the composting process and the worms looking so good Emily! I've just recently started another cold composting bin (bottomless but it has a lid) and will throw some of my red wrigglers from my indoor bins in it, to speed up the process. Do you add any soil to your compost bin, like sand? Also, apart from fruit fly which one would expect having a bin outside, have you had any major breakouts of pot worms, springtails, or mites like you sometimes do in your indoor bins? Curious to find out. Thanks for all your great content, really appreciate you sharing so much. Diane x.
@TheCrazyWormLady5 жыл бұрын
I haven't had many pests beyond flies and springtails. Crazy, right? I wonder if mother nature creates a better environment then a house for a balance of pests which keep one another in check? I don't add anything from the outside to my indoor bins.
