I used 2 pieces of tempered steel wire straddling 2 stones, put the mess tin on top and burned the haxamine from below. No need for the folding stove if you set it up right. Try that with the alcohol gel - it pishes all over the place if not confined, and leaves a black charred residue when finished.

Is this something else that we can thank the r..l..gion of "p34ce" for? Who gas been making explosives with this? How bloody annoying all these bans are!
@pmac5934Ай бұрын
The reason hexamine ( hexamethylhenetetremine ) is banned as an easily obtained solid fuel is mainly because it is very useful as a base compound for plastic explosives and might very well be used as such by the very bad actors who hate our way of life . Nobody is stopping you from camping - except , perhaps intolerant owners of the land . Nobody is denying it was useful as solid fuel for ordinary soldiers in previous conflicts but it didn't win any wars and there are other fuels available now . By the way , I had a conversation with ex - SRC service not too long ago who mentioned practising using hex blocks alongside other materials to make things go bang . The fumes are also toxic but then again nobody refers to fresh air as 'fumes' , do they ? Yes , it is useful ( in many applications not just as a heat source ) but the reason it is banned for easy purchase is to help to prevent terrorists from attacking us , by adding a step to the processes necessary for a non-chemist without a proper lab from manufacturing explosives that might endanger innocent members of the public. If you have a problem with that I suggest you learn all the other many ways of eating whilst sleeping open

lol.. I use a butane gas can with an attachable electronic ignition blow torch.. (wallmart) step 1.. fill tin cup with water.. step 2.. point flame at water until boiled.. step 3.. add coffee sugar milk as desired.. also makes a very good fire starer when you just cant be bothered using a ferro rod lol..
@georgeborrow4001Ай бұрын
That's actually quite a good idea especially if you're just stopping for a brew. And as you say it also doubles up as a fire starter. Thanks for watching.

Trangia or a starlite is my go to...... Alcohol is easier and more readily available everywhere at the drop of a hat.....the others you have to hunt for.....my alcohol burners are always in my pack for just that reason ,also it gets cold here in the winter and these stoves are the most faithful to get you thru on a bad below zero (F*) kinda day !!

@HootOwl513Ай бұрын
@@georgeborrow4001 Oh, OK. I thought hexamine covered the lot of burnable heat tabs. I used Trioxane in the US military in the '70s. Stuff was noxious. Today, I prefer alcohol. I have two geniune Trangias, An Esbit burner that's a Chinese knock off of a Trangia, a very cheap Chinese knock off of that, and two Swedish military burners. Denatured Alcohol has gone up in price. I paid over $20 and change, for one US gallon at Home Depot. If fact, Coleman white gas is 4 or 5 bucks less. I also have a Svea 123, 123R, an Optimus 8R and a 99 if I want to get serious.

I have the Trangia, Esbit Folder and a heap of home-made Alcohol-based Liquid and Gel Fuel Burners. Agree, Meths is the cheapest. Here in Switzerland we get 'Brennsprit' (Burn Spirits), liquid alcohol fuel which is under £3 a litre. That 'Dragon Gel' is way overpriced. We use 'Sicherheitsbrennpaste' (Safety Burn Paste) which goes at under £5 for an 850g bottle and is extremely clean-burning. I do not use Solid Fuel (Esbit) Tablets in my Esbit Folding Stoves, although I do keep box of each stored in both for 'just in case'. The Tablets are only available at Outdoor Stores, while the Alcohol Liquid and Gel Fuels can be had at my local Supermarket and are much cheaper. My favourite? Depends .. on the day and the mood 😊.
@clivedunning4317Ай бұрын
Hello , saw that you are in Switzerland. Can you still get "META" fuel tablets there ? They used to be very popular in the UK in the 1970s, but seemed to vanish overnight. They were used with a Meta cup/stove combination. TIA
@georgeborrow4001Ай бұрын
Yes I agree the fire dragon fuel is overpriced and I wouldn't be surprised if we see a big drop in price soon . It's always handy to have a few solid fuel tablets in your pack just in case. Thanks for watching.

@thomasmusso1147Ай бұрын
@@clivedunning4317 No, I have not seen them here .. only the Esbit brand tablets, and then only in Outdoor Stores such as Decathlon and Transa. Anyway, as I mentioned elsewhere, the Liquid and Gel Alcohol Fuels are cheaper and more readily available than the solid fuel tabs .. although I do keep a pack of Tablets stored sealed, in each of my Esbit Folders for 'just in case' and a spare pack for each at home. I haven't used an Esbit Solid Fuel Tab in more than 30 years.

Bought my Trangia, was I was 14 and in the Scouts - 47 years later I'm still using it. Why anyone would consider anything else, I have no idea. Also the Trangia works much better when the flame is closer to the pan.

Love the trangia. So cheap and you can get fuel anywhere. Easier to put out than the tablets. I have the hexi stove as well and use tablets from coghlans which look pretty much same as the godora ones. Still can bet the gas for quick brew though.

Out on bike tours over the last 50 year I have been caught in a total of 2 storms where I needed to set up a quick emergency shelter. Once in a 1 C with rain and high wind and the other high wind a ice cold down pour. None of the shelters shown in this video would have protected me or would have blown away. My go to emergency shelter is to pull out my 17 oz. Blizzard bag that holds alpaca socks, poly long bottoms, light wool long sleeve Tee shirt and a buff. My body is covered from my toes to the top of my head and my hands pulled into the sleeves My poncho with the sides snapped together with my head inside and the hood closed tight. I sit down against a wall or tree with my knees pulled up against my chest. My feet holding the front of the poncho to the ground. Drink some powdered 28% butter fat powdered milk from my water bottle and enjoy a fig bar or two and try to relax and enjoy mother nature. Not very comfortable, but safe and take a short nap.
