What is the maximum temperature your system can reach? Particularly, what type of column is in use? It might be fun the try some different cooking oils and try making Fame's. Since methyl derivitization is typically required for this type of analysis. Great video as always though!

This is a 100m general purpose Restek column I found new on eBay ! I can take it to 350c but I never went higher than 280. I read a studie about identifying cooking oil in French fries from different fast food restaurants by looking at the Carbon 13 ratio, I thought about doing something similar but didn't really have time .. maybe a future revisit ! Hey thank you so much for the idea and for watching!

Thanks man! I was just debating this very issue with my wife! Should I explain it more or not? Should I become a run of the mill channel with high traffic? Or keep up the same content? I think there is other channels out there just as involved if not more involved than I am with dry AF delivery and they still get a lot more traffic... To be honest, I really don't care, I would do this with or without KZbin, I do however enjoy feedback from viewers ... Thanks for your comment and thank you for watching!!!

Ah, you reminded me of this time we were looking at the product of a synthesis of a modified peptide in which bromine was supposed to be the leaving group for part of the modification reaction. It failed to leave.... But I was looking at the spectrum befuddled by this mass that was not the one we expected and my colleague, who is much smarter than me, walked over, glanced at the screen, and said "oh, that's bromine." She didn't even know the reaction involved bromine, but while I do, technically, know about the two isotopes, she was a whole lot quicker than me!

Very cool stuff you're doing! One note about the metabolism of alcohol is that unlike many other metabolic processes EtOH generally follows zero order kinetics, not first order kinetics. Since the enzyme is quickly saturated the amount metabolized per unit time remains constant, it doesn't have a half life and is better approximated by a straight line than an exponential decay (until the concentration is quite low).
@Neptunium
@Neptunium 3 күн бұрын

Very informative! I have watched this multiple times already. Any chance that you would do some mentoring or advising? I am interested in plant sap analysis (xylem and phloem sap) as a method of monitoring the nutrients available to the plant. Would GC-MS be appropriate for that task, or is one of the other methods (for example ICP-MS etc.) better? I am thinking of the possibility of a general purpose machine that could also do soil and water pollution , food toxins and soil nutrient analysis. I am also wondering, what are the on going costs associated with maintaining and operating a GC-MS (for example nitrogen gas, solvents and column replacement etc)?
@Neptunium
@Neptunium 9 күн бұрын
Well if you are looking for xylene, toluene and other industrial solvent than yes the GC-MS works great! Nutrient like organic acid and vitamins can work but probably better on LC l-MS. Minerals are exclusively analyzed on ICO-MS or OES you won't see any organic on ICP. As for the consumables, I have a tank of helium for the GC-MS it was new when I started about 3 months ago and still has 1500Lbs (3/4 full) Unfortunately there is no machine that can analyze for everything! I know that would be awesome right! LC and GC-MS are the closest you going to get ! Thanks for your comment and thank you for watching!

So cool! GC-MS is a huge thing for analytical chemistry. I still remember a lab I worked in had an ancient device with some very very basic UI. If i remember correctly it could only print out on dot matrix paper. But it was invaluable as a quick and dirty pre-lab analysis. It spared many a tired students and PhDs long hours and runs to the lab for botched experiments. We also tried to repair the autosampler, but could not get it running. It was named Frankie 😂 A total Frankenstein. I bet it still runs like a charm
